I have just completed a 3 day lead welding course and use this video as a reminder of good practise.

I spent many weeks at college trying to leadburn (weld) and I only wish I had achieved that kind of result. It is a difficult thing to master. You either have it or you don't. The instructor told me to whistle because it relaxes you. I got the whistling down to a fine art but not the welding.

Practice makes perfect,,,, lots of it !!! I used to do I bit but a mate of mine was shit hot at it and that's all he did , he came from a roofing background witch was handy and he knew exactly what I wanted. I could send him while I went fishing or shooting job done.

I would so like to use lead on my garage roof as an alternative to an ugly asphalt one.
If I can mange to do it myself it would only be a material cost and therefore no more expensive. These videos are extremely helpful and interesting. It isn't rocket science but getting something right the first time is testing....

A steady hand, clean lead and the right flame is what's needed to achieve a nice consistent weld, bossing is something you can not rush it takes alot of skill to be able to boss corners up,i have seen alot try on site thinking they could do it easy and end up making a fool out of them selves lol the best part of the job is all that scrap lead from old buildings, churches ect,,a nice bonus at the end of the week on top of your wages😉👌

There is no substitution for good leadwork. If your looking for a long term solution to flashings or guttering lead is recommended. It is however not a DIY skill and skilled lead workers make the difference.

new lead will oxidise very easily which makes the weld slip cleaning will assist the weld to grip.roofer leadworker with 30 years exp

An oxide layer forms quickly on most base and alloyed metals soon after solidifying or rolling/shaping. The metals it doesn't form on immediately are not going to be a viable roofing solution due to rarity and cost.
In soldering (say, copper) you would usually use a flux separately or as a solder core (such as rosin-core solder).
