- Guide to scrambling Far Easedale Gill west of Grasmere in the Lake District. Summary verdict: great set of final grade 1 / 1.5 waterfalls with a few warm-up falls earlier, all set in dramatic scenery
• Route in: park at Lancrigg Hotel west of Grasmere and take the main path that runs along the valley bottom of Far Easedale. (Alternatively, there are other car parks further in to Grasmere which is also served by regular buses.)
• Start point: the gill is only accessible after a water gate at OS ref NY 32041 09072, north-east of Ecton Crag but the first set of cascades just past the gate is quite limited: you need to walk to the OS-marked sheepfold for the first waterfall
• Grading: there are several grade 1 and grade 1.5 waterfalls with a particularly good run of falls and cascades just before and along a right-hand split that ascends up to Moor Moss, around NY 30112 09936. There’s also a large grade 2.5/3 waterfall not readily climbable without a rope.
• Notes: the left-hand split at this point has only one short waterfall and is not worth following
• End point: above the final waterfall on Moor Moss around NY 30029 10064
• Route out: walk across / west to meet the main path down the valley and follow that
• Time: around 30 mins from CP to water gate but 50 mins to the sheepfold; then 100 mins up Far Easedale Gill; then c.80 mins to walk back
• Combine with: gill/gully scrambles up to Broadstone Head; Sourmilk Gill
• Gear: drybag, wetsuit, bouyancy vest; climbing helmet not needed
• Verdict: the final set of cascades and falls are an exciting, stimulating challenge; those earlier in the gill are fine though more of a warm-up to the main act but all of them are in beautiful landscape
• Category: Standard scramble
• Score: 7/10
