Wilderness Gully East Scramble
A guide to scrambling Wilderness Gully East near Dove Stone Reservoir in the north-west Peak District. Summary verdict: an excellent challenge that pushes the boundaries for the grade 1 scrambler
• Route in: park at Dove Stone Reservoir Car Park. Walk past the south side of the reservoir and then up Chew Road towards Chew Reservoir until you reach roughly OS ref SE 02791 01887 - then look for a vague path running down to Chew Brook heading up the brook. If you can’t find that, take the slightly-clearer path towards the footbridge and then head up the brook.
• Start point: make your way up the south side of Chew Brook to the entrance to Wilderness Gully East at SE 02902 01669
• Notes: there are several Wilderness Gullies; all of the others are easier grade 1 scrambles
• Grading: alongside plenty of grade 1 terrain there are at least four grade 2 pitches beside (often-insubstantial) waterfalls
• End point: where you meet the path along the tops at SE 02911 01533, after c.300 ft of ascent
• Route out: I did once meet someone exiting down the gully but, mad men aside, the easiest route is heading east along the top path until just before Chew Reservoir when you can cut down and across Chew Brook to Chew Road and walk back down. Alternatively, you go west along the top path and take the rough route down Chew Green that then follows along the west bank of Chew Brook
• Map link: www.alltrails.com/explore/map/map-january-27-2025-15e122e
• Time: about an hour from CP to start point; around half an hour to scramble up the gully; about an hour to walk back
• Combine with: Charnel Clough, Chew Brook, other Wilderness Gullies
• Gear: unless it’s been raining hard, this is a dry scramble though you’ll likely get wet feet on the walk in beside Chew Brook
• Verdict: a fine challenge for the grade 1 scrambler that’s tricky to negotiate but thoroughly satisfying when completed
• Category: Top-rated
• Score: 8/10

    Pleased to have found this channel. Did this one twice last year and really enjoyed the scramble, but not the route finding at the top, once the scramble is complete. Still, well worth a visit. One thing to add - I was a bit nervous about the grade 2 ratings but they feel quite manageable because they are short. Also, I think it felt confident that I could return back down if the worst happened. I did it on a dry summers day - respect the winter ascents you're doing!

    • @Grade1Scrambler
      @Grade1Scrambler หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you! Agree on the route out - hence why I've included in the video: I was lucky to first go with someone who pointed out the direct route down by the fence. I've done it a few times now in a variety of seasons plus as a night scramble last week and haven't actually found much difference in terms of challenge (and you're right that shortness helps along with being an enclosed not exposed route), though of course it's a bit miserable when it's raining. Thoroughly recommend as a night scramble on dry, windless night - it was a highlight of my year

    We loved this scramble. Free car park and nice compact route. We did it in the evening sunshine. I'd certainly question the grading in the book especially knowing Snowdonia scrambles but if it's claiming it's a grade 2 then I'll take it! 😁

    One of my very first scrambles a decade or so ago. I distinctly remember the “ escape “ footpath ( right bank looking upstream ) adjacent to the large slippery waterfall being particularly sketchy. I also remember taking something of a chimney exit to the left out of the route of the main scramble near the top though my memory is a little hazy on exactly where that would of been.

    • @Grade1Scrambler
      @Grade1Scrambler 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I suspect that right bank footpath is even worse now: as I say in the video, climbing the waterfall seemed a better option! And if you took the chimney option, you're braver then me - though probably more fun that the rather dull grade 1 exit I took

    • @kurt3306
      @kurt3306 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If my memory is serving me correctly i recall two lines up that outcrop. I picked the essier of the two. It does look a bit dramatic from below but i remember there being no real feeling of exposure once in there ( and i am rather exposure averse )and good blocky holds for hands and feet. Quite an interesting finish to the main clough. The only real thing holding me back from going ,especially with all the rain at the moment , is that afforementioned path up there….

      The ones above Chew Brook - I've done two of the grade 1 gullies which is nos. 5 and 8 (if you have the Scrambles in the Dark Peak book) plus an un-numbered one to the west of gully 5. They are straightforward Grade 1 and easy enough to do in a couple of hours; going down either via Chew Reservoir to the east or Chew Green to the west - though the thistles are a pain in summer! Charnel also a nice Grade 1 with blocks and boulders (and no thistles)

      1.5mm sticks in my head though I can't find that anywhere online - but that looks about right: 1.5/2mm-ish. I bought them one size bigger than my shoe size and that means I can easily wear 3mm neoprene socks inside - I was out in freezing conditions with ice on the water and able to stay out for at least three hours in and out of the water (though my feet were cold by the end). Merrell boots are utter garbage. I got a pair they replaced UNDER WARRANTY because the first pair had broken off half the lugs on the sole. THe replacement boots fell apart about two months after I placed them in service. I walk on GRASS. GRASS. County gravel roads. Once or twice a day. And they already fell apart. I contacted Merrell again and they refused to do anything about it. They were Moab's. They were $130.00 for the pair. That's $130.00 down the TOILET. I've been wearing them with the sole half fallen off cause they're useable during DRY, NON-DEWY, weather. But they have also developed a CHUNK on the outside of the inner sole, on the opposite side of my foot from the inner arch, that makes my outer foot ride up, and it really hurts. ALSO, there's no way to waterproof them. If you walk in twenty feet of dewy grass, your feet will be wet for the rest of the day. I contacted Merrell to ask what they used or sold to waterproof them. THey DID NOT. I asked them what they'd recommend to waterproof them. THEY DID NOT. They leak like sieves. Plus with the broken lugs on the bottom, any moisture that can, will get in through the outer soles. THey are JUNK. DO NOT BUY MERRELL BOOTS. \\ A $5 pair of Columbias I got at the thrift store lasted FIVE YEARS until I literally wore everything off the bottom sole. THey're still solid boots, and I use em for wading while trout fishing.
