My teen daughter needed something dressy to wear for a band concert. She raised my closet, with my permission. She found a shirt that I've had for probably 20-25 years. It looks like a white button down shirt under a black sweater, but it's really just one shirt. She loved it and claimed it for herself.
A few days before that, she was wearing ripped jeans, a Nirvana shirt, and had headphones on. I told her she looked like a 90s grunge band groupie.

As a Gen Xer who works alongside Xennials, this hits HARD! I've had the experience of seeing people walking in with newly printed t-shirts of "old bands, like my mom likes them.." and then told them I saw them LIVE IN CONCERT!!! and they're like "WHOOAAAA.....".
Same thing happened a while back, guy came in wearing a reprint of a t-shirt advertising WRESTLEMANIA VI... He was showing me and I just said "Yeah, April 1, 1990 SkyDome Toronto Canada. Ultimate Warrior Beat Hulk Hogan for the title....I WAS THERE!!" And he acted like he wanted to sit me down and hear the stories of "The Olden Days"
Speaking of finding things in the closet, I was doing a DEEP clean of the closest in my spare room when I found a pair of Jean shorts that I had tossed in there because I needed a hole patched in the pocket (remember when keys were pointy?) They were early '90 style - Painted and embroidered with DRAGONS and COOL SYMBOLS! i got the pocket patched up and wore them out ONCE and got stopped like 5 times about where I got them!

80's girl here, Doc Martins!! Suddenly I am seeing them everywhere.😊 Back then the only way to get the was to order them from England! Their catalogue consisted of a BW pamphlet with drawings and 3 color choices. (you didn't actually see the color). Then you would place your order in the mail with a money order and wait weeks to get them. All the while hoping to God it wasn't a scam because you really didn't know for sure the first time you ordered them. 😋 I saw my niece wearing a Guns and Roses tee and I was so psyched! I was like hey you like Guns and Roses! And I was going on about my favorite songs. Then she sheepishly said "I don't know who they are, I just thought it looked cool." I was instantly crushed.

GenXer here with teenage daughters, this hits the nail on the head! The newest trend they introduced me to is “coquette”, before that it was “dark academia”, and before that I think it was something like “autumn vibes”. From your comparisons, it seems like you may be thinking of a subcategory of the coquette aesthetic, rather than the overall aesthetic. If Im understanding this trend correctly, the girls I knew in the 90s that had the coquette aesthetic often had white wicker furniture, a daybed, or a canopy bed. Their figurines often included a ballerina and/or carousel horses. I myself had not one but two vintage vanities in my bedroom, as well as the aforementioned figurines.

the cross body bag aka fanny pack 🤣 🤣 🤣 that's the first thing I thought of when the cross body bags became all the rage 🤣, but yes as a fellow GenXer who kept and still fits in many of my clothes from the '90s (both casual and office attire) I do get asked which online stores I got it from (so they're assuming it's brand new and not somewhere from a charity shop) and the shock on their face when I say I've had it for 30 years 😅. it has also not escaped my notice that many of the clothes sold in malls and online feels like deja vu because I remember wearing those exact same styles, colors, textures etc, but I gotta admit that the ones sold now has some subtle improvements like its made of better, stretchable / breathable fabrics, more garterized waistline and just better flow of movement.

The things that were cool in the 70s, and that resurfaced in the 90s so we borrowed them from our moms. These are the things that confuse the kids today. They label a shoulder length wavy, layered hairdo a "90s blowout" but it's really a 70s or early 80s hairdo, like the kind we would see in an old JC Penny's catalog in Grandma's house, or in a photo of our moms when we were babies. I think the kids got it right when they were only copying late 90s grunge, and mid 90s Kelly Kapowski, but they kept going and they don't know which stuff is 70s vs 90s.
