How to Measure a Garden

In this video, the Oxford College of Garden Design will show you how to measure a garden and plot it on paper. We will show you how to survey a site using Triangulation, running dimensions, offsets and direct line measurements. Then plot them to scale.

How do you ensure the 90 angle when doing offsets? I'm doing an rhs course and I think they want us to say measure FROM the baseline to the point, but I think your way is better. To do the 'swing' technique (especially on a very curbside irregular bed) to find 90 surely you really should do it your way..??

Thank you! Would be helpful to use pretend measurements and work out the example using the different measurement types. As a practice exercise to make sure our maths is correct.

In existing gardens, the straight lines between measuring points will typically be blocked by plants etc, so I fail to see how you can arrive at precise measurements, esp. when you are trying to establish 90° for formal designs 😢
