Technical Drawing was the only subject I ever enjoyed at school, had a great teacher.
I enjoyed technical drawing at school too, I don’t think they teach it anymore,which is a shame 🤷

I have an accurate cad drawing of every house I've owned, they always come in very handy at some point!
By an amazing coincidence, ten minutes before watching this video, I dug my own Rotring "rapid" A3 drawing board out of storage!
I'm planning to design a new workbench on it this evening.
Ahh Stuart, this takes me back, the old Rotring "Rapid" A3 student's drawing board, I bought this with my paper-round earnings in 1982/3 for my 16+ in Technical Drawing - Still got it, still use it occasionally !
I have done this on paper and using an Excel grid and have used it many times for planning projects inside and out, had problems in the past maintaining x/y dimensions consistently when printing though as Wysiwyg wasn't always quite what it states !
Great tips, I drew the house and garden in Visio and used layers to overly other projects or pipe/cable locations, this was the best thing I ever did.
... impressed with how vertical you drove your survey peg in and general surveying techniques used. The laser level looks useful and cost effective. I hope you managed to complete your remaining long sections. Another useful video 👌

I did something similar for planning an extension. I then took it a little further and built a 1:20 model out of foam card so I could see how the space could be modified. I find it so much easier to see on a model than just looking at drawings.

Not long ago, I measured the outside of my house, ready to make planning application drawings. A £15 laser measure from Lidl has been a superb tool to have, I just have to be careful to note whether or not any measurements include the length of the tool. LibreCAD has been straightforward enough and thankfully my house and garden are small enough that 1:100 fits on A4

I found this so incredibly helpful- especially the tips re: string lines and measuring at perpendicular points which didn't occur to me. I'm hoping to survey my house (inside and out) ahead of a renovation/extensikn. any plans to survey your inside?

Can you draw your own plans for planning applications?
We did for planning permission for building fencing and gates across our front drive. Precise measurements/scale wasn’t necessary in this case as the planning officer was mainly concerned with ensuring the aesthetic was in keeping with the front drives of the other houses in the street. The planning portal website is helpful for what exactly needs to be submitted.

The methods used by Stuart are sound. But, as Stuart is an engineer uses incorrect terminology several times. As a retired Land Surveyor and Civil Designer in Australia, an example of one, is triangulation resection is for intersecting two angles. Where as litateration is actually for distances. If there isn't a great distance of the point from a structure, the chainage offset method cab be used by measuring along a wall line or perpendicularly off a wall (base line), then the perpendicular distace to the point. As the manhole is quite big, any method can be used. Another method to ascertain a view of the ground levels intead of long sections is to create contours on the site sketch calculating levels from the bench mark using the rise or fall values. Once a level is known for each level point, calculated contour lines can be established by proportion over the distance between the level points to get the set contour interval. As a civil designer trained using the manual / hand method, the contours give a far better Interpretion on the surface.
Were you not tempted to stay in the warm and do if off Google Maps??? That would make a much less interesting video though! Have you checked your work against the plans on your Council's website, can't help noticing you have a newish house :).
