Tip, when installing chain tensioners, have the hooks going out and not in. They have a tendency to pop tires when the sharp hooks rub on the tires. Hope this helps have a great day.

When I was growing up in the 50's and 60's my dad had a '56 Ford and used tire chains every winter. It seems the winters were more harsh back then in SE Ohio. In either the late 70's or early 80's we had a real snow strom which left us 27 inches of snow on the ground. My one neighbor had a V-8 Chevy long wheel base 4WD that was stuck in his driveway. My other neighbor came to his recue with his six cylinder 2WD short bed Chevy with tire chains and pulled the four wheel drive out with no trouble at all. I later owned the six cylinder 2wd truck, it was a 292 six cylinder with a four speed (granny gear) transmission, a real work horse.
Yeah, I have the 2.4L in a 2003 Camry and the rear three head bolts stripped (one I just pulled straight out with my fingers without even turning it) @ 185K and obviously coolant was basically spraying out before the fix. I was pretty pissed. I don't buy Camrys to have to do major engine work at that mileage. And it was quite a bit more work than just the normal head gasket replacement. I also will NOT take the advice of doing all the tapping by hand next time, if there is one on another car. I think a potent hand drill with a slip clutch properly set would save a LOT of time and effort, at least once the tap is well started. I had to clear the taps like four times each and the tapping went DEEP, about 3 1/2" IIRC X 10 bolts, IIRC. A royal PIA. As an engineer I gotta say that if they can't get the damned threads to hold they need to steel insert them, or increase diameters in the design or come up with a through bolt design. Reading up on it it is not remotely a rare problem with many Al block/Al head engines, especially on that engine. It seems to me that Toyota is chintzing on the superb quality and reliability they used to produce, as my 91 Camry sure didn't do this. I have a TL with 310 K on it that STILL runs like new, uses no oil, the oil is still honey colored when changed, and at 300K, when for the first time I did ANYTHING to the engine and had to do the plenum and valve cover gaskets the engine looked like 70s engines I'd worked on with about 20K miles, almost no varnish staining, even, you could wipe it to shiny aluminum with a finger rub. Interiors and underhood plastic connector quality, though, Toyota is GREAT and Honda/Acura SUCKS, so there's that. The most surprising thing to me was the head checked flat after running like that...at least one good piece of very unexpected news. Toyota claimed there was some problem with the torque/angle settings at the factory. Yeah, right...if you believe that I've got a bridge ...
I have these V bar chains for my 4X4. Run on all 4 wheels when we go play up the FSR's. Only way through the deep snow and over the rivers with any control. Tons of fun.
Back in 2008 when we had a severe ice storm here in Oregon, I made it just fine in a 1998 V6 ford mustang with good quality, properly installed chains on the rear tires. Never had any issues driving on a sheet of ice. Yet I saw so many AWD/4X4 vehicles stranded or upside down in a ditch. I just drove slow and avoided hills if possible.
The video explanation is very good. I bought this renhotecic brand Tire chain not long ago. It is easy to install and has a good anti-skid effect. If you have troubles with your car, you can try it.
Very good vid. I put chains on my ATV and it's simply amazing how much more traction you get, I've yet to get stuck. It adds about a 600% increase in traction I've heard. I installed the V-bar diamond pattern chains, they are more pricey but they make better contact with the ground and you don't feel the bumps like with the ladder style, which are still great!

Nothing beats chains on icy and packed snow roads. But be careful when stopping that the vehicle(s) behind of you ae stopping also and that they ae not going to un into you because they cannot stop.
If your vehicle has only one rear drive tire, you can have two rear drive tires by engaging the parking brake JUST UNTIL the passenger tire engages and does not slip. Don't forget to release the parking brake when the passenger side needs to be passive.
I almost wrote this earlier. :-) I'm guessing you might have grown up in the seventies? I live in Central Florida, so not ice, but off roading in so called sugar sand up inclines (there are a few small ones in places) this can happen as well, especially on two wheel drive vehicles. The technique works very well if you have one tire that has much better traction that the other, like one off road and one on. Posies are better, too, for a lot of reasons, rain, illegal road racing (yes you could do it without risking the 'general public's' safety with a bit of thought, planning, and some lookouts well beyond the 'track' with headlight visual comms, which we always did. Other places were straight for so long in each direction you didn't even need that, at night, you could literally see them coming from a mile away, and most of the roads were VERY infrequently used. All that to preclude some car prude from jumping down my throat...maybe.
I use this trick to get unstuck on wet grass with my electric industrial cart ( all steel heavy duty cart with golf cart drive). Mechanical steering brakes would help because they allow you to lock up the spinning wheel.
When I lived in Idaho and drove a little Dodge Neon I often used chains. I got a lot of looks and laughs but only had it stuck once in very deep snow on a mountain road. No worries though, a huge group of snowmobilers came down the road and we lifted up the car and turned it around. Lol those were good times.

ADVICE from Maine'r..You can use studded tires as well on ALL 4 of your vehicle. Big plus. CHAINS work wonderful. Only use at LOWER speeds & always CHECK/INSPECT chains because they can come loose when least expected. They will wrap up & be miserable mess. Trust me i know. Chains are great for plowing OR going thru woods OR going to town to get supplies. Be very careful & make sure they are on correct & inspect often.... If your going to grandma's house for turkey dinner in a blizzard. PERFECT. If you going 40-100+ miles. Id suggest studded tires... Try using 1 (2) rollaway handjacks & it takes me 20mins to put on. Remember INSPECT them twice closely when you 1st put them on like he did in video. Happy Wintah from Maine

4WD and AWD are great options. However, watch a few videos comparing both systems with and without snow tires or chains. The tires really make a difference. And, as seen here, chains can help even on ice.

I had a PreRunner Tacoma 2WD w/ rear locker. That thing really went thru some deep snow, i put 200lbs in the bed during winter and put chains on before i attempted deep snow or snow drifts on the lake
Missed the biggest test of all - rolling at about 25 mph and slam the brakes on, how many feet to stop (measured with a tape). first test just chains on the back- second test chains on both front and back. Does the truck slid straight or slide into a spin. that is what i want to see.
You mentioned the V block chain was upside down, yes it's upside down but it's not installed wrong, that happens a lot you just flip the V block chain through the one next to it and it'll sit right.
I remember as a little boy my dad would put these on his tires before he bought a 4×4 truck. Our winters use to be much worse in Ohio when I was young. And I remember our police cars having the chains on their tires!
Yes he did he clearly showed the tire chains breaking the tire, as for the *BRAKES* he did not show the pedal or how he was using them, I would presume you brake slowly just like in the snow
I was going up Avery minor grade on ice in an Olds Cutlass, where it simply lost traction. I had to get out take a tire tool and bust a path to get going again. But a long bed small Toyota truck, it never had the first bit of problem. Also in that car, going down hill, it lost traction and I went down the hill sideway. Little Toy truck had no problem. Which an Olds has a light rear end,but so did the truck. I mean the little Toy didn't have the first bit of trouble.
I wonder what kind of chains or possibly snow sock would be best in deep snow. Lets say i am driving with my 800 kg car on ice and suddenly snow gets deep as 30-50 cm and i want grip. Some kind of big loosen sock with lots of surface would be most closest to tracks. i guess.
Go for the tyre chains. They are in a league by themselves. Back in the 80s when I lived in North Norway, I had a Ford Transit (European van) with rear wheel drive. Without cargo it was useless in the winter but I could drift and slide like a pro in 10-15 mph. When I came home on studded tyres and found my 250 yards long driveway covered in 16 inches snow, I couldn't get more than half the van off the road before it lost all traction. So I backed up onto the road again and put on the chains. Then I simply drove all the way up without the slightest hint of a problem. If I remember correctly, they were 4 link chains, otherwise identical to the ones in the video. I've never tried 2 link chains, but I believe the performance is about the same, but 4 link is more uncomfortable to drive on. They are less expensive than 2 link, though. If I were to buy chains today, I would go for the type of chains shown in the video (2 link with studs).
Yep. With my 4WD vehicles I have now, if I need to chain up its time to stay home LOL. I mean its not too bad installing/removing them, but I have no place I really need to go to that bad, including work. If I need chains to go to work, I don't feel it necessary to go to work at that point, and most of the people I work with are driving 2WD cars so if I need chains on my 4x4, they're not going to get to work at all LOL.
I live in the Columbia gorge&one section of I-84 between Pendleton and LaGrande has been closed for an accident almost every single day for the last 2 weeks! I'm thinking every single person that didn't have chains on is feeling a LOT more pain than having had them on!

22RE - great motor. They have their issues like any other motor, but they're super reliable and a great platform to learn how to wrench on.

No traction is no traction, it's always Best to drive slow.
My step dad made sure we could change tires and attach our own chains. Make sure the bee barbs connect to the road surface.

You should fit chains to the front wheels as well, even if they’re undriven. That way, you have more control over steering.
Just pass both ends of the chains between the "upside down cross link and the one next to it and it should straighten out, it's just twisted.

I like those chains, heavier but with how much metal there is to grip ice probably worth it!
I know alot of cities outlawed tire chains because they tear up the roads but they are a lot better on ice than all weather or snow tires.

I remember as a little boy my dad would put these on his tires before he bought a 4×4 truck. Our winters use to be much worse in Ohio when I was young. And I remember our police cars having the chains on their tires!
They must not use salt where you are. That’s a really clean truck.

You don't really need the ramp things, you can drape them over the top of the tire and then drive forward

Yes he did he clearly showed the tire chains breaking the tire, as for the *BRAKES* he did not show the pedal or how he was using them, I would presume you brake slowly just like in the snow

I was going up Avery minor grade on ice in an Olds Cutlass, where it simply lost traction. I had to get out take a tire tool and bust a path to get going again. But a long bed small Toyota truck, it never had the first bit of problem. Also in that car, going down hill, it lost traction and I went down the hill sideway. Little Toy truck had no problem. Which an Olds has a light rear end,but so did the truck. I mean the little Toy didn't have the first bit of trouble.

I wonder what kind of chains or possibly snow sock would be best in deep snow. Lets say i am driving with my 800 kg car on ice and suddenly snow gets deep as 30-50 cm and i want grip. Some kind of big loosen sock with lots of surface would be most closest to tracks. i guess.
Go for the tyre chains. They are in a league by themselves. Back in the 80s when I lived in North Norway, I had a Ford Transit (European van) with rear wheel drive. Without cargo it was useless in the winter but I could drift and slide like a pro in 10-15 mph. When I came home on studded tyres and found my 250 yards long driveway covered in 16 inches snow, I couldn't get more than half the van off the road before it lost all traction. So I backed up onto the road again and put on the chains. Then I simply drove all the way up without the slightest hint of a problem. If I remember correctly, they were 4 link chains, otherwise identical to the ones in the video. I've never tried 2 link chains, but I believe the performance is about the same, but 4 link is more uncomfortable to drive on. They are less expensive than 2 link, though. If I were to buy chains today, I would go for the type of chains shown in the video (2 link with studs).

Yep. With my 4WD vehicles I have now, if I need to chain up its time to stay home LOL.
I mean its not too bad installing/removing them, but I have no place I really need to go to that bad, including work. If I need chains to go to work, I don't feel it necessary to go to work at that point, and most of the people I work with are driving 2WD cars so if I need chains on my 4x4, they're not going to get to work at all LOL.

@ Josiah. A good start would be 5 mins per tire. You'll get faster after that.
I live in the Columbia gorge&one section of I-84 between Pendleton and LaGrande has been closed for an accident almost every single day for the last 2 weeks! I'm thinking every single person that didn't have chains on is feeling a LOT more pain than having had them on!

Some parts might look like a small lake but really this is part of a creek, if the ice breaks then I think I am in trouble.
