I played this (viola) in the Santa Cecilia Orchestra with Berio conducting.

This is a extraordinary series David. It gives an insight into your own classical music journey, connections to your other talks and substantial videos, but a personal look into your interior musical life. This I believe is the videos I will always watch till the end of my days. Thank you.

Thomas. I agree. Wholeheartedly. This channel is a revaluation. And this series is a miracle. Dave. Don’t stop at 366! Let’s keep this going. Wow. :)

Heard it in Geneva with the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande (Berio conducting & with the Swingle Singers of course) in those years. The texts are by Claude Levy-Strauss from « Le cru et le cuit” and by Samuel Beckett from “The Unnamable”. It was mind blowing!

Berio's own performance with the Concertgebouw and Swingle II is stunning. Worth seeking out in one of the Radio Broadcast Decade boxes issued by the orchestra. I first heard it in the old Live from the Concertgebouw series from Netherlands Radio. I was driving at the time and had to sit in the car till the performance finished just to find out who the performers were.

No need. Chailly will do just fine. I hesitate to send listeners, especially those who may not know the work, off on an expensive and possibly frustrating errand to locate an obscure version when there are several excellent and more easily sourced alternatives.

What fun! I'll have to hunt down the Chailly version. I still have a copy of Columbia Masterworks LP MS-7268 which was the original recording performed by Berio. I bought it in 1969 or '70, when I was completely obsessed with Mahler's 2nd Symphony. What a TRIP! and trips were very in back then. It is also quite well recorded. "And after each group disintegration, the name of Majakowsky hangs in the clean air."

I admire Berio's Sequenza series, highlighting various instruments such as harp, violin, guitar, piano etc. Like a series of miniature sonatas. I am not familiar with the Sinfonia so after your excellent video, am now willing to try it. Especially as I am also a fan of the Swingle Singers and any group like them.

I was fortunate to see it performed in the early 70s, with the Oakland Symphony and the Swingle Singers conducted by Gerhard Samuel. (That must have been some heyday for Oakland!) I still remember the moment of hearing the strings trilling out the Jeux des Vagues theme from La Mer. Chailly’s recording is my favorite, and it’s true what you say about the imbalance in Boulez’s recording. However, there’s something so compelling in Ward Swingle’s recitation, I still go back to it from time to time.

When I was a(non vocal) grad student (Tuba) at University of Miami in the late 80's, you could major in "swingle" as a voice major...I shit you not🤔

I had tickets to see/hear it when the pandemic lowered the boom. Canceled.

The best parts in the Sinfonia are the music of others… :D
