I GET IT! Ryan looks your tying an overhand knot with each stitch, hiding it in the leather and maintaining constant tension throughout the stitching. And the care making sure each stitch slants up. Skill bro, skill...

Hi Ryan, thank you for the video. I took up leather crafting after seeing you in Tuque. Iv'e always like making things by hand and thought I can do this. It's fun, relaxing, and I get a great sense of accomplishment. And it may also bring in some income. I've been struggling with my stitching but after seeing this video and making some adjustments to my hole punching my stitching is so much better! Thanks so much man. Wonderful teaching. I have two adult children interested in leather crafting. My dad did some years ago, beginner, but before you tube. He would have loved this.
I have watched so many videos on saddle stitching and just couldn't get it right of when to thread over the needle, what direction etc.....

I know this video is old but I will say as a newer person using better irons changes everything. I got a box set of tools from Amazon to start. After 5 months I bought new irons, not sinabrooks, but it totally leveled up my stuff.

I started leather working as a hobby, made a few wallets for family and friends, knife sheaths and longsword scabbards and low-quality Chinese pricking irons from ebay messed up a lot of my initial work.
I have been a traditional leathercrafter since 1970's they never had tools like this no youtube either, im proud to be self taught, i appreciate your every stitch, cheers donna
These pipsqueaks have no clue how hard it was to learn anything before the interwebs, or to be seen by ANYONE... they just don't know! Illustration: We do custom leather, we have a cosplay customer, he is currently developing his Thor, we made a belt for him (shin guards next, then chest plate), he picks up the finished belt, he loves it, shoots a few pics... three hours later I'm getting ready for bed and I see a text I missed, the creator of the Thor Ragnorak character says the belt looks awesome... THREE HOURS and our work is in front of the designer of the character. Before the internet, you could work a lifetime and never be seen by people of prominence. It's amazing now, so fast.

Sinabroks stitch hole punches are so much better than a watch hole iron. You can get smaller holes at most convenient spacing. Plus varying number of holes. Not limited to 4 on an iron. I use them for my 1mm thread on thick leather seams. Perfect.

I notice there are several options of spacing for the pins for sinabroks ranging from 3 - 5.4mm. What size spacing do you use in your videos?

Thanks for the video. I always thought I was using a pricking iron from Tandy Leather. My mind was blown when I found out I was using a diamond chisel. 🤯 I know you have made a few videos about stitching, but could you show the difference between them? Do you ever use a circle punch for stitching?

1 important thing i noticed is when you pull the needles, if at the end the one in the left hand is pulled all the way first, the thread stays where it should be. I hope someone understood me and i helped ;d

It’s called a Thread Zapper! About $8 on Amazon and so worth it!!! I got one after seeing him use it.
Awesome! Would be good to get your input on finishing a stitch.. i did my first stitch with this video but in the end realized you go back 3 holes right?
I mean, it's less that brass doesn't have to be strong for that application and more that brass has the right kind of strength (tough and malleable vs rigid and brittle)

Re technique. I note you loop the thread over the needle on the back side. Does this give a better looking stitch on that side? I have Al Stohlmans The Art of Hand Sewing Leather and he doesn't use that loop over but just mentions to always pass the needle through on the same side of the thread with each stitch. Be interested in your thoughts.
This is known as casting. It's an open debate!
i was deeply moved to see the difference. i too learned from uncle Al. I knew about casting, but never did it. there is a considerable difference in the way the stitches look. no functional difference, but the casting looks much better..i'm gonna have to switch...dammit 15 years and still learning...LOL
Hi Ryan, what size mm do you recommend and what about the prongs? I was thinking of getting one 2 prongs and one 10 prongs to start. By the way, I have no experience with leathercraft but I recently fell in love with it and I'm working on my tools list. Anyway, I love your work!!! You get great quality from KS for slant irons too. Supposedly Sinabroks was started by a KS Blade Punch employee that took their secrets.

I’ve never tried them so I can’t really say, but I’m sure they are great 👍🏼
I can't afford such tools as this, so I make my own. My first pricking tool was made from a stainless steel fork, that I shaped with a file and heat treated in my homemade gas forge. I never buy tools.
Maybe not this fancy tool, but I'll bet if you saved you could afford something nicer 🤷♂️

What size needle and thread are you using here?
What spaceing iron you would pick, if you had to pick only one size? 4mm spacing?
If it were me, I'd go with smaller spacing. Tighter spacing is more work, but nicer looking.
Hi Ryan, I'm starting up a small leather business and I have watched your videos for a while. You do amazing work and make even better tutorials and I appreciate it. I just ordered my first sinabrok pricks and I was wondering what type of thread you use paired with the sinabroks. I currently use John James needle and tiger thread but I've been having issues with the needles going through the thread and I'm assuming my thread may be to thick.
Can you compare KS blade and sinabroks? Both are same iron design...
What size spacing did you choose for yours? Also what size thread are you using?
Do you have some thoughts on when to cut a stitching groove vs just marking a stitching line?
The main purpose of a groove is to protect the stitching if it's subject to abrasion and wear. That's why they groove shoe soles. But, I think it also looks good for the thread to seat into a small groove and to burnish the groove after stitching.
Something like a wallet benefits from grooving. In and out of the pocket constantly will fray the stitching. I grooved the back of a belt I made, to prevent wear up against denim.

Great video. Thanks. Just out of interest are pricking irons designed to go through leather all the way? I see that pricking irons are tapered, thicker at the top and thinner at the bottom. This means that holes on the backside are smaller than holes on the front side. I am using diamond stitching chisels, which are the same thickness throughout their length. This means that the holes are the same size on both front and back. Which would you recommend?
I really like the Sinabroks. A very clean hole in the front and back. The diamond chisels are terrible. I used them when I first started and it just completely ruins the leather out the backside.
Which pricking iron measure do you use? There are from 3 mm to 5.4 mm.
What is the difference between a stitching iron and a pricking iron? Your pricking iron goes all the way through so I cannot see any difference. Love your videos. Awesome.
I do exactly the same as you do, but the back is OK, nice slanting, the front is unfortunately not. Any idea what that is? Thank you for the info🤗

Yea it goes super well! Its size #5 Vinymo. It's probably one of the nicest threads I've used.
Little King Goods I usually use 0.6 Ritza Tiger thread but it looks like I’ll be trying something new

It looks like a nice tool. My opinion though, the holes are way too big for that thread. Even after hammering, it doesn't look good. Actually, the back side looks better than the front, but is marred due to the fibers being pushed out the back side when the iron came through.
It takes way longer, but with smaller thread, I just prefer to mark the spacing and use a very small awl with very little taper to open up the leather as little as possible.
Awesome video. Love the production value! I am curious however how you get the flat heads in line with your stitch line? With diamond heads you just stick the point into the stitch line. I would think with the flat head irons you place the corner of the chisel tooth on the line - however it would appear you have the stitch line in the centre of the teeth??
Thanks! It's all about practice. The more you punch the better you will become. It will become second nature. YOU CAN DO IT!
What spacing did you choose?
I want to make draw blade, axe and knife sheaths in organic plant based leather. How thick should the leather be? Do I need rivets and why? I have no tools yet and am trying to learn what to buy. These pricking irons are the biggest problem. How many stitches per inch should I use? What other tools are a must have for only this type of project? Thanks!! Is there one great book that covers it all? PS I am in Germany so shipping can be a problem.
New to hand stitching. Not a fan of using an awl, is there a chisel or iron that will make a BB it enough hole so I don't have to awl the wholes aswell
