I had to replace my booster (99 ML320) and I decided to remove the brake fluid reservoir. That made it very easy to reinstall the master cylinder retaining nut on the left side.
I have an older 1995 E320, and my vehicle has a similar bracket. On my vehicle it holds a pump/motor that is part of the ABS system I believe. There are actually 2 brackets on my vehicle. The first one provides a little ledge for the motor to sit on, and the second bracket presses down from the top to hold it in place. I can tell you that if you happen to get an aftermarket master cylinder that the brackets may not fit properly...at least not without some modification. Mine would have required actually cutting, bending, and then welding the cut seam. Instead I just grabbed a couple of zip ties. It's a 23 year old vehicle, and it's not Mustang, Corvette, or Porsche. I can live with things not being completely perfect. Besides, the zip ties actually do a pretty good job.
Not necessary to remove the master cylinder from the lines, just work the lines behind the engine a little, and you'll have plenty of room to remove booster. Hold the master out of the way with a bungee if you want, but I didn't have too. Save your self the mess and the extra work of bleeding. If master is removed and it gets airbound it may need to be bench bled as well, which at times can be an unconscionable P.I.T.A.
