North Karnataka Food, Bangalore. Vegetarian Meals. Hotel Nalapaka Rajajinagar. Jolada Rotti Meals. Davanagere Benne Dosa. Girmit. Mirchi Bajji. Biranji.
An eatery located in the western suburbs of Bengaluru, Hotel Nalapaka’s rustic Karnataka meals are an experience one must definitely devour! Ms Kavitha Lingayya who hails from North Karnataka, set up the restaurant 20 years ago with the motive of sharing her beloved cuisine with the city. She first begun serving food out of a car shed, moving to catering to office-goers and then finally moving to a bigger space, Hotel Nalapaka.
In this episode of Gourmet On The Road, Food Lovers Editor, Kripal Amanna visits the eatery after it came much-recommended by viewers, to savours a North Karnataka-style meal for lunch. He meets with Ms Kavitha, visits her kitchen and also takes a look at how their famous jolada rottis are made the traditional way. He then sits down to a meal, and makes a beginning with tasting the popular snacks on offer, namely the Girmit, Mirchi Bajji and Davanagere Benne Dose. He then tastes the Thursday special Biranji meals, served with toasty jowar rotis topped with a big dollop of butter, he wolfs these down with a creamy brinjal curry, lentil preparations and chutneys!
    GOURMET ON THE ROAD RATINGS
    GIRMIT
often considered north karnataka’s take on a bhel puri, this snack is nothing like one! the addition of an onion tempering and gram flour to a mixture of turmeric stained puffed rice, raw onions and coriander is what makes the girmit different. make sure to chase a bite down with the fried chilli which perks up the flavours of this dish.
    rs 36. (0.50 usd)
    8/10
    DAVANAGERE BUTTER DOSA
the perfect lacey and crisp texture of this dosa makes you want to dive straight into eating it! served with a lightly tempered potato palya and coconut chutney. the crunch in every bite followed by the lush butter that coats the palate is what makes this a superb dosa! rs 57. (0.80 usd)
    8.5/10
    MIRCHI BAJJI
love the way they make the chilli bajji here. the lightly spiced batter encases the chilli but not all the way through. you can see the spicy green chilli. you taste the spice of the chilli despite the thick casing. rs 21. (0.30 usd)
    8/10
    JOLADA ROTTI MEAL WITH BIRANJI
this jolada rotti meal is wholesome in every sense! the rottis are light, fluffy and have a nutty flavour. when eaten with that lush butter and chutneys (the shenga or peanut chutney was my favourite) they are all the more delicious! the badnekayi is tangy and cream, while the thick dal is fortified with fresh methi and the madike kalu is cooked to that perfect crunch. rs 192. (2.70 usd)
    9/10
    BIRANJI RICE
this aromatic rice quite similar in appearance to a pulav is a popular rice dish in the town of ranebennur, north karnataka. it is served only on thursdays as part of the jolada rotti meals at Nalapakka. the spices, cloves, cardamom, are reminiscent of a pulav but the addition of the lightly toasted garlic takes it in a new direction. every grain of rice is also speckled with that special biranji masala. the toasted cashew and butter makes this a rich preparation.

For example our family & my cousins visited Hotel Nalapaka in Rajajinagar based on your feedback on 5th of dec. This is a mediocre hotel with nothing great taste in their menu which we ordered on that day like Girmit, Davangere Benne Dose & Mirchi Bajji ( which was on the verge of becoming ice cold ). No social dstancing was maintained. Our opinion was it's like any other hotel in that area for by two coffee

Yeah. I am from Rayalaseema and I can say that our food was somehow influenced by North Karnataka and we also like spicy food same as North Karnataka people do. After Telugu and Andhra Pradesh, Kannada and Karnataka is close to my heart. I love the way our country with diversity in many things being unified.
      Proud to be Indian.

I think so. I noticed her knowledge at Kripal's interrogation, she don't know real depth of food history, combination, speciality.
Mirchi Baji with girmit was popular mainly in Hubli as a evening snacks.
Mirchi Baji with Choda was popular mainly in Bijapur (my place) as a evening snacks.
Jolada rotti + stuffed brinjal curry + green gram sprout curry is a widely use combination here in Uttara Karnataka. Because throughout year we get brinjal and green gram sprout easily, cheap, rich in protein, easy to make and available readily at street vegetable vendors. Moth beans (Matki) sprout is only made at home not at occasion due to its high cost, sprouts slowly, have hard seeds.
Meal rate is too high. Best meal costs around 100/- in Dharwad.

Ok, after watching this I Googled India map, and saw north Karnataka bordering Maharashtra on one side( especially Kolhapur, Sangli). The reason being is that a lot of dishes are very similar in Kolhapur too. Eg: Jowar Bhakri is the staple of that region
Eggplants and especially the way they are prepared. Known as Bharli vangi.
Shenga and shenga chutney are like found in every restaurant in Kolhapur, Sangli, Miraj and famous of all the Solapurchi Shengadana chutney.
Even the sprouts mentioned here are called matki in Marathi.
Mirchi bhajji is another popular bhajji too.
Very similar dishes, maybe regions have influence over each others cuisines coz of the proximity to each other. But I liked this and the Maratha restaurant of the Lad's.The food at both the places look ravishing.

But the Sambar of Udupa hotel is just awesome ❤️❤️❤️❤️They are surviving in 1st Block Rajajinagar from so many many years (Only people of 1st block Rajajinagar know the secret🤐🤐🤐)Currently sitting at Montreal, my eyes were so happy n greatful and my stomach too..... Sir The Papad you tasted is made from Alsandi Kalu, Yesiru kalu and Urad dal. A green Seed slightly bigger than the Madike kalu palya you had. The Alsandi kalu is also used to make Vada [Just like Urad Dal/Udduinna Vada ] as morning snack with puffed rice in parts of North Karanataka and Hyderbad Karanataka region like Bellary, Raichur. Also to mention that the three chutney powder you had [Gurellu, Ground Nut and Kadle pudi] goes well with curds. During our childhood these chutneys were mixed with hot oil and smeared on the hot Jolada rotti and eaten with onion and green chilli. One thing I admired in your show is that you have never criticized any food you have tasted since most of the food is prepared with lot of hard work love and affection and you have given importance to these factors. Thanks for the genuine and wonderful show.
