I ran the inaugural Fool's 409 a few months back. It was a 414.13 mile race from Niagara Falls to Crown Point, NY. My base weight was about ~20 lbs. I used the Ultimate Direction 40L fast pack. I paid dearly for poor planning as far as weight is concerned. I left a lot on the table. Next year's race will be a few miles longer. As part of my logistical planning I need to plan to carry half of this year's weight. This pack caught my eye so I'm penciling it in as a possible piece of gear to pick up as I cross the state of New York again in '24. Pack looks great, guys.

For me backpacking is a means to an end. It allows me to exist in nature - to be a part of it, experience it while leaving nothing behind. Ultralight and Fastpacking seem to be an end in and of themselves with only secondary acknowledgement to the natural experience. This is something that I just don't understand.

By "leave nothing behind" do you mean, taking more comfort items? Or, leave no trace?
With ultra light and high miles I can imagine a hiker isn't soaking in as much of the beauty etc.

@@intothefoxhole7985 I mean leaving nothing but footprints. No cat holes, no toilet paper. Pack everything out. No washing in rivers... carry the water away from streams and wash there. I have yet to see an ultralighter pay attention to these issues.

@@pspicer777 I like where your going with this. I see pct people throw out orange peels etc. It took me a little time to get on board with that and coffee grounds.
Toilet paper is a big annoyance. I find it upsetting to see so much pee pee paper from day hikers or others. Because of this I have begun packing it out and not just leaving it in a hole.

@@intothefoxhole7985 I think in the modern era ppl forget the impact we make on wilderness ... especially in large numbers. The ultralight folks are focused on the wrong things. Sure minimize weight, but they should also pack things out, carry water away from streams etc. If that means more weight then it is a necessary tradeoff to preserve what we love. Be well 7895.
