    I'm almost 68 years old now, and this takes me back to my teen years, when, several times a week, I'd get a $50 bag of pennies from the bank and rip through them with the hawk eyes of a very young man. Naturally, back in the sixties I was finding occasional Indian heads and tons of really interesting older Lincolns. Sometimes in excellent, lustrous condition. (There was no PCGS back then, of course!) I grew up in Philly, so "S" pennies were the Big Find for me. Never got the S-VDB or the 14-D, but I did find just about everything else. Even a Flying Eagle or two. And then there were the bags of nickels and dimes and quarters. Same basic story. Anyway, you have to appreciate this collector's raw and infectious enthusiasm, his knowledge, his methodology, and his savvy editing. So, what's a person's time worth? Professionally, quite a lot. But this isn't a profession. It's a hobby. And hobbies can coax the obsessive from us. Friends, this isn't about making money, per se, it's not about an hourly rate. It's about something far more sublime: IT'S ABOUT THE THRILL OF THE HUNT! Thank you, buddy, for bringing it all back to me. A priceless 24 minutes. May you find your copper '43.

Anyway, I got all the pennies for helping........ you.... can't.... imagine: 5,000 Indian Heads. Hundreds of rolls of wheaties, 27 partial sets of book one of the Lincolns.... and... in ... a book.... stuck with all the others...... a 1909 S VDB. amazing value, but for an old pennie collector, just a stunning moment

    • @shananagans5
      @shananagans5 4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      No doubt. I am a 52yo woman but I totally got into coin collecting when I was a kid. In the late 70s/early 80s there were still rich pickings in rolls from the bank.
      The big thing for me was finding the steel pennies. My grandparents had change buckets dating back to the early 1900s. That was like an archaeological dig.
      I was not an extremely knowledgeable collector as far as pennies. I just went through and picked out the indian heads, wheats, the steels and whatever stuck out as unusual. I did find a penny that was only struck on about 1/3 of it. It was bent from the striking process and everything. Biggest error coin I have ever seen. Anyways, yes, hours spent hunting for something unusual.
      Unfortunately, very few kids are into that kind of thing now. I have a bunch of proof sets I purchased in the early 80s. I assumed their values would go up but they didn't. Values crashed because so few people are into coins now.

    • @jimthesoundman8641
      @jimthesoundman8641 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Wheat pennies were minted from 1909 to 1956, the obverse featured our 16th President, Abraham Lincoln (1861-1865) and the reverse featured two wheat stalks surrounding the words "One Cent". In 1957 the design on the reverse was changed to feature the Lincoln Memorial in Washington DC. So if you see a wheat penny, you know automatically you have an oldie. They are easy to spot.

It also helped that my sister worked at a savings and loan and would be on the look out for me. Later on I purchased the 1955 dd in ms64 condition. It's the only penny I still own and will probably never sell it. My friends couldn't figure out why I was always broke. I was always saving for the next coin that I couldn't find.

    I did this once - bought a bag of pennies from the bank - had fun going through them. This was back in the mid 60s. Found several Indian Heads but no more luck than you had finding the rare dates and mint marks. But got a lot of 1943 steel pennies and quite a few from the teens, twenties, and thirties. there was also a 1909 but it was a philly. Even now, I have a hard time not looking at my pennies and nickels when I get change.

    I use to save what I called Feather pennies when I was 4, to each of my grandpa’s split evenly to each!
    WELL now they have past one in 97 an one in 2008, an I was given all of them back at their death! So I have 14,748 lose an 3 o 4 of the books!
    An when my father past to soon I received all of his silver dollars, halves an quarters, nickels, dimes & pennies
    Now I am a Grandma an they will go to my Grandson when is old enough to appreciate them, an maybe 1 of them will be worth a ton, for him! I very well maybe sitting on one now, but don’t
    know it! Thanks for the videos ! It makes me want to go thru all of my
    Feather pennies!!

    I have just about every penny you showed. I haven’t looked at them in a while but I have a couple made in the mid to late 1800’s, a few Indian heads, 1900’s, 20’s, 30’s, 40’s I’m missing some, actually quite a few in these years, and they are hard to find, but if memory serves me I have all the 50’s up to 2004, then I stopped doing it when my last child was born in 04. Funny thing is when I was saving these pennies I was doing it just for kicks, at the time didn’t know they were worth anything, who knows some of the real old ones could be worth something. Then again maybe just face value...I might just get to the current year for something to do, who knows, my kids might enjoy them some day.👍🏻

    I worked retail in the 90s and to stay sane, I’d look for old coins and notes. I Found quite a bit. It’s interesting how one can spot a wheatie just by the slight variation in tone. I collected coins at an early age and am still interested. Love videos like yours. Thanks.

    My grandfather gave me parents a grandpa shaped piggy bank when I was born in 73 and collected Canadian 1973 RCMP quarters for them. 46 years later I still collect them, still hoping to find some of the rare ones with the different rim. I’ve got about 1000 of them now

    Well it's four months since this video aired and myself like it seems everyone else is wondering why I just spent this much time looking at somebody look through pennies. It's a real mystery. I can tell you this however, my wife and I throw pennies in a jar above the washer and dryer in the garage and I have those pennies about maybe 5 lb worth of them ready to go to the bank to turn into real money. After watching this video then I had to go dump all the pennies out and look for double strikes 1959 pennies 1960s pennies, and pennies I couldn't give two Hoots about before I watched this video. I found half a dozen 1950s pennies and about two dozen 1960s pennies and because he put them aside so have I. They're in little baggies in the drawer by the computer and I'm at odds to figure out why I have them, but I do. I also found one double strike or some kind of a penny that was hit wrong and I would have never even gave it a second thought if I hadn't watched this video. Thanks for listening to this rant now that you have about 5 more minutes into this whole video thing that you thought you were going to. Oh and I didn't find any Wheats either.

    I really enjoy your enthusiasm and excitement in finding a possibly valuable coin. I also felt the same way. After going through 1,000's of rolls after over 60 years of searching, arthritis slowed me down to an occasional roll now and then. My most exciting moment was when I thought I found a COPPER 1943 cent!! A quick check with a magnet dashed my dream of a big payout day. Only copper plated steelie. Lots of fun though.

    Finding a proof coin is just as cool as an oldie,,, out of 10,000 , you found only one ! Which tells me they are very rare,,, I used to do this as a kid for years ! I couldnt wait to go to the bank and get rolls of coins to look through ! It was work, but very fun ! Seeing your tarnished fingertips brought back memories !!!
    TY for the memory jog ! Lol,,, Take care, and TY ! 😁✌🇺🇸
