Reunite The British Empire I never heard a word about it or even noticed it. In the honest trailers thing I realized how much he did that. Interesting idea though
Okay. People led it up but the maneuver could j he screen junkies pertained to him putting both legs on opposite sides of a seat which is macho posturing lol. They didn’t show him leaning. Anyway it seems like it didn’t hinder his career😜
'Timeless' is my favorite Voyager episode, and one reason for that is that Beltran and Wang were finally allowed to shine. It was a glimpse at what we could have had if Chakotay and Kim had been given more attention throughout the series.
People always talk about what Riker did with swinging his legs around, but I was always a fan of how he walked in a manner that suggested he was ready to knock a door down with his forehead at a moment's notice.
@@juliam9111 Jonathan Frakes had crippling back issues from a lifting injury. Meaning he couldn't stand straight, or turn his torso properly. He does all his various manoeuvrers because the alternative would be a pained-looking plank-like turn and walk.
Chakotay is underrated he was really speaking his mind to Janeway even more then Riker to Picard. He even got Seven of Nine to listen to orders better then Janeway.Others would pretty much "beg" Seven to do something.
@fenrif valid question.Writers did fuck up to rush that path but it still made more sense then Seven and Doctor.Chakotay was alpha male and Seven was alpha female,Kim and Doctor were Beta they had no chance.
@@twoofthree And Seven always "tweak" orders she never did excatly as she is ordered. And others didn't even tried to order her only Janeway and Chakotay. That was one weird chain of command.
@@howieduwit2551 it made sense to Janeway to have Chakotay as her 1st Officer, since he did have command experience aboard Federation starships with Starfleet before joining the Maquis. As the First Officer, it is their job to be the go between between the crew and the Captain.
He understood Spock better than Roddenberry. When the Nerve Pinch was introduced, the script originally had Spock just laying out Kirk with a Vulcan strength punch. Nimoy realized that did not fit the Vulcans or Spock himself and suggested a more subtle method of incapacitation.
It's only recently that I've learned about all the hate towards Chakotay. I loved him as Voyager's First Officer. Janeway and him had a great dynamic to their relationship and I felt they formed a great duo.
@@eskanda3434 well, Shatner and Nimoy used to work together long before Star Trek, so there's that for you. There's definitely bad blood between him and Takei, and Dohan & Koening didn't appreciate him much either - Shatner had a reputation.
It's fun to pick on Chakotay but he's both a rational and an emotional person, someone who can lead and make sure the rules are follow, while still understanding the sensibilities and emotional impact of those decision in those below him
They didn't give Beltran the room to flesh out his character. Chakotay could have easily been as strong and capable as Riker and a far more capable Captain than Janeway with his cool calculating manner. Chakotay had a ruthless streak, tempered by his sense of duty.
Agreed. I feel like people just never paid attention to the fact that Jolene Blalock was a phenomenal actress in that role. Probably because most write her off as cast only for her looks. But man she could act her butt off, looks aside. She killed it at that role.
@@AxelAlexK I have to disagree. I thought her acting was average at best and sometimes it was downright cringe. I also thought it was annoying the way she was always thrusting out those plastic bubbles on her chest.
Dear Martin Pintus & Mr Red Fox I agreed your thought about T'Pol, so much! At the stories of Star Trek Enterprise, her character may be needed to be represents about the Vulcan, & our species "Earthlings" still couldn't explore in deep space, so Vulcan assumed that the Earthlings still don't know about what kind of difficulties will we need to face in the future in deep space. She could deal with conflicting other hostile intelligent species & difficult physical phenomenons when the crew of NX-01 also tried to get over those circumstances. Without her diligent assisting, the crew of Enterprise couldn't survive, I thought so. Those reasons why I admire her so much. I'm so sorry for my poor English…💦
I disagree, she was put there purely for T&A, they tried to repeat the success of Seven of Nine but dressing a Vulcan in an outfit like that was a bit ridiculous IF… her character was a green Orion Slave Girl it might not have been so ridiculous but having a Command Officer dressed like that would never get any respect just cat calls and stares
@@niyablake Sisko wasn't a first officer in the show. Although he was only a commander at first, he was still in command. He did not have a captain to be first officer to. The flashbacks and references we quickly get where he was first officer take place outside of the series. As a captain, Sisko was tied for second with Kirk.
I agree a bit about Robert Beltran's complaints about the writing especially in the latter years of Voyager. I disagree on his ranking on this list. Should be higher.
I think Robert Beltran should have been cast as the captain & Kate Milgrew should have played the ex Maquis turned first officer. Her character had a mean streak more suited to the role of a terrorist.
@@jacksonheathen2092 There's one problem: Chakotay joined the Maquis on principle, and he was more by the book (his book) and consistent person than Janeway.
I believe that T'pol should have been a little higher on the list...and during the times when Data was shown as First Officer, he performed the tasks better than most on this list.
I think T'Pol is very underrated, probably because Enterprise isn't exactly a fan favorite Trek series. Enterprise was obviously far from perfect, but T'Pol had better character development over the course of the series than Riker and Chakotay combined. Like the video suggests, it is possible that we could see T'Pol again given that Enterprise should be canon in the Star Trek: Discovery universe. If we ever get a Captain Pike series, T'Pol could conceivably make an appearance at some point. I think she would be in her 180s. (Vulcans can live to be well over 200.)
Happy to hear some love for Kira. It seems a lot of people dislike her and I don't get it. She was really an amazing first officer and probably one of the best written female characters in star trek.
I think this video underrated her. Definitely is third slot. I think the issue with Kiran was that the writers made the role for Ro but Michelle Forbes refused to have a link term part for some reason. So the writers changed the name to Kira and left the Ro personality. Eventually they made Kiran her own but for season 1 she was very much Ro Laren.
Love the Riker leg maneuver. He also knew when "not to duck" and was the only Starfleet officer to serve as first officer on a Klingon vessel in a "Matter of Honor".
Ummm Worf? I don't know, he just kind of was Martok's first officer on the Rotarran for 2 years during the Dominion war. Not just a one time cultural exchange deal, but literally earned his merit for the job with Martok's trust in a POW camp. Worf was Martok's first officer while still serving his position on DS9 for Starfleet because apparently he couldn't get enough work and decided 2 jobs was what he wanted. And since Martok was stationed on DS9 it was easy to do both, just leaving to serve on the Rotarran whenever it left, and helping Martok with paperwork back on the station. DS9 gets crazy in a really good interesting way, I suggest you watch it/rewatch it, I honestly think it's the best Star Trek.
Yeah, McCoy said that first part. And Kirk said, "Talking about his Vulcan eyes you forgot about his Vulcan ears." And I loved Spock's reaction. I had to laugh. Yeah, I can almost quote everything related to Spock. I started watching at 13 years old and fell in love with the character. I lived, breathed and ate Star Trek...or so my mother said. She may have been right.
I would argue that Spock is one of the three most beloved television characters of all time, along with Lucy Ricardo (I Love Lucy) and Barney Fife (Andy Griffith Show).
Spock is way more than just a beloved star trek character. He's transcended the culture I think. Plenty of people in different generations know and like Spock without ever seeing an episode of star trek.
Putting Saru above Kira and T'pol. No way. I like Riker a lot too but Kira should be #2 she's one of the best written and well acted characters in the franchise.
It's not about who's the best character, it's about who's the most capable first officer. He explicitly states at the beginning that Michael Burnham is a great character but utterly fails as first officer and starts a war. Saru is ranked so highly because he's very good at his job and has loyally served multiple captains in a professional and capable manner.
The thing that was so brilliant about TOS is that while you had Sulu, Chekhov, Scottie, and Uhura, the writers knew they had a finite amount of screen time and dedicated most of the to Kirk, Spock, and McCoy. If TOS had ran for 7 seasons like TNG, DS9, and Voyager, you could have expanded more on the supporting cast. Thankfully we got 7 movies to flesh out the TOS characters more.
I've just finished it and personally I'd say it's very up and down all the way through; some parts were great, and then it would lead to something I either just couldn't take "seriously" (as far as trek goes), or it felt completely half-arsed - Soong's super space emo kids just made me laugh at how badly that part of the show was put together, and throwing Big Show into it wearing green paint just made that plot barely watchable for me.
It was a good list I would also add that Spock made the perfect first officer because he never aspired to be more than a first officer I also feel that character chakotay is a bit underrated I always felt he had a strong presence in subtle ways similar to Picard
for Chakotay i really like his concept but unfortunately it wasn't played onto as much as i would have liked causing him to really not feel like a first officer and instead Tuvok feeling more like a first officer.. mainly due to screentime and just how Janeway has a closer relationship with Tuvok and has a lot of heart to hearts with him whenever she is struggling with something.. now of course this is because they are just really good friends but to me Tuvok just feels more like a first officer due to the underutilization of Chakotay.. wich is a shame
I always feel enterprise gets dumped on a bit too much. I always felt it was solid series and T'Pol's character was spot on, whom had a lot of growth in her story arc. I would have definitely placed her at least in number 4. I always found Major Kira really whiny/obnoxious and we just don't know enough about Number1/Una yet to barely even place her on the list.
Finally someone else who understands how childish, emotional, irrational and unprofessional Kira was. Lack of emotional control and hotheadedness isn't a good quality in a number one. She was extremely incompetent.
@@ingwiafraujaz3126 yes and no. Remember, Kira WAS NOT SOLDIER OR DEPUTY BY ANY FORMAL EDUCATION OR TRAINING and obviously wasn't Vulcan, not to mention traumatised child - she was, basically, Maqui-like attitude, and only later Starfleet formalism rubbed of her. PS: For those who understand the whole premise and problems ENT had to go against, this series was f.....ing AMAZING.
Honestly, Enterprise was the only other Star Trek series I actually liked other than the original one (I can tolerate next generation, but thats as far as I'll go for that one). I hated T Pol. She irritated me something awful. I acknowledge she grew as a character, so my irritation might be because I simply don't like the actress.
I agree that enterprise isn’t as popular as the other series, but I think one of the reasons wasn’t because T’Pol was a weak character. The problem might have been that they tried to make a sexy Vulcan.
Chakotay was my favorite. I think Robert Beltran played him masterfully. But I will agree that the writing just wasn’t there for him. It was such a shame and waste of a wonderful talent.
The focus of the show moved away from Harry and Chakotay and toward Seven, Janeway, and the ever nameless Doc. Tom and B'Elanna managed to pick up a few crumbs by their romance. And Neelix was largely comic relief.
Well, the character is a combination of what is written on the page and the actor’s performance. The best actor in the world can’t make a character compelling if the writing isn’t there. Saying that Chakotay wasn’t the best character is not the same as saying Beltran is a bad actor. There was only so much that was in his power.
I like him, but I agree that they never quite knew what to do with him. As was the case on many Treks (DS9 being the exception), some characters just wound up in the background (Travis Mayweather on Enterprise epitomized this).
They made him such stereotype that I'm surprised that he didn't make a uniform out of buffalo hide, come on duty drunk and run a casino out of one of the cargo bays
Idk, it’s genuinely hard to order Riker vs. Spock. I think you could make a good argument for Riker over Spock - at least, because this is about First Officers and not Officers in general. Spock is the more classic character, but we see him Science Officering a lot more than First Officering. Riker is a First Officer, first and foremost.
@@katherineberger6329 True, Scotty was more a first officer than Spock. Mostly Spock went with Kirk everywhere , leaving Scotty in command of the Enterprise.
The problem with Riker, or Enterprise D for that matter, appears in that episode which Picard was possesed and diplayed highly controvertial behaviour and no one had the guts or the authority to challenge him. Not even Riker, NO ONE stepped foward to say: Either explain yourself or get to sickbay or you´ll be dismissed under erratic behaviour. Everytime someone confronted him he turned the table to the person. The same happened with Kirk and McCoy and Spock stepped foward, Kirk explained his actions, they dropped the case and Kirk even dismissed any need for appologies saying they were performing their jobs. If anything like that happened on my ship be shure I would have serious talk with my officers, a captain must be humble enough to acknowledge that something might happen to him and he could also be out of his mind.
Yet, when Kirk body was secretly taken over by a woman, his officers even talked about mutiny. Aparentemente, there is no legal resource to "the Captain got insane/possessed" situation, which is the most common in Trek.
@@thiagodeandrade7081 yep, reading your comment made me think of Matt Decker, he was erratic, Spock couldn't act because he said he needed McCoy to make medical examination, Decker said he couldn't go to sickbay and asked the doctor to leave the bridge. If was not for Kirk ordering Spock to retake the Enterprise even though Decker could court martial him the episode would have a different outcome.
@@AlexFariaOliveira Yes, the Decker example is an even better one than mine. Aparently, unstable commanding officers can avoid being relieved from duty by refusing to go to the Sickbay (and since in all history of Trek no one ordered to go to the Sickbay ever got there...). Spock seems to have solved the issue by coup.
My list is blend of Quality & Quantity of performance, as follows: 1. *Spock* ...he set the standard very high. 2. *Riker* ...vain, lecherous pig I'd avoid when he's off-duty 3. *T'Pol* ...such a pity they over sexualized her 4. *Chakotey* ...he & Picard show how alpha males don't need swagger 5. *Kira* ...her arc won me over 6. *Tuvac & Data* ...both took the reins as need & opportunity arose 7. *TOS Pilot: Majel Barrett Rodenberry* ...bc she's The Most Versatile & Tenured Actor of the ST franchise. 8. *Saru* ...only bc Doug Jones elevates every role he's given. 9. *Worf* ...technically, but not a fan of Klingons 10. That little girl fm TNG who was on ship tour w/ Picard when disaster struck, as it does lol
I'd argue Kira deserves to at least be Number 3. She's also a freedom fighter with the resistance against the Cardassian occupation, and makes the most of a bad situation with the least amount of resources at her disposal. She LITERALLY put up a bluff against a battleship threatening an at the time, a lightly armed station, and forces the ship to retreat without firing a shot. She even made such a stand against the Romulans with a poorly equipped Bajoran fighter, that the federation ended up forcing the Romulans to stand down despite their initial inclination to allow the Romulans to do what they wanted to. Other first officers did what they did while having a fighting chance (a warship), every time. Not so with Colonel Kira. Even with little to nothing, she stood by her principles and would not back down, even if it cost her her life. There's a lot to be said for that kind of commitment.
Ed Thompson and she showed character growth throughout the show. Her rabid hatred of the Cardassians was tempered when the bureaucrat pretended to be a senior Cardi leader from the Occupation and she saw great bravery and spirit in her former enemy. Her time with Sisko as Emissary and her helping the Cardi resistance against the Dominion showed many aspects of her character growing yet she still stayed true to her core principles.
Hard disagree. I found Kira to be the hardest to stand and most annoying character in all of old Trek. She was always very angry, unprofessional, emotional, etc. in my opinion.
Loved the BADASS, 20 years older Riker in TNG finale. He's written and shown as a no nonsense, powerful Starfleet Captain, even if it's only one scene.
There was really no set command crew for the Defiant. The crew varied from mission to mission. Sometimes Sisko commanded and sometimes Worf and Kira commanded.
@@leto-nl and in Nemesis, the reason he was there was to take over as CO when Riker left to go Captain the Titan. After a time, Picard was going to be promoted to Admiral and make Worf the Captain of the Enterprise. I reckon Picard season 3 will tell us if that happened, but it was their plan during Nemesis.
@@richardlahan7068 Strange that Kira was 1st officer on DS9 but they let Worf be the captain when Sisco wasn't there just because it was a Federation ship.
Riker always putting his leg up on stuff n swinging it around chairs was due to Jonathan franks suffering a very bad back injury in season 1. He was in constant pain during season 2-7 as a result and putting his leg up and avoiding certain movements with it was him trying to reduce / avoid more pain.
When you put personal feelings to the side, T'Pol should've been closer to the number 1 spot. Her experience and knowledge of deep space served Archer more than just about any other Captain shown. And being that those voyages helped to form the federation, she absolutely deserves a higher spot on this list. She was also a pretty complex character, when you take in the fact that her loyalty was torn between the Vulcan high command and the captain that slowly grew to respect and admire in the first half of the series.
Same goes for Phlox, one of best characters and doctors in whole franchise. Also, his relation with T'Pol when they still really felt as outsiders commenting on humanity.
Very good comment, I agree. She really did help to form the Federation! I think several of the first officers would rank on the same level. This is why I dislike "from worst to best" lists
I would completely agree with you save for one fact. She often made very poor judgment calls. Pay closer attention. I totally enjoyed her character though.
T'Pol (and to a lesser degree Spock) are great science officers, great friends, mentors, and influencers to their Captains, but seemed to skip key first officer duties to the detriments of their crews. Chakotay and Riker seem to have the full skillset needed for the first officer roll.
She definitely deserved to be higher. Also, her knowledge of the other species and factions made her way more important than the other first officers. T'Pol definitely adviced Archer out of some hairy situations.
The Enterprise was one of the better Star Trek franchises in my opinion, definitely better than DS9, more action than STNG in the early years. The Voyagers lost in space premise got old quick for me. The Enterprise prequel was interesting, having to use the least technology to come up with interesting solutions out of their dilemma.
I remember having a tantrum when I was about 5 years old because my step grandma wouldn’t let me to stay up to watch the ‘Mr. Spock programme’ (The Devil in the Dark)….. he was my mother’s favourite character and I always shed a tear in that last scene in his last scene in the Kelvin timeline. LL&P Spock, RIP Leonard Nimoy….
I liked Kira for the first few seasons, but her character didn't evolve in directions I wanted and I was fed up with her by the end. T'Pol's problem is the nature of Vulcan characters didn't allow her much room to differentiate herself from Spock playing the same role as Spock. She'd probably be my favorite if Spock never existed, but that's not how it works. Any new Vulcan character needs fantastic writing to stand out.
@@maninredhelm Kira's character grew so much emotionally over the 7 seasons of DS9. She started out as a young Bajoran resistance fighter who didn't trust anyone or anything to a grown-up woman who was willing to put her suspicions and hatreds aside and help the Cardassian resistance get rid of the Dominion.
I knew they would end with Riker and Spock before even viewing the last two choices. Definitely the best of the bunch and best liked by most fans as number ones.
Thank you for making Spock number one of all the 1st officers because out of all the others I can't think of a single one who deserves that spot more than Spock because in my opinion he is the very embodiment of Trek and a tough act to follow and when he died in The Wrath of Khan I actually cried because he readily risked his life for the crew of the Enterprise.
I'd have ranked the dog above Burnham. Shame Kira isn't higher on the list, she is (in my mind at least) the best character in Trek. With a great arc throughout DS9, she goes from strength to strength dealing with her harrowing past and contending with all that the station has to contend with over an eventful seven years. Again, this is all due to an amazing actor in Nana Visitor and some truly great writing from the show that is the pinnacle of Trek.
Hard disagree. I found Kira to be the hardest to stand and most annoying character in all of old Trek. She was always very angry, unprofessional, emotional, irrational, etc. in my opinion.
I just saw " A year in Hell" for the first time. Don't know how I missed it and it featured Robert Beltran with some decent lines. Your right, he was pushed to the side.
Riker was a bit of a role model of a man when I was growing up. He had the swagger, leadership, great smile and twinkle in the eye, was a ladie's man and a macho without toxic masculinity.
To be honest, I'm kind of disappointed we never got to see data as Number One. Thanks Nemesis. After all, it turned out he was a pretty ok captain, when it came right down to it, firm but confidential.
I liked Discovery, the few episodes I've seen of it. Other than Enterprise, Voyager, TNG, and the original series, it's the only one I cared for. I watched a few episodes of DS9 and just couldn't stand the Ferengi so I quit watching it.
@@SRWill64 I meant it more in the sense of Discovery has had 2 seasons and you can't really compare those first officers against characters of a complete series. The Discovery characters are still developing.
I don’t believe that Kira was anti-Federation. Her people had finally gotten rid of those that had been raping and pillaging her planet for decades. Now, someone else comes in also claiming to be friends. She’s right to not trust Starfleet right away.
She was in the beginning, but she changed her mind later in the series. She even tells Sisko that she didn't want the Federation commanding Deep Space 9
Hard disagree. I found Kira to be the hardest to stand and most annoying character in all of old Trek. She was always very angry, unprofessional, emotional, irrational, etc. in my opinion.
Voyager is a lesson in having all the tools for success and still failing. They had a phenomenal cast, Robert Beltran especially. He was amazing, and were it not for the writers messing up a lot of the show, he would have proven that he was just as solid as Kira, and would have been just as beloved.
@Leo Peridot Solid, unremarkable, but certainly NOT shitty. Of course difference between most and e.g. Patrick Stewart is quite visible even for untrained people... still, despite difficulties, they did good job for which I'm personally greatfull.
@Eddie Kalista - well... no; Paramount promised a LOT, but underdelivered. Voyager ,to live up to original plans (extended Maqui plot, Hirogen and 8472 as regular antagonists, long story arcs) would require level of planning that went to SG:U and BSG combined and GoT or Firefly budget per episode.
Burnham's Captain had actually listened to her then they could have stopped the Klingons and stop the war before millions had died Captain Giorgio was a fool not to attack when she had the advantage
Actually, those times Riker was coking his foot on top of the console was when he was on watch. As a person who spent an awful lot of time aboard a Naval bridge, you do a lot of standing around, especially during the night watch.
John Winchester3567 i skipped a few episodes i could tell really didn’t want to watch from the beginning when watching voyager for the first time. Most of them were seven of nine episodes
@John Winchester3567 Hmm, actually she was what saved the show. She's the reason they just got rid of Kes. They literally wanted to sex up the show to attract male audiences.
Ha ha my two least favorite crew members in one sentence. Everything about Chakote was boring, but I didn't hate him like I hated every elementary particle of Neelix.
F I N A L L Y someone who understands that Burnham shouldn’t be in charge of things. She’s a great vigilante, heroic or whatever, fine sure, but not a good number one and certainly not an ideal captain
1) Spock - Seriously, who else should be top of the list. 2) Kira - Did more with less and great character development. 3)T'Pol - Enterprise was sorely underrated, and T'Pol always had Archer's back. 4) Riker - Riker was pouty to Capt. Jellicoe, Got the Ship taken over by Ferengi, and was in command when the Enterprise D was destroyed.
Kira isn't really a Star Fleet officer though is she...... and Sisko wasn't a captain till late in the series. Riker usually comes to his full strength when he's forced to act as Captain when Picard is not on the ship, so that's why we know he's rated so high.
Spock, then Data (though he was a commander, he did get to be 1st for a bit)... most everyone else meh. I hate placing Riker, he's such a smug dick, but he was a good #1. Oh crap, I totally forgot T'Pol. She's the only reason I even watched Enteprise (gah Scott Bakula ruined that show for me - i just couldn't watch it without thinking of Quantum Leap).
Hard disagree. I found Kira to be the hardest to stand and most annoying character in all of old Trek. She was always very childish, angry, unprofessional, emotional, etc. in my opinion.
Your list seems spot on to me, except for the Discovery folks. I haven't had the opportunity to see that series, so I couldn't place them. Great job collating the Riker leg-lift sequence.
I finally watched the whole video. Of course I agree with #1 and #2. In both cases they complemented each other. Kirk was the brawn and Spock was the brains. With Picard and Riker it was the other way around. When Jaleco took command, a clash was inevitable. You can't have two alpha dogs in command, they'll just bark at each other. I don't know the story of Riker's command on the Titan, but I think a Vulcan first officer would be perfect for him.
@@thebaddestogre-3698 As he has all the knowledge of starfleet med including McCoys and is way more versatile thanks to his holographic form and the stabilizer, that definitely would be a good and sensible choice. Not to mention his personality is great as well.
Spock, Riker, and Kira are the top three. A case could be made for Una (aka the original Number One) but that's dependent on the Pike spinoff show becoming a reality. None of the others even come close (incl. the Kelvin-timeline Spock).
Hard disagree on Kira. I found her to be the hardest to stand and most annoying character in all of old Trek. She was always very childish, angry, unprofessional, emotional, etc. in my opinion. Lack of emotional control (also to the captain) is hardly a good quality in a number one.
@@ingwiafraujaz3126 I agree, she may be fitting as a resistance member agains an occupational force, but she never really got that out of her system, which is why she was unfitting as first officer
I am unbelievably happy that Star Trek has found not only One great actor to play Spock, but Three! Zachary Quinto and Ethan Peck both bring so much to the great character that Leonard Nimoy bought to life.
I would put Kira on 3 or even 2 but otherwise it's a solid list. Even though I can't believe you praising Burnham that much. One of the most unlikeable characters in TV history.
He was exceptional, especially because he started the job in such a hard to handle position. Could have gone all downhill when they stranded with the Maki, but he made the rules clear.
@Tin Man I liked Kira but her character had several roles and so I don't think she really fits neatly into the category. It's part of what made DS9 a more dynamic show in my opinion but strictly as a "first officer" there are definitely more than a few times where she stepped outside those boundaries lol.
Hard disagree. I found Kira to be the hardest to stand and most annoying character in all of old Trek. She was always very childish, angry, unprofessional, emotional, etc. in my opinion. Lacking emotional control, even against the captain, isn't a good quality in a number one.
@@VuotoPneumaNN Indeed, dude. I'll substantiate it more so you may understand my point better: The question is if Kira should be ranked higher in terms of competence among the other Starfleet first officers. Taking aside that she isn't Starfleet, her good story arc alone doesn't make her one of the best. Do you think obnoxious hotheadedness and combativeness is a good quality for a first officer? I guess the idea was to add a strong, feminist character. But in my eyes, Beverly, Janeway, Jadzia, Seven and many others fit that description w/o that lack of emotional control. So why was she made first officer? There must have been someone more qualified than her on all of Bajor. Someone who could get the same job done but in a professional manner. Not necessarily always exactly by the rules, but just without that unconducive attitude. Or they could have made her some other type of officer, other than first officer. Perhaps she could've received training first, and promoted to first officer later. In any case, she wasn't quite fit for the job at all at the start. And to be honest, you don't need Starfleet training in order to be less bitchy etc. than she was - that's more of a personality thing than anything. In the beginning, Sisko had to constantly tell her off and she wasn't adding much that any other first officer couldn't have; she was more a pain in the butt. Yet the writers made Sisko say even then that she was invaluable and irreplaceable. I found that totally undeserved. After TNG and Voyager, I liked Star Trek for its competent and mature main characters. DS9 mostly still had that, except for Kira. She ruined many episodes for me with her demeanor.
All i know is, Spock will likely always be number one. Its really a simple question to ask yourself. If you were captain, who out of all of these people, would you want as your first officer? Spock wins that contest easily.
Spock’s number one!!. Just as I thought he would be. Always and forever. Even though Zach Quinto’s absolutely perfect for the role of Mr. Spock, Leonard Nimoy’s the original. He’s completely irreplaceable which is why I get very sad when I see Mr. Spock being played by someone else. Zach Quinto’s absolutely made for the role as Leonard Nimoy’s younger half. But nobody can replace Leonard Nimoy’s Mr. Spock because it’s as if he’s the brilliant creation of Leonard Nimoy, NOT Gene Roddenberry. We will always have fond memories of Leonard Nimoy as Mr. Spock 🖖!😢😭❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️. I also wished that Leonard Nimoy didn’t smoke so he would be true to Mr. Spock’s iconic ‘live long and prosper’,
You forgot Worf? He was technically 1st officer on the Defiant under Sisko from the 4th season on. Also, he was loaned out to the Klingon fleet whenever ever General Martog needed a exo, including when the Dominion controled DS9. He also served Captain of the Defiant whenever Sisko couldn't command it for some reason & he was also loaned out to the Klingons when they needed a Captain
Commander Data is absolutely the best back-up XO imho. As a kid watching TNG I had hoped he'd become one over the course of the series in his own right, not just when circumstances required.
5. T'Pol- there's always risk in doing a prequel series. We already had a Vulcan first officer. Why did we have to have another one? 4. Kira- Sisko had so many other relationships going on in his life that this one between him and Kira suffered. The best episode with these two was progress. 3. Chakotay- I don't think any first officer challenged their captain more than he did. But, their relationship never suffered and that's fantastic. 2. Riker- Riker could challenge Picard at times too but his raltionship was all business except when he was off the clock. He had a sense of humor about him. The reason he edges Chakotay is because he was a mentor towards Wesley Crusher. 1. Spock- The legend. The character who would spurn all other alien characters. But, Spock wasn't just any alien. He was an alien/human hybrid. Which made him all the more interesting.
1. I don't think Kira was anti-Federation. Anti-Starfleet maybe, but I don't remember if she was ant-Feds 2. Riker, like the rest of the crew, was poorly written in the first season 3. Where's Decker? If you're going to do an honorable mention for a dog, you could at least mention Kirk's First Officer from the first movie. He did exactly what a First Officer is supposed to do
Kira, initially at least, wanted Bajor to reassert its independence without outside help. She wasn't necessarily _anti_ Starfleet _or_ the Federation, she just didn't want them involved. And honestly even if she was spiky towards some of her Starfleet colleagues, she seemed much _more_ angry at the Bajoran provisional government for inviting the Federation in than at the Federation for accepting the invitation. So you're more right than you think there! From an in universe perspective, maybe you're right that Will Decker should be on this list. But if I recall correctly, the actor himself got done for feeling up kids, even admitting to it. So I'd _guess_ his omission is kinda like... probably the same reason you're unlikely to see Dr. Huxtable on any modern lists of the "greatest TV doctors".
Decker would be last if he was included as his persona is bad for a number one but would make a better helms officer like Tom Paris who would also make a bad number one.
A typical top 10 list. Reminds me of the top 100 rock bands lists, “who the hell is that band, never heard of them?” I’ve been a trekkers since the start, and my list is: 1. Spock 2. Riker 3. Chakotay 4. Major Kira 5. Naru .....the rest.
Time index: 10:41. I disagree with your point about Jellicoe not wanting to work with the Enterprise-D crew... and I will try to argue why. Edward Jellicoe was more of the formal type of Captain, a man used to lead with a crew who knew and understood his manner of doing things. He was assigned to the Enterprise-D with little time to prepare, away from his handpicked crew who understood his way of doing things. He was forced to deal with a crew he didn't know, on a ship he didn't know, he was heading into a situation he had little time to prepare for all because of his experience in dealing with the Cardassians at that point in time. This was a matter that Nechayev pointed out to Will Riker that he was not the man for this particular job. Riker protested this because he felt slighted, he had been cheated out of a command he had wanted. Jellicoe saw a crew that was used to another man's way of doing things so he had a lot of work to do in a very very short span of time, he was told "Oh fuck, we could be going to war in as little as two days, get that crew up to speed. I don't care what you do.." Jellicoe had NO time to plan or to prepare, he also couldn't bring his own crewmembers with him. So he was forced to work with an unknown crew for an unknown amount of time, heading into a situation that could get real stupid, real fast. Jellicoe DID care... He tried to bond with these people... It was even shown on screen... He bonded with other members of the crew other than Riker. One is not always going to get along with everyone they meet... Sometimes it happens... There is a line from TOP GUN that underlies my point well. "You might not like the guys you're flying with, they may not like you... and sometimes that's just the way it goes. Thank you.
I rate Chakotay very highly, he should have been number 3 on the list, if not jointly number 2. My kids and I met Robert Beltran in the early 2000s, he is a gracious, polite and lovely man, his character deserved better than the writers gave him.
"Popping his leg over a chair"
That's the Riker Maneuver, and don't you forget it!
Did you see "Honest Trailer" about Star Trek TNG?!?
The Riker Maneuver was well documented in that video.
Matheus Reis the whole thing was a laugh riot but the Ryker maneuver was one of the best parts. He did it more times than any of their other bits
Reunite The British Empire I believe so. Read somewhere he used to be a furniture mover or something along those lines.
Poor Robert Beltran. In the few episodes he was actually allowed to act, he was damn good. But the writers essentially abandoned him and Harry Kim.
Yeah, really. They didn't even give Harry the dignity of lieutenant rank.
@Ken D Good point. Harry scored about as often as he was promoted.
Beltons character really wasnt a real 2nd officer since he was only that in the Delta space .
'Timeless' is my favorite Voyager episode, and one reason for that is that Beltran and Wang were finally allowed to shine. It was a glimpse at what we could have had if Chakotay and Kim had been given more attention throughout the series.
@@speedracer1945 He was second in command of a Federation starship, so I'd say he qualifies.

@@howieduwit2551 it made sense to Janeway to have Chakotay as her 1st Officer, since he did have command experience aboard Federation starships with Starfleet before joining the Maquis. As the First Officer, it is their job to be the go between between the crew and the Captain.
Agreed
Leonard Nimoy was the great creative genius that realized Gene Roddenberry's Vision!
He understood Spock better than Roddenberry. When the Nerve Pinch was introduced, the script originally had Spock just laying out Kirk with a Vulcan strength punch. Nimoy realized that did not fit the Vulcans or Spock himself and suggested a more subtle method of incapacitation.
@@CatoNovus Yes I believe Leonard Nimoy really made the show, if he wasn’t on it I doubt it would have had the same impact.

Tirpitz7 yeahhh I loved chakotay
I agree. Just finished watching the whole series again last night.
The more I watch voyager the more I enjoy chakotay’s role as first officer.
@Tin Man yeah but that's the writer's fault for focusing on Seven and the Doctor pretty much.
He was a very good first officer.
It's fun to pick on Chakotay but he's both a rational and an emotional person, someone who can lead and make sure the rules are follow, while still understanding the sensibilities and emotional impact of those decision in those below him
He had a great role and speech in VOY "Distant Origin". One of the best episodes of the franchise.
They didn't give Beltran the room to flesh out his character. Chakotay could have easily been as strong and capable as Riker and a far more capable Captain than Janeway with his cool calculating manner. Chakotay had a ruthless streak, tempered by his sense of duty.

T'Pol is one the most underrated characters in Star Trek history.
T'Pol was awesome. She's even better in the books.
Dear Martin Pintus & Mr Red Fox
I agreed your thought about T'Pol, so much!

I agree a bit about Robert Beltran's complaints about the writing especially in the latter years of Voyager. I disagree on his ranking on this list. Should be higher.
I know, chakotay had so much potential
I think Robert Beltran should have been cast as the captain & Kate Milgrew should have played the ex Maquis turned first officer. Her character had a mean streak more suited to the role of a terrorist.

I believe that T'pol should have been a little higher on the list...and during the times when Data was shown as First Officer, he performed the tasks better than most on this list.
But Data was never officially given the rank of first officer so she wouldn't qualify. Had he been though he would easily be #3 on the list.
@@InJeffable totally agree she would have been second on my list.
Agree, she would have been my second on my list. Also DATA was much more of a help to Captain Picard than Riker.
Data was good but T'Pol seemed more like a security officer than a first.
Spock is the best first officer in the fleet...
But don't tell him I said that.
Spock: Why thank you
Kirk: You forgot about his Vulcan ears.
Yeah, McCoy said that first part. And Kirk said, "Talking about his Vulcan eyes you forgot about his Vulcan ears."
And I loved Spock's reaction. I had to laugh.
Yeah, I can almost quote everything related to Spock. I started watching at 13 years old and fell in love with the character. I lived, breathed and ate Star Trek...or so my mother said. She may have been right.
retluoc yessss

Damn his Vulcan hearing🤣
Perfect quote for the video
Spock is the most influential character in Star Trek history. Picard is a close second.
I would argue that Spock is one of the three most beloved television characters of all time, along with Lucy Ricardo (I Love Lucy) and Barney Fife (Andy Griffith Show).
@@GregRohr That's a bold statement. But its food for thought.
Add James T. Kirk and you have a trio.
Spock is way more than just a beloved star trek character. He's transcended the culture I think. Plenty of people in different generations know and like Spock without ever seeing an episode of star trek.
No. Spock, Kirk and Picard are the 3 most influential Trek characters.
Agreed. So very, very agreed.
Yep. Other than Quark she was easily the best character on DS9
Kira grew from an angry young former resistance fighter to a skilled officer and leader.
Idk y. I hated her and I hated episode with her
The thing that was so brilliant about TOS is that while you had Sulu, Chekhov, Scottie, and Uhura, the writers knew they had a finite amount of screen time and dedicated most of the to Kirk, Spock, and McCoy. If TOS had ran for 7 seasons like TNG, DS9, and Voyager, you could have expanded more on the supporting cast. Thankfully we got 7 movies to flesh out the TOS characters more.
T'Pol is my third after Riker. Enterprise was a really underrated series. If you haven't seen it yet definitely give it a shot.
People lose sight of his Intercal role of the integration between both factions. He was extremely instrumental in keeping the peace.
for Chakotay i really like his concept but unfortunately it wasn't played onto as much as i would have liked causing him to really not feel like a first officer and instead Tuvok feeling more like a first officer.. mainly due to screentime and just how Janeway has a closer relationship with Tuvok and has a lot of heart to hearts with him whenever she is struggling with something.. now of course this is because they are just really good friends but to me Tuvok just feels more like a first officer due to the underutilization of Chakotay.. wich is a shame
Litch The Shinigami Janeway and Chakotay have a very tender relationship as well. I’d say overall she relies on him just as much as Tuvok.
Don't worry. Discovery makes enterprise look like diamonds
I don’t know but I like Chakotay the most. A Native American in a science fiction series was fascinating to me.
I like him, but I agree that they never quite knew what to do with him. As was the case on many Treks (DS9 being the exception), some characters just wound up in the background (Travis Mayweather on Enterprise epitomized this).
I really thought the tension between his father and himself was very well presented. Absolutely underrated as well.

A good point well made.

T'Pol (and to a lesser degree Spock) are great science officers, great friends, mentors, and influencers to their Captains, but seemed to skip key first officer duties to the detriments of their crews. Chakotay and Riker seem to have the full skillset needed for the first officer roll.

Kira Nerys on DS9 and T'Pol in Enterprise are my favorites.
how kira is literly so annoying and manipulative.
@@mikabarz9022 ?
Mine too!!!
Spock gave his life to save a star ship without a 2nd thought. I am only referring to the main Star Trek Universe.
Most don’t know this but when Star Trek tos came out in less than a week hundreds of Spock clubs popped up all over the US
Spock is the definition of First officer,
Riker is the definition of Number 1.
I knew they would end with Riker and Spock before even viewing the last two choices. Definitely the best of the bunch and best liked by most fans as number ones.
"I mean, who else did you expect?"
YESSSS thank you. He is unbeatable
Star Trek episode zero, "The Cage" had Capt. Pike. His "Number one" was Majel Barrett. The first "Number One" and awesome.
TOS was ahead of it's time from the start. A strong, capable *woman* as 2nd in command? Unheard of at the time!
"I can't get used to having a woman on the bridge!"
@@yourstruly4817 "Oh don't worry Una, I didn't mean _you._ I meant a _hot_ one!"
She was good. I liked her and she trained Spock. Still, I will always consider Spock greater than his teachers.
Absolutely
Thank you for making Spock number one of all the 1st officers because out of all the others I can't think of a single one who deserves that spot more than Spock because in my opinion he is the very embodiment of Trek and a tough act to follow and when he died in The Wrath of Khan I actually cried because he readily risked his life for the crew of the Enterprise.
I glanced over the thumbnail and thought it said "Star Trek's First Officers were the worst bank robbers"
Nah honestly I prefer T’Pol’s character arc over Kira’s
@@mathewdempsey16 T'Pol has a good run as well, the PTB definitely made more of her other than just a catsuit.

That's my favorite episode! A brilliant performance by Kurtwood Smith (That 70's Show) as Annorax.
Riker was a bit of a role model of a man when I was growing up. He had the swagger, leadership, great smile and twinkle in the eye, was a ladie's man and a macho without toxic masculinity.
Loved this list! And yes, your number 2, who was number 1 is totally true...love Riker...and Spock...yes, he’s the one...live long and prosper! 😊
To be honest, I'm kind of disappointed we never got to see data as Number One. Thanks Nemesis. After all, it turned out he was a pretty ok captain, when it came right down to it, firm but confidential.
Other than the random Star Trek Discovery entries, that was a pretty solid list.

Even with the ways he got jipped, Chakotay is WAY more awesome than this video gives him credit for!
I don’t believe that Kira was anti-Federation. Her people had finally gotten rid of those that had been raping and pillaging her planet for decades. Now, someone else comes in also claiming to be friends. She’s right to not trust Starfleet right away.
I didn't know that Ice-T and Fifty Cent were Cardassians.

Fantastic video. Irrespective of our issues with Discovery I think Saru did a fantastic job. He's earned the spot you gave him. Your list is spot on.
5:59 i feel like Una would be higher on the list now that snw has come out cause she is a wonderful first officer and character
Glad you made Spock number one on this list, it was the logical thing to do. Chakotay could have been higher though, he was a stud too!
I love the font accurate text treatments of each ranking.
Yikes. Beltran was a hair better than Kim and Kess.
He's much better than Kira.
T’Pol was one of my favorites!
The tension between her and Trip was sensuous and her restraint conflict palpable!
Yeah hard for Chakote to be good when Neelix gets more lines than him *smh* Neelix go away lol
Neelix definitely got a little too much talking time. Not that I hate him, but small doses of him are enough.
@John Winchester3567 IIRC, the show's rating improved with the introduction of Jeri Ryan.
Spock was my hero from my childhood, so I'm glad you put him on top. Thanks.
But - Riker DROVE the enterprise manually :p
I personally would switch the positions of T’Pol and Kira. But I like your list.
Spock, then Riker, then Kira, and the rest doesn’t matter. Although Kira and Riker may be tied. 🖖😀
If any other first officer argued with their Commander as much as Kira, they would be cleaning the reclamation chambers in the next episode.
This pretty much.
Hard disagree. I found Kira to be the hardest to stand and most annoying character in all of old Trek. She was always very childish, angry, unprofessional, emotional, etc. in my opinion.
Totally agree! Spock number one all the way!

Definitely. As a character it’s hard to beat McCoy, but if I had to choose one for my own ship it would have to be doctor from voyager.

Spock, Riker, and Kira are the top three. A case could be made for Una (aka the original Number One) but that's dependent on the Pike spinoff show becoming a reality. None of the others even come close (incl. the Kelvin-timeline Spock).

Totally agree.

3:09 I disagree!!!!!! RIKER AND CHAKOTAY are the two best first officers!!!!!!!!
I would put Kira on 3 or even 2 but otherwise it's a solid list. Even though I can't believe you praising Burnham that much. One of the most unlikeable characters in TV history.
If the question was, "Who was the best first officer?" Chakotay was arguably the best at his role as first officer.
He was exceptional, especially because he started the job in such a hard to handle position. Could have gone all downhill when they stranded with the Maki, but he made the rules clear.
Kira is clearly the 2nd best. Deep Space 9 did the best job of fleshing out all their characters and she was stellar.
Agreed
@Tin Man I liked Kira but her character had several roles and so I don't think she really fits neatly into the category. It's part of what made DS9 a more dynamic show in my opinion but strictly as a "first officer" there are definitely more than a few times where she stepped outside those boundaries lol.
Hard disagree. I found Kira to be the hardest to stand and most annoying character in all of old Trek. She was always very childish, angry, unprofessional, emotional, etc. in my opinion. Lacking emotional control, even against the captain, isn't a good quality in a number one.
@@ingwiafraujaz3126 Well, that's like.... Your opinion, man...
@@VuotoPneumaNN Indeed, dude. I'll substantiate it more so you may understand my point better:
The question is if Kira should be ranked higher in terms of competence among the other Starfleet first officers.

I believe you misspoke there. I heard you call Michael Burnham a compelling character, you must have meant brick wall.

Anti-Starfleet maybe, but I don't remember if she was ant-Feds
2. Riker, like the rest of the crew, was poorly written in the first season
Kira was borderline Xenophobic at first, I think she got over that within the first season though, S1E19: Duet.
Kira told Sisko she didn't want the Federation there in their first meeting.
Decker, Data, and Shelby were all no-shows on the list.
Picard is lucky, three of his Number One's made it into the list.

I don't care what you do.."
Jellicoe had NO time to plan or to prepare, he also couldn't bring his own crewmembers with him.
I love chakotay. But I do agree that the writers did him dirty.
