    They say replacing the Tornado but what is actually happening is that the air defence/airsuperiority interceptor force of Eurofighter Typhoons has simply reached its always planned multi role capability. There is still only 90 odd of them. Replacing a Typhoon fleet of hundreds (both ADV and Gr's) The idea was always to have the Eurofighter Typhoon in the air defence/air superiority role and the new JSF (the F-35 either A or B) in the strike/ground attack/ground support role. Last years Strategic Defence Review still stipulated a total procurement of 160+ F35's (still no definite decision on what type) but only placed orders for 32 F-35B's and they are for the carriers. What we need is at least 72 F-35B's for the Carrier Air Groups and at least 80 F-35A or B to replace the strike squadrons of Tornado Gr5's. This was the original plan before the F-35B grew so expensive and the British govt decided that the Russians and the Chinese and all our other enemies (the entire Islamic world for instance) would respect "austerity" and not attack while we were massacring all public spending and ESPECIALLY neutering the Armed Forces. After all that would not be cricket. Any enemy worth their salt would wait until we have paid back our huge national debt and had a chance to rebuild a military machine reeling from years of under funding and lack of support....... I always thought the first duty of any sovereign democratic govt was the protection of its citizens and the maintenance of its territorial integrity????

      Stuart DeQuincy Some very estute observations Stuart.
      The F-35 replacing the Tornadoes in the bomber role though, is a giant step backwards as far as redundant engineering is concerned, how can you expect a single engine plane with tiny wings be a bomber?
      The "A" model is a total dog. Not even STOL.
      I really think the yanks yanked their chain on this one.
      I'd have upgraded the Tornado & kept it for bombing until the F-35 was 20 yrs old & battle proven on someone elses dime.
      The Typhoon & Tornado can be carrier & the Tornado can take off with heavy fuel loads for better range, & of course much heavier wing loading, & can scram w same speed if necessary.
      *fun fact- almost no dogfighting or air to air combat has occurred anywhere, bombing civilians & PR stunts rule the day, so any excuse to have a bomber w stealth (F-35), or Multiroller capable Typhoon are kinda bullshite to begin with.
      The Tornado is the best bomber they'll ever have, & like the U.S. trying 2 retire the well engineered A-10 for the F-35, will probably find a way of sticking around...

      Eric, I agree that the Tornado is still a highly capable air frame. In the second Gulf War it was the only aircraft that the coalition actually requested more of in theatre. (actually what they wanted were the specialised German and Italian ECR variants) It is still a superb ECR/ECM and E/W platform and the RAF Gr.5 and other air forces IDS versions are still among the most capable strike planes deployed by any air force. However they are getting old, the last one having rolled of the production line 20 yrs ago and as such they are reaching the end of the air frames useful life. I would attempt to retain the youngest and best maintained of the 80 odd still in RAF service until they are replaced (if they are ever replaced!!) by the F-35A/B. Unlike you, obviously, I actually believe in the F-35. Without doubt there is a gamble involved as in truth the new stealth and immersive data linking capabilities cannot be effectively assessed until, God Forbid it is tested in genuine near equiv tech level combat! However the F-35 heralds an entirely new scenario in air warfare and I am certain that we will be able to leverage these new capabilities for an advantage.... how much of an advantage remains to be seen but believe me Eric we are committed to the F-35 and nothing short of the collapse of NATO will effect that decision now. We are the only tier 1 partner in the project and about 18% of each F-35 is British and if lots of other countries do indeed confirm their preliminary orders (which is looking less and less likely) then there will be a considerable amount of money to be made, who knows they may even pay for themselves!! A last thought in regards to the Tornado, it always strikes me how similar a story it is to he Hawker Jaguar which preceded it. Rugged, effective, supremely adaptable and still capable of mixing it with more modern combat aircraft years after it was introduced. They both, "did what it says on the tin" The Eurofighter Typhoon followed a very similar development path and reminds me of the Jaguar and Tornado (and in some ways the Harrier) in that it chose not to introduce loads of revolutionary and flashy new technologies but to just incorporate the very best of contemporary technology and be the best at what was normal for air operations at the time. The latest Tranche 3 Typhoons are the ultimate Eurofighter platform with all its possible capabilities fully leveraged. A superb air defence air craft but also now a fully capable strike/interdiction/ground support platform and I wonder if in a few years we will be lamenting the passing of the Typhoon with the same reverence we today hold for the Tornado?

      @@PlasticGangsta stealth isn't invisible, an F-117 was bought down in Bosnia, Typhoon has stealth paint tho.
      F-35 has the airframe of a stiff turkey, small wings on a football, w low wing loading, a terrible choice for an attacker r now.
      I'd wait till the jury's out on its maintainence expense, & proven reliability first, then buy.

      Also about potential sales, ever since it's entry into service the Typhoon has been crippled by not being a fully swing role aircraft, it has lost potential sales in Singapore, South Korea etc even though it won the trials, it just didn't have full capability.....and that is down to money, lack of investment....as always, even now it needs the AESA radar, let alone the LERX, CFT and thrust vectoring, all of which have been trialled.....but not funded. To be honest multinational programs are supposed to save money, but they don't really, , the increase in numbers built is always offset by protracted development, differing national requirements, bickering about workshares.

    • @1chish
      @1chish 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry but that is wrong. The Typhoon upgrade is the direct replacement for the Tornado. It was always intended to do this. With the older Tranche 1 and 2 aircraft coming out of warm store to fill the QRA and fighter roles this releases the later Tranche Typhoons for this upgrade. F-35 is a force multiplier, enabler and suppression asset. It can in no way deliver the weapon loads of a Tornado or Typhoon but makes the Typhoon a far more effective weapon. Most will be on carriers anyway!

    • @1chish
      @1chish 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jjkirbyy Well I have to say they are wrong. The F-35 simply cannot deliver the weapon load of a Tornado and is designed and built for entirely different operations. The Typhoon is the bridge between the two and the RAF have had two Typhoons in the USA working with UK aircraft in California on developing Link 16 and other direct data transfer techniques. An F-35 can get into a hostile environment, suppress threats, detect targets and then deliver weapons launched from a stand off Typhoon on to those targets. That is the new way and the Tonka was the old way.

    • @1chish
      @1chish 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No. They left because they got what they needed from the early design and aerodynamic work, were not given full control over everyone else and RR had better engines. Its why the Rafale is a direct copy. The first Rafale was a Naval fighter as were the first Air Force Rafales. The Rafale was not upgraded for GA roles until 2007 / 08 the same year the Typhoons were first upgraded.

    • @1chish
      @1chish 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      In fairness the coalition Government inherited a bankrupt country and a £35 Bn black hole in Defence in 2010 and had to make some very hard decisions. And I think they have proved to be correct. Harrier was being replaced by F-35B anyway, Nimrod was a flying deathtrap and financial black hole but we now have 2 new carriers and 15 F-35B to fly off them,, 4 new large RFA tankers, 7 new Astute subs,14 new Voyager tankers (while the USA has still not had a new one delivered in the same timeframe), 22 new A400M transports, and the Typhoon has been upgraded to deliver far more than the old Tonka. The F-35 will be a superb suppression and enabling asset for the Typhoon bomb truck while the Typhoon will still be the best QRA, interdiction and fighter platform in NATO bar none. And yes I include the F-22 because there are so few of them.
      The RAF will be able to save a fortune on Tornado maintenance and extra stores, have a choice of hundreds of aircraft to do whatever they need to do. OK the early Tranche 1s will not be as capable in GA as these Tranche 2 and 3 airframes but still have the same A2A capabilities and GR4 level of GA.
      Given all the new frigates and other assets now coming into all three arms of the military I think we should be pleased. Always need more but such is life

    • @tams805
      @tams805 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hardly any of that is thanks to the coalition government. It was previous governments that gave the go-ahead to most of those programmes.

    • @1chish
      @1chish 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tams80 - And there you make my point. yes Labour started some of these projects but didn't have the cash to pay for it. Stupid wars in Iraq and Afghanistan saw British troops with poor equipment ('Snatch Land Rovers' in Afghan? really?) and emergency purchase of specific kit for those wars that cost far too much money and were mostly irrelevant post the wars. (Look at what the British Army is now having to replace and buy now) diverted cash from long term and more beneficial projects.
      Want an example of how Labour talked big and did damage? The 2 aircraft carriers were delayed for 2 years because they couldn't pay for them. That added £1 Bn.
      That the Coalition Government was able to salvage most if not all of the new projects while making hard decisions on Harriers etc was a major achievement and laid the foundation for the DELIVERY of all the projects I listed. Its one thing to sign a contract and quite another to pay for it.

    • @tams805
      @tams805 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The Typhoon is great (actually in many regards better) in airspace we control. The F35 is more for penetrating enemy airspace, but is less manoeuvrable. That makes the F35 better for an expeditionary force (such as a carrier force). Well that and the Typhoon can't be used on our carriers anyway.

    Now the US needs a next gen fighter that can win in a dogfight. From what I have seen, the F-35 & F-22 have the advantage over Su-35 from a distance but not up close. If we are under attack and need to win a Air to Air fight, we will never do it, but it would be smart to buy these than spend billions of dollars in R & D.

      Not if that vehicle is killing our ground troops its not. And that is just one of the many (and newly added) capabilities of the Brimstone and upgraded Paveway. It can slot itself into a window of a building, kill the terrorists inside and not scratch the paint of a car outside. Unless that car has been targeted as well! Its all about accurate targeting to have reduced collateral damage. Its something the RAF is already a lot better at than most other Air Forces.

    nah you need a more durable aircraft armed with a 30mm cannon with thousands of rounds armed with about 20 missiles. keep the typhoon as a fighter interceptor but I think the typhoon is a bit slow at mach 2 needs to be mach 3 and be able to comfortably hold that speed and hold more rounds and more missiles. also we need a bomber fleet again nuclear capable bombers with at least 100,000lbs weapons capacity a fleet of about 300 should do. and a fleet the same size if not bigger than U.S.A.

    F35 ? don't know much about this plane but guess it's many times more expensive in service.
    Typhoon is an excellent fighter as demonstrated at air shows .
    The uk was always a leader in aircraft design and development
    and still. the problem with F35 it's overpriced and over here . BAE are doing a great job with typhoon upgrades and keep jobs here in uk. At the end of the day a fighter is only as good as the pilot. uk pilots are some if the best in the world if not best.

    F-35 is shit,....exorbitantly expensive shit, but shit non the less. Getting successfully targeted by a 30 year old former Soviet radar from Syria by the SAA over the sky's of Lebanon and then successfully hit by an old Soviet S-200 missle means your brand spanking new aircraft the F-35 is a flying turd covered in gold.
    It fly's like a broken winged eagle too,....getting shot down in simulated dogfights vs the much older F-16,.... 9 out of 10 times, i think a WW1 biplane would fair better.
    Dump the F-35,....buy more of these and a few Dasault Raphael's,....much better and definitely cheaper too.
