  • And we are back with some Breakfast in America.... sorry, i just wanted to say that. Thank you to our patron Robin S for the request to go back to this album. "The Logical Song" has been my most replayed song in the past month after first hearing it on here. An absolute earworm if i've ever heard one. And now we arrive here...

1979 was an epic year for music, with Supertramp at the top of there game.

    • @wadsworthaaron
      @wadsworthaaron หลายเดือนก่อน

In 1979, I remember "Get the Knack," (by the Knack), ELO's "Discovery," the Eagles "The Long Run," the Cars "Candy-O," Cheap Trick's "Dream Police," Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers "Damn the Torpedoes," and the Dead Kennedys' "Fresh Fruit from Rotting Vegetables" all making a huge impact. Though 1979 isn't my favorite year for music (it's 1967 for me), there was a lot of good stuff happening. In 1979, disco was coming to an end, the 70s blues-based hard rock was collapsing (be it band in-fighting, drugs, or a general lack of creativity), and the emergence of outlaw country and new wave breaking into the Top 40... the music scene was not really grounded in one or two (or even three or four) styles. It was an interesting time, for sure.

We were utterly spoiled in Britain from the early 60’s to at least ‘89.
I was 16 in 1970,saw Hendrix that year.
Also Led Zeppelin in the same year, back when tickets were affordable.
We took full advantage as in London back then, every night of the year there was a major band playing somewhere in the city, jump on the tube and go.
Saw every legendary British band (and there were LOADS of them) except the Beatles.
My record collection was massive, just like everyone else.
Supertramp were one of those many British bands that were a part of boomers DNA.
We had it best, sorry you missed the legendary gigs and parties.
But hey, thank fuck for TH-cam eh?
Keep up the good work young fella.

The album's last song "Child Of Vision" is my personal favorite (if I'm forced to pick just one). Like the song "Crime of the Century", they show us how you close out an album. Only this time it's a full tilt jam. That's why I love these guys. They can do any style of music and make it their own. Expect the unexpected.

About 2 years ago, I looked up a bit of the history of 'Supertramp' on TH-cam.....& found a short documentary. Nearly an hour into their history....it suddenly turned into a straight-up live concert. I can't remember the title, but I think it was from 1979. They played a lot of 'Crimes of The Century' plus the stuff from 'Breakfast in America'. Very entertaining.

I have been fortunate enough to have seen Supertramp “The Tramp” Live 4 times. Their live shows are a spectacle and brilliant. Each member is a musical genius. Rick Davies is my favorite keyboards player and John Helliwell is favorite Sax player. He is a blast to watch live. The bass and drummer are awesome and Roger’s guitars are superb. The only live show I put above Supertramp is Pink Floyd, who I have seen 4 times.

There was a TV movie many years ago where a teen son being treated for leukemia and his mom was driving him home from his treatments and they popped this song into the cassette player in the car and sang along to it as a way to connect and help him forget about the disease for a while. I believe it was from the Book Eric by Doris Lund. Take the Long way home always reminds me of this story.

Hey Lee, there is a fantastic version of this song done by Roger Hodgson, when he was playing with Ringo’s All Star Band. You can look it up on TH-cam, Ringo, and Sheila E. are playing drums together, Roger Hodgson on piano and vocals, Greg Lake from Emerson, Lake and Palmer on Bass and the rest of the band are all star performers, it’s a knock out!

Goodbye strangers my favorite on this album but the whole album is good😊 the cover art is interesting it looks like salt and pepper shakers and chess pieces and other different things that you can pick out. One thing that's nice for you reactors and us is that you aren't spoiled and ruined by over Overkill play on the radio from back when this was popular, but it's Timeless and you can still love it now all these years later

Great songs, love this album. Yeah I like Take the Long Way Home best of the two. My favorite, like you, is The Logical Song. Notice how the album cover is a stylized view of New York out of a plane window, complete with the waitress lady as the Statue of Liberty.

I was at school with Dougie Thompson and he was all about the music back then so no surprise that after a long apprenticeship with various bands in Glasgow and London he wound up finding success in Supertramp . Good on ye Dougie

6:34 "Don't leave Jane!" It isn't the women leaving; this is a guy describing his series of one night stands.
It is a concept album insofar as it is a British band's take on the American scene and their own involvement in it, in the late 1970s. The harmonica on 'The Long Way Home' is mimicking a train siren, possibly because the band preferred it as air travel wasn't trusted at the time. (DC 10s were falling from the skies to the extent they were grounded for US domestic flights in the year this came out.)
