In the first World Cup there was a dispute between Argentina and Uruguay over the manufacturer of the ball to be used for the final. So they decided that one ball of the two countries could be used in each half and at the end of the first half Argentina was leading but Uruguay scored 4 in the second half with their ball. I think this comeback was surprising, that too in a final.
@Vitor Carvalho the balls weren't as modern as they are now mainly being made of leather meaning they're heavier i would put my money on Uruguay finding a way to make the ball lighter
The best story of the 1st world cup imo is Yugoslavia them getting screwed against Uruguay in possibly the worst display of officiating ever, just ask the Serbs!

You mentioned Croatia in 1998. but this was definitely THE shock back then. A country formed few years before, in their first World Cup appearance with 4 million population getting third place is insane.
1986 - Spain blowing up the "Danish Dynamite" 5-1 after Denmark had run rampant in the group stages, where they had handily defeated Scotland, Germany, and Uruguay. At that point, Denmark was seen as the likeliest team to join Brazil in a future final but neither team made it. It's a little known fact that Denmark had the lead and the game versus Spain quite in hand when, just before halftime, Jesper Olsen attempted a backpass to his goalkeeper which was intercepted by Emilio Butragueno and led to him scoring the first of his four goals that day. That goal changed the whole complexion of the game and, in the second half, Spain ran riot while Denmark collapsed. That game, combined with Spain's defeat of Denmark in the semifinals of the 1984 Euros and again in the group stages of the 1988 Euros, led to Spain gaining a reputation as Denmark's bete noire, something which continues to this day.

That PoS doesn't even deserve the recognition for that. It was an injustice to an entire continent and for that combined with everything else he's done, he shouldn't even be ever allowed to play in any tournaments again.

I'm surprised that Bulgaria's 4th position in 1994 wasn't mentioned. By that time, Bulgaria had never won a world cup game, and during their USA march, defeated teams like Argentina, Mexico and most notably - the reigning world champion of Germany in the quarter finals. And I still remember Costacurta's handball in the penalty not being noticed by the referee during the lost semifinal against Italy.
I sometimes go back and watch De Jong's kick into Xabi's chest and think to myself: If a blind man can be the main referee of a World Cup final, I can achieve anything in life! It is very encouraging.
I will never understand why people consider Uruguay beating Brazil on the 1950 "final" a shock. Up to 1954 Uruguay had NEVER lost a game on a world cup nor Olympic games. We participated on 1924/1928 wining both times gold medals, 1930 winning world championship. Brazil up to 1950 had won only 3 times the Copa America (continental tournament) and Uruguay had already won 8 times. So.. lets see.. .A 3 times world champion and 8 times continental champions that has never been defeated on world tournaments Vs a Team that had yet not won a single world cup + won only 3 times the continental cup.. why the result is such a surprise??
My picks from the World Cups I have seen.. 2002: South Korea eliminating Italy and Spain to qualify for the Semifinals 2006: Zidane Headbutt 2010: Suárez “single handedly” saved Uruguay from a relentless Ghana 2014: BRA71L 2018: South Korea eliminate World Champions Germany from the Group Stage, possibly giving their Worst finish in a World Cup Campaign

Croatia reaching the semis in 1998 was a real upset, espcially the 3-0 against European champions Germany. I would choose that moment above the merely unlucky exit of Spain any day
I might be saying this with a little bias, but I think 1978 should have been Austria eliminating the reigning World Cup champions West Germany in the "Miracle of Cordoba"
It was cool to learn that it was west Germany and Austria colluding to fix a match in the group stage. Without that we wouldn’t have had all of the craziness yesterday with France, Germany, Portugal, and Hungary fighting for 3 spots.
Fun fact: All of the last 5 World Cup championships saw the previous champion team get eliminated in the group stage. And after France's shocking elimination by Switzerland in the 2020 Euro Cup Ro16 a few days ago (after being up 3-1 in like the 84th minute too), I can definitely see that trend possibly continuing in the next World Cup too...
The France shock elimination by Switzerland in Euro 2020 is also the Hungarian curse that began since Euro 2016 that eliminated Belgium in quarterfinals of Euro 2016, France, Germany and Portugal in round of 16 of Euro 2020, and Italy in semifinals of 2023 Nations League.
I would recommend you look into Peru’s 2018 world cup qualification. It’s a very interesting story since how at many times it looked like they were done for.
I went to the play off match here in New Zealand. Peru didn't have the best of games that day, I was expecting them to win. But they put it right back in Peru!
In more recent tournaments, you seem to have a strong preference for small, non-European nations unexpectedly winning a single match against a strong European side. But those tournaments really had bigger surprises. 1986: Belgium reaching the semifinals 1994: Bulgaria reaching the semifinals 1998: Croatia reaching the semifinals 2002: Turkey reaching the semifinals 2018: Croatia reaching the final
as a Romanian I am obviously sad that we lost to Cameroon but in all other games I have rooted for the African team. They've had a really good and spectacular team, and I honestly wouldn't have minded them winning the WC. They've been so unlucky against England....
Weren't they in the 2010 World Cup? Or maybe it was a Euro Cup that I'm thinking of (where one team scored in like the 119th minute and then Turkey scored after the 120th minute and went on to win the penalty shootout).
2002 world cup really was one of the greatest world cups ever. It was the year of the underdogs. Not just South Korea but Turkey clinching 3rd in just their 2 world cup ever. USA made the quarters before barely losing to Germany. Senegal's first ever world cup and made the quarters. Ireland just losing to Spain in penalties in the knockout. And then the finals while not an underdog featured the two greatest nations Brazil and Germany playing for the very first time ever. Brazil had Ronaldo the greatest striker in the world vs Germanys Oliver Khan the greatest goalkeeper in the world at the time.
In a way, it was interesting to get so many underdogs going but I think that the quality of the games and teams was just low to be honest. Is it possible that this the first WC you watched? Because in my case, it was first 94, where the amount of surprises was still a lot + there were so many crazy games. Then in 98 there were lots of action-packed encounters with their stories and dramas. After these two WCs 2002 felt somewhat dry and boring despite the progress of the underdogs. There were few engaging groups dramas and perhaps two/three interesting elimination games, much of which finished 0:0 or 1:0... This is my personal opinion.
2002 was a weird one as Korea seemed to bribe the referee to eliminate Italy and Spain to reach semifinal where Korea should have been eliminated in the Italy match. Also Germany v USA match also had some questionable referee decision to make Germany advance to semifinal which the USA should probably have.
The defeat of the undefeated Hungarian Golden Team in 1954 to Germany was really weird. They had beated Germany 8 to 3 in the group. This was due to downpour, German team had clogs on their shoes, dodgy refereeing and some questions about the team's cleanness from doping. Biggest upset in football history. Helped bring on 56 revolution in Hungary. Unfortunately, that ended the run. Hungarians haven't risen to that level, the best in the world at that time, since. Although their heroic fight against the death group, Portugal, France, and Germany, gives hope that the long drought of Hungarian football may be coming to an end.
2002 should be Germany reaching the finals and almost winning. Dude, we had the worst team back in 2002 and only thanks to the TItan himself, Oliver Kahn, did we manage to get this far. That's quite a surprise: A goalkeeper ensures the victory of an entire nation for 6 matches, not because he scores, but because he saves every ball that is threatening his goal. For me, the biggest surprise in the 2002 WC.
It might have been a shock to Germans, but not to the rest of the world. We always expect Germany to reach at least the semis. You guys have really set an insane standard. I couldn’t believe it when Germany was knocked out in the first round in 2018.
In 1994 the biggest surprise was actually Bulgaria. With cult matches against Argentina in the Group Stage, 2:0; Mexico in the Round of 16, 1:1 after extra time with 1 man down and then winning the penalties with the goalkeeper saving 3 penalties; Germany in the quarterfinals, 2:1, turning the tables from 0:1 earlier; and Italy in the semifinals, 1:2, having lost in a game with controversial refereeing, Bulgaria, as a complete underdog initially and who lost their opening game against Nigeria with 0:3, eventually made the biggest surprise on the tournament.
I still honestly feel like i dreamed the Brazil-Germany game. The sight of the scoreboard graphic on Univision having to freaking scroll to show all of Germany's goals at FT is burnt into my brain forever.
0:15 A pic worth 1000 words: 3 Uruguay heroes: The guy that assisted them getting back in the game (Fucile was fouled resulting in Forlan's free kick), the guy that kept them in the game (Suarez) and the guy that won the game (Abreu).
As a half-danish, half-russian guy with a lot of english associates, I have never quite forgiven Croatia for their 2018 run, lmao All my favorites barely got kicked out by penalties and prolonged gametime.
Maybe the biggest surprise was that Diego Maradona was given a goal in a World Cup by scoring with his hand. There have been a lot of surprises in the 21 world championships in the men's game. I hope you cover the women's World Cup's even though there has only been 8 world championships for the women, it is cool to see both the men and women's world titles in the sport. Qatar 2022 may bring new surprises as well for sure.
japan’s outstanding performance against belgium or croatia reaching the final is honestly more surprising in 2018, previous world cup winners crashing in the group stages at the following world cup isn’t a surprise anymore
Possible surprises in this WC 2022: 1) Qatar getting out of their group (they play at home, have an easy group and might get help from the referee). 2) France not qualifying for the knockout stage (they miss many good players due to injury, they have had a lot of bad results leading up to the WC and the defending champions rarely perform well in the following WC) 3) Brazil not qualifying for the knockout stage (this one is the least likely, but they have landed in the most difficult group and are yet to prove how strong they are against strong European teams. If they do not get a win in the first game they be under a lot of pressure since they are the favourites to win the WC, where the other teams can play lay freely without any real pressure when they play against Brazil) 4) Surprise teams: Denmark, Portugal and Serbia.
This is the curse of eliminating Hungary in a major tournament. In Euro 2016, Belgium eliminated Hungary in round of 16 then was eliminated by Wales in quarterfinal. In Euro 2020, France, Germany and Portugal eliminated Hungary in the group stage, then all three teams were eliminated in the very next round.
Costa Rica in 2014 won the group defeating Uruguay and Italy and drawing against England. Then they tied with Greece and Netherlands with different luck in the penalties. So they went undefeated having faced 4 big teams in 5 games!
So, in 94 Saudi Arabia was a bigger surprise than Bulgaria knocking out the world champs Germany, and getting to the semis? Bulgaria were seeded 31st out of 32 teams in the WC, and had never won a game at a WC, but the Saudis reaching the round of 16, is somehow more surprising

I thought the "Hand of God" was quite shocking thb...
@Márton Bálint nah I find it pretty mad
These are surprising outcomes, not shocking events.
So they just skipped the suarez moment in 2010...wtf 😂
That PoS doesn't even deserve the recognition for that. It was an injustice to an entire continent and for that combined with everything else he's done, he shouldn't even be ever allowed to play in any tournaments again.

2:22 Yes please make Italy's controversies under Mussolini regarding their enormously generous treatment at the 1934 World Cup into another video. I can remember commenting this idea several months ago.
If I'm not wrong, Mussolini forced a Uruguayan player to declare for Italy?
@@3dsaulgoodman43 I do recall a Uruguayan player by the name of Michele Andreolo playing for Italy but it was at the following World Cup in 1938. International representation was much more lenient and a bit of a sham in those days.

This is what I love from the World Cup, the stories behind every one of them
I sometimes go back and watch De Jong's kick into Xabi's chest and think to myself: If a blind man can be the main referee of a World Cup final, I can achieve anything in life!

Croatia comfortably beaten in 2018 final ? Croatia had more possession, more shots and more shots on target......they just didn't have the referee on their side with him gifting France with a two goal head start.

This is by far my favourite video of yours Sevens.
No mention for Bulgaria in 1994?
It deserves!!!
Croatia reaching the semis in 1998 was a real upset, espcially the 3-0 against European champions Germany. I would choose that moment above the merely unlucky exit of Spain any day
Well researched video mate
The biggest shock of 1978 was that Scotland qualified.
Great video. Much respect for mentioning Peru in the 1970 and 1978🇵🇪
14:47 ah, aged like fine wine
True
I'd say 2018 was Russia going from abysmal pre tournament run of losses to beating Spain in 1/8 and almost making it to the semifinal against Croatia
russia vs croatia was in quarter finals
And not as a result of weird refereeing decisions either.
This is the good stuff!😍💪🔥 Love world cup videos✌️🎉

In more recent tournaments, you seem to have a strong preference for small, non-European nations unexpectedly winning a single match against a strong European side. But those tournaments really had bigger surprises.
1986: Belgium reaching the semifinals
1994: Bulgaria reaching the semifinals
1998: Croatia reaching the semifinals
2002: Turkey reaching the semifinals

as a Romanian I am obviously sad that we lost to Cameroon but in all other games I have rooted for the African team. They've had a really good and spectacular team, and I honestly wouldn't have minded them winning the WC. They've been so unlucky against England....

Croatia in final is bigest suprise of world cup 2018
What about the most iconic moment of each tournament ?
I've always found it amazing that Turkey reached the 2002 semi-finals and haven't appeared in another World Cup since.
Weren't they in the 2010 World Cup? Or maybe it was a Euro Cup that I'm thinking of (where one team scored in like the 119th minute and then Turkey scored after the 120th minute and went on to win the penalty shootout).
@@markymark443 that was Euro 2008 quarter-finals vs. Croatia, epic finish!
Loved it. Great job
Great vid alfie keep it up
In 2014 Algeria almost got their revenge against Germany when they pushed the future world champions into extra time.
Can you create a video on "players that were linked to big clubs from 5 seasons ago and where they ended up today"
Love the long videos. Players signed because of their world cup performances! #James Rodriguez comes to mind
Biggest surprise from every Euros ( 1960-2016 )
How is it not a shock that Bulgaria beat the defending champions Germany in WC 1994?
And argentina to boot
Ireland beating Italy in 94 and beating England and reaching quarter final in 90
England v Ireland in Italia 90 was 1-1 Gary Lineker scored for England & Kevin Sheedy scored for Ireland.
The 7-1 again ;-;
Oh boy, that was something I just won't forget 🇧🇷😔✊
Was surprised you didn't mention Italy beating Brazil at the 1982 world cup
In 2026, the host nation USA will make it to the semi-finals for the second time and they will become the first CONCACAF nation to win the World Cup.
Instead, this is the sixth time Brazil wins the world cup. This is also the first time the USA reaches the world cup final.

Not sur Argentina may have reached the 2014 wc final but everybody already knew(somehow) that they were going to be shit in 2018
Its a very good video overall but I think you missed Suarez's handball and then the missed penalty by Asmoah gyan
Good. Suarez doesn't even deserve the recognition or attention.
I still honestly feel like i dreamed the Brazil-Germany game. The sight of the scoreboard graphic on Univision having to freaking scroll to show all of Germany's goals at FT is burnt into my brain forever.
Only a team like Germany would continue playing after scoring 4 goals. Most other teams be like wtf for. For germans its work to be done
0:15 A pic worth 1000 words: 3 Uruguay heroes: The guy that assisted them getting back in the game (Fucile was fouled resulting in Forlan's free kick), the guy that kept them in the game (Suarez) and the guy that won the game (Abreu).
As a half-danish, half-russian guy with a lot of english associates, I have never quite forgiven Croatia for their 2018 run, lmao
All my favorites barely got kicked out by penalties and prolonged gametime.
I was there and can confirm that these were all indeed very surprising!
Great videos - but you need subtitles
japan’s outstanding performance against belgium or croatia reaching the final is honestly more surprising in 2018, previous world cup winners crashing in the group stages at the following world cup isn’t a surprise anymore
Yeah I never cheer for Belgium anymore because it feels like they robbed Japan of their first quarterfinals appearance that time in 2018...
How about a documentary on 21st century football without transfers or just football without transfers
9:42 a small error, West Germany did lose 1:0 against East Germany, not 2:1, with Jürgen Sparwasser scoring the only goal.
Unpopular opinion: the vuvuzelas made the 2010 World Cup iconic
Possible surprises in this WC 2022:
1) Qatar getting out of their group (they play at home, have an easy group and might get help from the referee).
2) France not qualifying for the knockout stage (they miss many good players due to injury, they have had a lot of bad results leading up to the WC and the defending champions rarely perform well in the following WC)
3) Brazil not qualifying for the knockout stage (this one is the least likely, but they have landed in the most difficult group and are yet to prove how strong they are against strong European teams. If they do not get a win in the first game they be under a lot of pressure since they are the favourites to win the WC, where the other teams can play lay freely without any real pressure when they play against Brazil)
4) Surprise teams: Denmark, Portugal and Serbia.
Everything of this went to be false,
lol
The reigning champions being sent home after the Group Stage has become a tradition by now.
You should’ve mentioned Bulgaria’a golden generation reaching the semis in ‘94
Heeey, France back on the list at Euros 20(21) for exiting in the 1st knockout round after being up 3-1 against Schwitzerland
Yess lets go switzerland
