Friends-to-lovers is my absolute favorite romance trope! (and the only trope I can most relate to) Although funnily enough I rarely read actual books with it, I usually read friends-to-lovers fanfic (mostly b/c it's very easy to filter trope/theme tags on AO3 to match my particular mood). Dani Brown is absolute top tier romance, and the only book on this list I've read, but I might check out some others.
The closest I've got to a friends to lovers trope that I enjoyed is Sweethand by N.G. Peltier. They run both in the same circles and have some frienships overlap but never spent much time together.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE me friends-to-lovers. It's ironic that 2 of my favorite ships of all time are enemies-to-lovers but I just love friends-to-lovers. Especially if they're friends that they've known each other since they were kids and later grow feelings. I eat it up everytime. So far the books that did the friends-to-lovers trope well are: People We Meet on Vacation Lady Midnight aka the Dark Artices series The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue
I‘ve bought People on Vacation solely based on your glowing review, so I can‘t wait to read it soon! 🥰 also if you want an m/m childhood best friends to losing contact to rekindled friendship as adults to lovers (highly specific, I know hh), then you should check out Him by Elle Kennedy. It‘s one of the most iconic m/m romances, in my opinion, I‘d highly recommend ☺️

This next one is a Falling For My Best Friends Sibling trope but I'm including it because they were friends too by extension and it was done better than the Runner Up previously mentioned--- Birthday Shot Rilzy Adams.

Other examples of this trope that I've loved > Wanna Bet? 😍(now called The Roommate Risk), Wrapped Up in You (all IR) and Guarding Temptation (Black Love) by Talia Hibbert. > Wolfsong😍, Ravensong (kind of F2L2Enemies2L again!) and Heartsong, the first three books (different couples) in the Green Creek MM werewolf series by another fav of mine, TJ Klune. He is a master too and has a large backlist to delve into. > The Friend Contract by Dria Anderson, the first in a sexy and low angst black love shifter novella duology. > A Fake Girlfriend for Chinese New Year and A Big Surprise for Valentine's Day (this one also has a pretty alpha female which I love too) books 3 & 4 of Jakie Lau's Holidays with the Wongs novella series - HILARIOUS romcoms with meddling Chinese Canadian grandparents! > Hate to Want You and Wrong to Need You, books 1 & 2 of the Forbidden Hearts trilogy by Alisha Rai. A lot of people don't like this trilogy but the first two books are fantastic with book 2 being a 5 star for me. Contemporary, family dynamics, IR with two Asian characters. > Josh and Hazel's Guide to Not Dating by Christina Lauren (the only one of theirs that I've read). Loved this IR romcom apart from the ending. > Go Deep by Rilzey Adams. Black Love novella, cute and sexy AF. > A Love Letter to Whiskey by Kandi Steiner. Another angsty AF one and a bit on the taboo side as he was her BFF's man originally... I could go on!!! TFS :)
🌸 radiance by grace draven is one of my favorite friends to lovers which I believe I read on your recommendation. Also just a heartbeat away by Cara bastone is slow burn friends to lovers with an age gap and is verrry good
Great reviews! Unfortunately, an Amazon reviewer has said Queen Move has too much stereotypical misrepresentation of the Asian character. (I am South East Asian). I quote: " I absolutely respect Ms. Ryan as a storyteller, but couldn't finish this book due to the typecasting of the Asian character and culture. I really appreciate the effort to tell multicultural stories, but when it leads to misrepresentation it can do more harm than good. Some errors I caught: 1) The "Vietnamese" character is named "Aiko," a combination of letters doesn't even exist in the Vietnamese language, a name that's more Japanese than Vietnamese; 2) She who wears a kimono--a garment of Japanese origin; 3) A Vietnamese speaker would never answer the phone saying "xin chao co." I stopped reading at that point because the stereotypes and errors were incredibly frustrating, but what happens next...does the free-spirited Buddhist morph into a villainous dragon lady? There is so much potential here to tell an authentic, inclusive story--and maybe that happened elsewhere in this book--but it's too bad Asians were stereotyped and misrepresented, especially in this day and age where we need thoughtful and well-researched narratives to help bridge divides"
I did notice that as well, i think aiko’s character is poorly characterized as well in addition to these misrepresentations so thank you and that reviewer for bringing it up!
