I heard he live twice. She was fantastic. Something that surprised me was that recordings really never captured how sumptuous her high notes were. They had an amazing power.

That's right, I was always disappointed in the sound Decca captured. Her greater risk-taking live was more exciting than her carefully controlled studio work.

I never sang with Dame Joan (I was in high school when she retired) but I have sung with singers who sang with her. They echo your sentiments about her....kind, humble, easy to work with and almost unaware of the superhuman powers that she possessed.

    • @robertmwoodley1502
      @robertmwoodley1502 ปีที่แล้ว

Yes even after a gruelling night onstage she would stop for all her fans, chat and sign programs or libretti. She always smiled and called us "dear" and we adored her, some people having queued all night for tickets.

Absolutely fantastic voice. Even though I'm a huge Mari Callas fan, I can not in good conscience not give Joan Sutherland the praise she deserves. Such magnificent performance, liquid-like vocals.

I saw Joan many times in Sydney and Melbourne, even in her later career when the roles were probably transposed down, and never have I seen anything as exciting as when Richard would whip the orchestra and chorus to the finale, look up at Joan, the universe would stop (you can hear it on all these recordings), Joan would lean back on one leg and the high note would fill the theatre and you would weep and your hair would stand on end and your skin would prickle hot and cold!

How fortunate you were my friend. I was 9 year's old in 1960.And I was born & raised in South Western USA. But I can deeply appreciate That the top three Divas of the golden era were great in different decades & they tend to overlap to the previous artist after their prime. CALLAS reign supreme in the late forties and early fifties. Sutherland own the sixties. Caballe late sixties on the 70s. Each great diva at their. own time. Callas will always reign supreme. That's really not debatable. Sad to say now we have no one like those three great Divas. Leontyne price will always be the exception because of her unique exceptional voice so much color the greatest voice to come out of America. The only Soprano I would go see today is Hernandez. Take care of my friend. Sincerely Arnold Bourbon Amaral 69 years young & holding

I heard her very first perfomances of Norma, Lucrezia Borgia, Merry Widow and Roi de Lahore, as well as 3 Lucias and a concert with Bel Raggio, Hamlet Mad Scene and The Soldier Tir'd. The recordings don't do full justice to her sound in a big opera house. I remember particularly how in the Lucia sextet with 5 other soloists, chorus and orchestra her voice soared above them all. There will never be another even close to her for technical perfection.and astonishing high notes!

Very amusing story, thank you. Klemperer was indeed one of the giants of conducting. I was lucky enough to hear many of his concerts (and attend several rehearsals) with the Philharmonia in 1958/59 while studying at the Royal Academy of Music. His Beethoven cycle was amazing, plus also together with Claudio Arrau performing all 5 of the piano concertos. And his recording of Fidelio with Christa Ludwig is still the gold standard of that opera.

@CaptFitzbattleaxe Hallstein is still very much alive today and still involved with singing competitions (as a judge) and giving master classes. She did not become a world household name because she sang mainly in Germany, Austria and other continental European countries and didn't indulge in PR promotions because she was not too keen on travelling etc.She is more a musician's musician rather than popular superstar!! In Germany and Austria though, she is regarded as a mega coloratura superstar.

Sutherland took an enormous E flat in her first studio's Pollione/Norma duet and in a live 1963 performance.
Search TH-cam for those Eb6 by using the following words...

    • @johnpickford4222

Battleaxe, your point exactly is what? Yul Brynner gave more performances in THE KING AND I than Gertrude Lawrence BECAUSE SHE DIED 18 months into the original Broadway Run. Joan Sutherland was only 3 years younger than Maria Callas so the Callas career should have continued if she took better care of her voice, mind and heart. She was not as disciplined as Joan Sutherland to record her iconic roles of Lady Macbeth, Anna Belen’s or better recordings of La Sonnambula, Medea or La Traviata. So many wasted opportunities while Joan Sutherland had in balance a better life and career. And I saw her last 3 Norma’s in Detroit: They were great!!!

As you seem to like Klemperer,I thought you might like an anecdote
He always had his own cabin(naturally) when travelling around Europe by train. One evening his secretary came into his compartment and saw that his cigarette had caught alight to the score he was reading. He was absent minded..She grabbed his water glass and threw the water over the burning score.
    This did not help
It contained the secret vodka that Klemperer drank.
One arm/hand was quite badly burned.
    Motto Never keep secrets

Maria callas had a louder and fuller high e flat and high e natural as proven all over youtube... beautiful notes don't equal best singer sorry to tell u... and a hell of a lot more ppl would given there foot to see maria Callas in the 70s and 80s If she were still alive and performing then ...shoot... I would still kill for a chance to hear her live ....this is why ALL sopranos are compared to her...not joan... maria callas will always be considered the best soprano of all time! Unfortunately that even means people with bad musical taste ;-) not trying to be offensive...just keeping it real!

@KathrynARyder Check out the G6 sang by Ingeborg Hallstein in the Lakme bell song and also her A6 from Il Bacio. Her Proch variations are also fabuloous and so is her "Caro Nome". The most thrilling and melodic high notes you could wish for. And her recording of Seraglio is amazing too. She may not be the household name that Sutherland was because she sang mostly in Germany and continental Europe but she was a great favourite of Otto Klemperer's and I wouldn't discount his opinion.

@CaptFitzbattleaxe I get goosebumps at your description alone but, not to be catty, it should have been the other way around: "Only Dame Joan could compete with La Divinia… -- no one." ;-) I don't understand half of what she's saying but, my goodness, the voice is, well, awesome in the true sense of the word.

Sutherland's voice was equal throughout the registers, so her high E-flats were as powerful as her middle voice. Most other singers get very thin and shrill at the top. Edita Grubworm is a case in point. Let's stop all the silliness. Callas and Sutherland were the ne plus ultra of this repertoire. All the others, including the disgraceful Beverly Sills, are Mini-Mice.

The 64 Norma I believe to be the all time best live or studio
When I first heard it I thought it sounded as if the record was skipping
it retained the full force dead center for a real long time. What a note!

Just a question from an amateur....who was great in her day, or since, at hitting that note and transitioning? I'm not trying to be a jerk, she's amazing....just want to know if there has been someone else....I listen to opera all the time on here, and I haven't heard notes like that, even from the few Callas videos...

+Soren Aleksander No one since has been able to produce a sound quite like this....certainly not with the size of voice she possessed. Even in a large house like the Met, it was, like Nilsson's voice simply riveting. I doubt we will hear anyone of this caliber for a while.

Those high notes were unique, almost manufactured. It seems like she had discovered a vocal register than no one else had ever found. She always said those notes felt like they were coming out of her head. Callas's highest notes were more a part of her voice, and especially in her fat days, she had easier access to them. Volume-wise, I think they were even bigger, or at least that's how they sound when she blasts everyone else off the stage in the 1951 Aida in Mexico, where she drowns out even the orchestra and the chorus. What we can be sure of is that we are not going to see the likes of these ladies in our lifetimes.

***** Sutherland always said that the highest notes resonated as if they were actually coming out of the back of her head. She once talked about doing a recording, and after hitting one of those high notes, a chorister behind her said, "When you hit those notes, it sounds like you're singing backwards." The sound suddenly projected back toward the chorus behind her rather than forward. It really was a freak and unique register. She almost always had to prep for the note, as if she had to push a button to make it pop out. In her heavier prime, Callas's high notes were more tied to the rest of her voice and came more easily and were more of an extension of her upper register than an extra, unique register. She could sing the note fortissimo, and she could sing the note piano, as critics reported. And even as late as 1957, she could do an exquisite diminuendo from fortissimo to pianissimo on the high E-flat, which was unique in the history of the gramophone. Overall, I don't think there has been anyone to rival these two great ladies in their prime. Sutherland's technical feats were incredible, and she was more dramatic than people tend to give her credit for. Callas's musical genius was unique, and her technical mastery was no less polished than Sutherland's, and it was often so completely molded into the musical and artistic fabric of what she did, one didn't even realized that she just pulled off a near impossible technical feat. If only we had anyone comparable to these ladies on stage today!!

Most people don't remember that Callas' big career was barely 11 years! Sutherland's big career lasted over 30 years and she was only 4 years younger than Maria. I love Maria, but her career was very short.

Re- Christie Heatherton's comment: "What unbelievable hubris and ignorance, coupled in one sentence. Tradition had ALREADY had numerous sopranos singing those stratospheric high notes, for over 100 years. Dame Joan merely respected and upheld that tradition. Far better than many, imho. Just curious- are you a soprano with a truncated top? Just saying'..."

Luckily she had the high notes, because for the medium and low register, you didn't hear her.
