From Wikipedia: On May 21, 2003, Aiken came in a close second to Ruben Studdard, who won the contest by 134,000 votes out of more than 24,000,000 votes cast. The result was controversial, as some hypothesized that Idol's voting system was incapable of handling the number of attempted calls. In an interview prior to the start of the fifth season of American Idol, Executive Producer Nigel Lythgoe revealed for the first time that Aiken had led the fan voting every week from the Wild Card week to the finale, when the possibly-random voting result gave Studdard the win.
Despite what Simon said..Clay was NEVER in trouble!! I think Clay was the best singer that Idol ever had..and Clay was the winner..as far as I'm concerned!!
I totally agree. He was never in trouble, Simon was trying to hold him down because he didin't want him to win. I so hated Simon that season. Clay Aiken blows everyone else away who was ever on Idol...period, end of story.
@@hart3254 well to be fair to Simon, Clay’s first song that night was Vincent and it was pretty terrible, he even forgot the words. But this and his 3rd performance were great so he was in no danger afterwards. Kim’s first song of that night was Band if Gold her signature song and the week before she did pretty well as well.
I have never seen anyone that can belt out a note and hold it for so long. He will always be the King and true winner of Idol. He makes the rest look like kareoke singers.
Simon Cowell has said in an interview that Mack the Knife is one of his absolute favorite songs, so I would of been scared to sing this song in front of him. Clay did an awesome job.
This is still the best version ever, including better than Clay's album-recorded version. Too bad the full song does not exist anywhere, sung by him in this venue.
probably not. bobby knew he was better than everyone else. and clay can obviously sing really freaking well but this song calls for the personality that bobby gave it. p.s. i'm obsessed with bobby darin
ok so a) Randy lost a lot of weight over the years, that's great. and b) I forgot how karaoke Idol was and that's why i didn't watch it again until Adam appeared. I'm just discovering Clay. What a voice.
You know what, Mr. Smartie, it's an American classic, as well. It was made popular by Mr. Bobby Darin on December 19, 1958. It was an instant hit and earned Bobby a Grammy award for record of the year. It's not nice to be a smug smart ass. It comes back to bite you in the backside.
Not that my opinion matters in the grand scheme of things, but that is the ONLY time I have enjoyed that song. I never did like that song, but he did a fantastic job. He should have won American Idol that year.
What does Jackson have to do with anything? That song was done by Bobby Darin and Aiken did a good job. He is sort of a crooner because his voice is soooo good. What's wrong with Manilow. He is a good singer of pop, so what.
Good but not enough bite to it. Darin gave a dangerous/playful vibe when he sang it which gave it its edge and really worked because of the off kilter lyrics in contrast to the vibe of the song. This is a good vocal but I felt no connection to the song by Clay. Clay does a lot better with this song in his 2010 album: th-cam.com/video/S89NNXmyeO4/w-d-xo.html You can just hear how much better his phrasing is, how he takes his time with each note and plays with the song. In idol there were some songs where Clay just seemed like a pro but there are others like this one, where his inexperience is evident.
What a great talent!!!! 3:13 3:13
Clay is always the best

Absolutely amazing singer and he should have won.
Best voice on idol ever and the judges knew it
His voice is the best. I could listen to his singing forever.

Definitely towered above everyone, maybe a tie with Adam Lambert.

Agree 100%!
nigel lythgoe later revealed that clay had the highest vote count from wildcard week to the top 3 week
His pipes are without equal.

❤, I am a big fan of Clay Akin
Nobody can hold a note as long as Clay, and to think he had a collapsed lung as an infant!
Right??!! It's truly incredible the amount of lung power that Clay has!! Amazing!!
Clay held that note to the bitter end Awsome❤
This guy is amazing!!!!
He is great and fantastic singer. He can sing anything. He is so cool.

Too bad the full song does not exist anywhere, sung by him in this venue.

AND it was popular well into the sixties.
He is far from a lounge singer. To me he's awesome.
nailed it!!
0:04 I thought this was a family show!!!
SO MANY WOMEN & HE'S GAY....😵😵😵😵😵. IM STILL MADLY IN LOVE WITH HIS BEAUTIFUL SELF. !!!!!
It is, but doing it right, the way its supposed to be done changes everything
A preview, perhaps?
This homosexual man has more swag than most gay ass niccas. Clay baby🥰🤩😍
I think he was the best too. Listen to solitaire, how he can hold the note so long. Plus he seems like a nice person
Not that my opinion matters in the grand scheme of things, but that is the ONLY time I have enjoyed that song. I never did like that song, but he did a fantastic job. He should have won American Idol that year.
that was a good 1 rfom ryan in the beginning.lol

They push who they want to win, they pushed Ruben from the start they had plan to push Hip Hop with Ruben he would not do it.
What does Jackson have to do with anything? That song was done by Bobby Darin and Aiken did a good job. He is sort of a crooner because his voice is soooo good. What's wrong with Manilow. He is a good singer of pop, so what.
You know what... it was a German classic its an American remake.. Ms knowitall.
"Not as hard as I thought it would be."
Simon didn't like clay very much

Simon was wright he pulled it out ahead when he sang Mack the Knife on AI but not his new version on his CD, it's kind of boring for me
that was a lot of jackson to get up.lol
I always hated this song
bobby darin did it best, imo.
