Then " all the boys there at the bar began to sing along" meaning ...... they all "knew her". Dixie Chicken was a pet name she had for her clients. Yes the Commodore Hotel is historic in Memphis Great song choice, so glad you liked it.
Little Feat (especially Lowell George) are so underrated. IMO 'Waiting for Columbus' is one of the best live albums ever recorded. Try 'Fat Man in the Bathtub'.
@@realcoyotekings Very true. From all sorts of rock genres, too. Little Feat was Zeppelin's favorite band, for example, back in 1975. They played Feat albums all through their '75 tour, between gigs...Saw LIttle Feat a couple times before Lowell signed off, way too soon. Great shows. Remember them still.
Little Feat was very popular in the Baltimore / Washington area. They lived just north of Baltimore when Lowell wrote, "Feats Don't Fail Me Now." The band was close to breaking up, hence, the title. When they went on tour they always started in DC or Balto. and ended in the other city. The Waiting for Columbus tour started at the Warner Theater in DC and went around the world for about a year. The album was out before the tour ended. Of course, it ended in Baltimore and myself, along with many friends, were able to get tickets. Packed house and saw a live show that we had been listening to for months. UN - FREAKIN - BELIEVABLE ! It's hard to believe it was almost 50 years ago. I guess I'm getting old.
Bonnie Raitt is a world class guitarist too. She is the original artist on the song I Can't Make You Love Me and her own special style, bluesy country pop all blended, a bit of a female version of Chris Stapleton. Emmylou is also a legend in music herself. They were there to have fun not because they weren't opening acts themselves.
Little Feat are one of the most underrated bands of all time. Others have said it, but their live album Waiting for Columbus is truly one of the greatest live albums of all time.
I first heard Little Feat when I was in high school when they first came out due to my older brothe (mid 70's). I got to see them live in 1979 just a few months before Lowell George died so prematurely (the frontman and center of the band). What an experience! Little Feat carried on after his death very consitently due to the brilliance of the former bands musicians, specifically Richie Hayward, Roy Estrada, and Paul Barrere especially (check out "Let it Roll" and "Introducing the Mambo". Lowell would have been proud of his band mates.
Check out some of Bonnie Raitt like I CAN"T MAKE YOU LOVE ME/ LET"S GIVE EM SOMETHING TO TALK ABOUT. And Emmylou Harris has one of the sweetest, hauntingly beautiful voices ever.
That was awesome! They were so good at incorporating many different styles in their music. Jimmy Page from Led Zeppelin said Little Feat was his favorite American band in a 1975 interview.
You had some REAL legends on stage there. Bonnie, Emmy Lou and Lowell George! Do yourself a favor and check out Bonnie and Emmy Lou as solo artists and remember all of their faces because you WILL see them again...with just about every big name artist you can think of....rock, blues AND country!
Great choice! Bitter sweet for me. I saw Little Feat a couple of times in Santa Barbara and remember that Lowell was wearing those white overalls the final time. I attended the Tribute concert for Lowell not long after this show at the Forum in LA. Bonnie, EmmyLou, Linda Ronstadt, Jackson Browne, members of the Flying Burrito Brothers and several others that I can’t remember right now performed. Lowell was a musician’s musician.
One thing you might have noticed was that EmmyLou's and Bonnie's mic didn't seem to be working. But it hardly mattered. Lead singer Lowell George has such a distinctive voice and although Little Feat carries on to this day, they were at their best with him out front. "Spanish Moon" is another gritty, funky favorite. They also put out one of the best live albums of all time, "Waiting for Columbus."
A fun, skilled band. Full, rich, layered sound, kind of a New Orleans flavor. You know if you're a great band if you can get Emmylou Harris and Bonnie Raitt to jam with you!
Little Feat were one of the best, most underrated groups of the 70's. Lowell George had been in Frank Zappa's band until Zappa eventually pretty much forced him to make his own band because he loved the draft for the song Willin' but knew it wouldn't fit for Zappa's group. Fat Man In The Bathtub is such a banger of a song from them. The aforementioned Willin' also. And Sailing Shoes.
Gotta' have yo' propa' "stank face" on to listen to these guys, and for this particular evening, gals, all of whom are legends in their own right. What a band they were! There were slide players before and after Duane Allman who brought it to our attention in his own incredible way. Most people would probably say Duane was king, But Duane's influence was Jesse Ed Davis who was with Taj Mahal and where the Allman's got Statesboro blues, tho Blind Willie McTell actually wrote it. All that to say this, Lowell George, guitarist here, was also a great slide man and had a distinct style all his own. Most slide players were copying Duane, but Lowell was not a clone. He was the real deal also not to mention he sounded like himself, unlike most others! But heck, you could put any of the three on the player and I'd sit and listen! I'd love to hear all three of them jam, but alas, they have all left the building.
@brittreacts Always loved this song! A Dixie Chicken is another name for a Gentleman Provider. (Basically a Southern Sugar Daddy). The Tennessee Lamb & The Dixie Chicken are both names of nightclubs as well as recipes. So I think it's a clever play on words? Turned out she had a lot of "Dixie chickens" 😆
Yes- just as you said- Little Feat is funky and groovy- and while this is a stellar performance by Lowel George and the band, to have the future legends- Bonnie Rait and Emmy Lou Harris on stage as backup singers, yet, their mic isn’t turned on … is a sin! I would’ve loved to hear them. Either way- their live album, Waiting for Columbus is mind blowing- every songs great!
Lowell George is my favorite slide guitar player of all time. His singing and songwriting were just as excellent. The band Little Feat is extremely talented on all levels. Back then, Bonnie Raitt on backing vocals has become an excellent guitar/slide player herself. Without question, Lowell was a huge influence on her.
Lowell George (singer & leader of the band) died June 29, 1979 - I had tickets to see his solo band in NYC 3 days later. They lasted many years after but Feat were never the same.
Your hair down like that looks good. Lowell George, Little Feat's guitarist, was a great...this album from LF is really a strong one. Dang - the girls are not turned up loud enough on backups...great voices!!!
Britt... nice choice. I always loved Little Feat since Lowell was an ex Mothers of Invention member (Roy Estrada too) and the Mothers were a favorite of mine. I got to see Lowell live once.
Little Feat frontman Lowell George wrote this song with Martin Kibbee, who is credited as "Fred Martin." The pair were in a band together before Little Feat formed. Kibbee wrote the lyric, which was sparked when he drove past a sign in Los Angeles that said "Dixie Chicken" (apparently advertising a restaurant). He says that by the time he drove home, he had the lyric written in his head.
Great choice, genius runs in the family too Lowell George's daughter Inara records under the group name "The Bird & the Bee" and their "Ray Gun" is one of my very favourite songs of recent times.
To promote this song, the band delivered fried chicken to radio stations with Lowell George in a chicken suit. The boxes read: "Finger Pickin' Good" - a play on the Kentucky Fried Chicken "Finger Lickin' Good" slogan - and had the girl from the album cover in place of Colonel Sanders.
This would be a pretty short live version of this song, for them. Treat yourself to the version from the live album "Waiting For Columbus". Nearly 9 minutes of pure ear candy.
Little Feat's sound was what we used to call Rockabilly - rock/blues from southern white bands. Also Leonard Skinner, The Band and The Allman Bros Band. These days we would call this a rock/soul/blues fusion band. They all had great sounds and many hits. But Bonnie and Emmylou for back up - Whoa!
In 1980 or 1981, I was in a boring college class. It was near the end of the spring semester and I was next to the window, looking out and wishing I was somewhere else when I saw Bonnie Raitt walk past on the Quad! I was freaked out but when I mentioned it to a friend, he said that her brother taught on campus. A brief bit of notoriety for me.
It means that Lowell George and some of the other members of the band were out of money one time and took a job dressing up in chicken costumes and playing on the street. There are lines about it in this song, and in Skin It Back (walkin' around in the shoes of a clown).
Yes, there was a real Commodore Hotel. Bonnie Raitt is a world-class slide guitar player as was Lowell George. Unfortunately, Lowell died young. Little Feat was beloved in the D.C. area, had no idea until later that they weren't everywhere. Listen to "Willin' ", either just Little Feat or with Lowell and Linda Ronstadt.
Bob Harris, the highly revered British DJ and presenter always introduced Little Feat as ‘the best Rock’n’Roll band in the World’, which was somewhat controversial because British fans always used that phrase for the Rolling Stones. However, he was (and still is) right.
Kibbee wrote the lyric, which was sparked when he drove past a sign for a restaurant in Los Angeles that said "Dixie Chicken" He says that by the time he drove home, he had the lyric written in his head.
It's a cute little tongue&cheek joke. I had to listen to this tune a few times before I picked it up. That was a long time ago. I got to see these guys back in 77. They played a great set and "Dixie Chicken" was one of the highlights. This was one of those bands that had no weak links. They were solid. "bad to the bone." Lowell George was a monster talent but surrounded by big time talent as well. Maybe that"s why they were so damn good.
You young people really mist a lot of super music from back in the day. I’m 74 so glad I am in my age group, to witness the best rock an roll of all time. Keep searching there is much more to discover.

Some Saturday mornings, when I'd go in to do some overtime, we'd put on Little Feat Live...a couple of hours of pure dixie bliss. Another Album we used to listen to a lot is Herbie Mann's album featuring Cissy Houston (Whitney's mum) on vocals...a couple of really good tracks are Cajun Moon and Creepin' (a Stevie Wonder song)...you should have a listen, Britt, I think you'd like them
I stopped listening to Little Feat (1969-1979) after Lowell George passed in 1979. Lowell George actually quit the band just before his death as tensions grew within the band over creative differences. They later reformed with Craig Fuller at lead vocals (Co-founder Pure Prairie League), but that Lowell George vocal CANNOT be duplicated in whole! Little Feat made 8 records with Lowell George: Little Feat (1971), Sailin Shoes (1972), Dixie Chicken (1973), Feats Don't Fail Me now (1974), The Last Record Album (1975), Time Loves A Hero (1977), Waiting On Columbus (1978), and Down On The Farm (1979) which was finished up after LG passed (RIP LG). After reforming, many more records were produced (1987-Present). The band fused broad styles of genres, Rock, Jazz, Country, and Blues into a very distinctive sound and produced some notable playlist jams within those first 8 records. Can't speak for the music post 1979. ....... not familiar with it. Some must-listens from the first 8 records: Time Loves A Hero, New Delhi Freight Train, Fat Man In The Bathtub, Spanish Moon, Dixie Chicken, and Willin. Great reaction, TY
Hi Britt! That song is a musical joke--BTW, this live version leaves out a verse--try the version on Waiting For Columbus for more amazement. Anyway, he tells the tail of being seduced and swindled by a temptress singing Dixie Chicken, who cleans him out and disappears. He tells his story to a bartender who claimes he "knew her well", starts singing Dixie Chicken, and all the boys in the bar join in. That's gonna leave a mark! Little Feat has it all--composition, performance, and writing, in an original swamp funk/R&B/Jazz/country jumbo. Thanks for having me along.
Little Feats funkiest album might be the early Feats Dont Fail Me Now album - I would suggest Skin it Back or Spanish Moon. There will be no video of these - just from the album.
Britt one of the cowriters saw the name dixie chicken on a Los Angeles chicken restaurant and it stuck with him. I have to say that whoever was in charge of the sound on this needs to be fired and then arrested. How do you have 2 of the most talented singers around singing back-up and not have them be able to be heard??? Bonnie does look a little like Meryl. You should check out both of those ladies too. EmmyLou is one of the best singers anywhere and Bonnie is a wonderful singer and guitar (and slide guitar) players as well.
Interesting side note; Linda Ronstadt met Lowell George, the lead singer, in Atlanta in the 70’s and fell in love with him….then she found out he was married
The story here is that he met a "pro". A year after she ran away he was in a bar and the bartender started humming the song she sang to the singer. Then " all the boys there at the bar began to sing along" meaning ...... they all "knew her".
Dixie Chicken was a pet name she had for her clients.

Spanish Moon is a must listen. Love Little Feat and was introduced to them though Jimmy Buffett.
LOVE the energy of this song - Little Feat has a great country rock/Honky Tonk band. Lots of different songs to fall into!

Some must-listens from the first 8 records: Time Loves A Hero, New Delhi Freight Train, Fat Man In The Bathtub, Spanish Moon, Dixie Chicken, and Willin. Great reaction, TY
Enjoyed this one-and agree with you about the music. Thanks Britt!
Glad you enjoyed it!
and yes the commodore hotel is a place
One of the best live albums is Waiting for Columbus by Little Feat.......
I will keep that in mind, thanks!
Lowell George used a socket from a Sears Craftsman Socket Set for his slide.
that is so cool!
back then it was all about the music, unlike today where its about units sold.
Heavy on the Zydeco too btw. They had that in their soul.
Little Feats funkiest album might be the early Feats Dont Fail Me Now album - I would suggest Skin it Back or Spanish Moon. There will be no video of these - just from the album.
Hehe it means he wants to be your lover and very sincerely
Nope. No Commodore in Memphis but there is an Ambassador Hotel that Tom Waits was known to frequent at times.
Sweet! you pick good stuff! TY Baby!
Rest In Peace Mr. George
Lowell and Linda Ronstadt doing Willin' is worth a listen.
