  • On Sunday, November 12, 2023, DGS Director Delano Hunter presented a mayoral proclamation on behalf of Mayor Muriel Bowser at the 150th anniversary celebration of Eastern Market. The weekend’s activities included featured merchants and vendors, music, historic walking tours, classes, giant games, a child-friendly scavenger hunt, and more.
“It is an honor to celebrate Eastern Market’s 150th anniversary, especially knowing how that legacy was nearly cut short by a devastating fire that decimated the market’s North Hall in 2007. With DGS, then known as DRES, at the helm, we completed a $22 million restoration to protect the historic North Hall for its next 150 years,” said DGS Director Delano Hunter. “Thank you to Mayor Muriel Bowser, Councilmember Charles Allen, the Eastern Market Community Advisory Committee, Eastern Market Main Street, and Events DC for their unwavering support of Eastern Market, and for this weekend’s fantastic event.”
Eastern Market is the District’s oldest, continually operating, public fresh food market. Located in the heart of the historic Capitol Hill neighborhood, the historic North Hall at Eastern Market is a premier destination for shopping that underwent at $22 million restoration in 2009 by DGS following a devastating fire.
