    Western Mountaineering is the best sleeping bag company on the market, imo. I have the Megalite 30F, Versalite 10F, and Lynx -10F and I have never been cold in any of them. I’ve even taken the 10F down to -4F wind chill with layers and was safe and warm, too. Totally worth the price!

      Totally agree, I’ve taken my Versalite down to 9 degrees, and was fine, with layers. Cheers

    My ascent ii is 800 fp and used in the winter. I also have the BA torchlight ul 30 and love the room in such a high quality bag. Because they both have in effect full length zips they can also be used as quilts. I would rather have the features and comfort over a few grams.

    I’d agree with the 3 and 1, in the military we use a three piece system. A jungle bag, a winter bag and a bivy. It’s heavy and as you said it’s a lot of moving parts.
    Seems great on paper but at the end of the day it’s a lot of moving parts.

  • @0errant
    @0errant ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks for this. I have an older BA Lost Ranger that I love, but it’s heavy at 1.25Kg. I’ve thought about upgrading to the he new 3in1 to save some weight, but after seeing this, it doesn’t look like it will work for me. The Zen Bivy looks comfy, but not enough of a weight savings to justify it for me.

    I still like quilts so much more than sleeping bags, as long as they are extra wide and have side elastics (UGQ Bandit). Even better: a quilt in a hammock (no extra width required in this case).

    Devin, have you ever tried the Nemo Forte 20° Sleeping Bag?
    I'm a side sleeper and it is designed for side sleepers.
    Living in east Texas with wet/cold winters, a synthetic insulated bag is more appropriate.

    I have bought the Western Mountaineering Ultralite, and the quality is top notch, BUT: I wonder about the rough stitching inside the bag, which clearly irritates if you put bare arms and legs in the bag. I really hope that this irritation diminishes significantly as the bag is used - Unpacking/unpacking, washing etc.?

    I would love some inputs on the zenbivy system. I will camp no lower than 41 degree fahrenheit but up go summer nights of max 68 F. Most use I guess will be in the 50 to 55 range. Now I would love to save money and just go for the zenbivy synthetic 30 og light 40 but not sure what would be the smarter choice. Any advice ??

    • @BackcountryExposure
      @BackcountryExposure  ปีที่แล้ว

      I’d honestly probably still recommend the 25° option with the fast sheet. A lot of your warmth is also in your sleeping pad. So with the fast sheet you’ve still got the bed benefits, but no insulation in the hood. And you can open the quilt into whatever configuration you want for the various temperatures you’d be in.

    • @FoyeTroute
      @FoyeTroute ปีที่แล้ว

      I have the Zenbivy 25 (regular version, not the light version) and have used it very comfortably from 30-55 F without and issues. Haven't tried it in warmer temps yet, though I wouldn't hesitate to do so. Super versatile system so far since you don't have to have an enclosed foot box.

    • @BackcountryExposure
      @BackcountryExposure  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Other bags either didn’t make the cut cause I only got 1 or 2 nights with it, like the Nemo Riff. But I also used the Thermarest Ohm, sea to summit Spark, and Big Agnes Torchlight this year.

    Can the zenbivy system be bought without the pad if we already have a pad I'm happy with?

    • @BackcountryExposure

    Great video BUT can you recommend me a bag that works well with a larger person? I am not a fan of quilts but I would like to find a bag that works well for me. For car camping I have a -25 synthetic fill hybrid bag but that is obviously too heavy for backpacking. Basically I am looking for a quality down backpacking sleeping bag that is more of a hybrid shape (I am ok with the extra weight from a hybrid shaped bag). I am not huge but at 6'1 220 with broad shoulders I personally can not do a mummy bag, the constriction is not for me. Thanks!

    Mummy bags don’t make sense if you’re strictly a side sleeper like me. I prefer quilts. My next bag will be a quilt with a zipper for use in colder conditions.

    • @alexl8328
      @alexl8328 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry but I don’t agree… the make sense to me. I’m a 100% side sleeper and prefer mummy bags to quilts. I’ve tried all the top name quilts and after trying a Western Mountaineering Alpinlite I’ll never go to a quilt again. I agree that a traditional narrow mummy bag is not the best but bags like the Alpinlite have a different shape and not claustrophobic for me at all.
