      Not just bigger, but faster too. At the very least they could've used a SSHD. A Blu-Ray drive costs around 60 quid and up, new. Especially considering a 7200rpm and up HD/SSHD upgrade wouldn't leave much of an impact of that 60 quid (at minimum) saving.

    Microsoft dropped a massive ball by not:
    A) Reducing the price to $200; or
    B) Keeping it at $250 but increasing the HDD to 7200 RPM and a minimum of 2TB
    Since they did neither option, they made their own product pointless.

      C) Making it a smaller form factor.
      But I think long term they might just give these away with some kind of Gamepass plan.

    You should also note, they left the headers on for the optical drive. You can actually plug one in. Will it work? No, looks like they've dropped something in the firmware that won't even look at those headers.

    Optical media is one of the only reasons I prefer console gaming, since I can buy cheap used games this way that have no internet based DRM. So it will still work in a couple of years time. Taking away the drive just turns it in another device that can only be used for a few years at best and will eventually be rendered useless. Just look at the Wii Store. Sure, the Wii was old, but refusing access to titles one had previously bought is just unacceptable and something that will repeat itself for any such service.

    • @madness1931
      @madness1931 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If you do end up switching to PC someday, take a look at GOG. You actually own the game, not just a temp licence that can be revoked (at any time), and their's zero DRM. Hell, it's perfectly legal for you to burn a copy of the game and put it on your bookshelf to look at like classic games before the internet age of gaming.

      I don't know how that's going to work " in a couple of years time" because, like I said elsewhere, games are now being released in parts: a great chunk of the game is released on disc while a considerable part of the game is distributed online via patches and game updates... GT6 has 10GB of patches and game updates that rely on Sony queeping their servers up because Sony doesn't officially allow for offline updates.
      If Sony discontinues PSN for PS3, I still don't know how people are going to play their games if their HDD fails and then need to reinstall the game with the updates and there's no PSN...

    Couldn't you just clone the original hard drive using a program like Acronis TrueImage?

    • @avaviel
      @avaviel 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Unfortunately, you can't simply do that. It's been a while, but you also need to format the drive correctly using various Linux tools. I don't know if there are size limitations as well. In previous versions of the Xbox, you needed to buy drives at specific sizes and get firmware that matched. Ie, at the time, you couldn't use a 120gb drive if all Microsoft had released was an 80gb and lower.
      But it's been a few years since I've done an Xbox hard drive upgrade, so things have more than likely changed.

    • @pierreuntel1970
      @pierreuntel1970 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@avaviel I don't see why you can't do that, raw image cloning will resulted in the new disk looks exactly like the old disk, ofc you'll need repartitioning to use extra disk space of the new disk has but it would still boot up just fine, unless they enforce software limit on something like BIOS to only allow a specific disk model/serial

    • @avaviel
      @avaviel 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@pierreuntel1970 That's the popular belief, however, that doesn't always work. There's a new script two format the drive correctly, and an official Microsoft download to copy to it.

      SandPox Not sure about the specifics, but I recall users having bricked their hard drives (using the clone method) when the Xbox One did an update. Not sure how it happened, I didn't go too deep, but I do remember some complaints over the years. It can likely be fixed easily, but I suppose that's not really worth the risk considering you're dealing with people's data.

      @@avaviel it might be a software limitation that it couldn't run a larger drive . I think going from 1TB HDD to 1TB SSD might be possible but I can't say that the firmware would support higher capacities.
