Man you can do it! I look up to all Anesthesiologist and CRNA, it takes a special person to be an anesthesiologist or CRNA! I really enjoy donating to the Anesthesiologist Foundation, since it was hard for me to go to college because of my cerebral palsy
You are human. Anyone who says one day is enough to rest after a crazy long week like yours needs to quite frankly, either shut up or do it themselves and see how they fare. Keep at it, take every bit you can to take care of yourself and know that it does get better. Take care hun!
I just want to say that I know this rotation is extremely difficult, but you’re incredible. Just the fact that you continue to have an optimistic outlook is extremely admirable. On top of working 80 hrs a week, you’re still uploading AND studying! You’re awesome, my friend :) Hang in there, can’t stop the clock- this rotation will pass!!!
I'm an Icu nurse and I dont envy you guys. I work my 3 days a week shift take 6 days off and come back and the same residents are there and haven't had any time off. Oh I couldn't do it.
Two years later and I still feel like im in burnout. Its like my soul KNOWS this is not the way we are meant to live our lives. Feel like I am just a robot that wakes up before the sun comes up, works in a high stress environment all day, leaves when its dark. Eat. shower and repeat x forever. I feel you on one day not being enough to recover, I honestly think I need 6 months..
After watching 5 months of your vlogs I learned that residency is a absolute rollercoaster. You're constantly having ups and downs in work hours and such. We all know you are a great doctor, we need more people like you. Thanks for sharing your experiences. 😊
I have really enjoyed watching your vlogs! I went back and am in the process of watching from the beginning. My daughter just had her first med school interview Thursday! We are very excited for her and hope she gets matched this cycle. She’s 22. Thanks for being real about everything! Gives me a good idea of what she is about to embark on! We think she was born for this! Watching your vlogs, it seems you need to be to get through it!
I know how you feel about working holidays in healthcare. I have been a nurse for 42 years and retired now but have worked every holiday , every shift at one time or another in those 42 years. Honestly i hated the drive to work wishing i was off but after i was there, it was all fine. I wish you the best in your career. You will be great. I love your personality and your caring for people. Happy Birthday to your Momma and hello to your puppies.
thanks for being so honest in your posts! it has really helped me as a premed to see what life will look like one day. i always look forward to these vlogs!
as someone whos been through residency, yes it burns you out but you should have aspirations that keep it from happening. Find something thatll push you everyday to get to your next stage in life whether it be starting a family or buying a house, that should always be what gets you to wake up the next day.
OMG you put so much humor in with your drama that I feel so guilty when I'm laughing. So sorry. You seriously looked so tired. Love how u appreciate the little things in life. Your just so awesome. I pray 🙏 u get some well deserved sleep soon. 😊❤❤❤❤
It's great to know that this phase in your life is temporary. It may not be easy now, but it will make you a knowledgeable medical doctor in the future! Keep up the great work. I look forward to watching your vlogs every week!
Keeping you prayed up so you can make it one day at the time. I have complete faith this too shall come to an end and you will be ready for the next step.
Do not apologize for venting. Consider it therapy! My daughter is an ER nurse and she keeps her work shoes in a bag in her trunk. That way the hospital gunk doesn’t enter her home and she doesn’t worry about wearing the wrong shoes. ❤❤
You were doing the giving on Thanksgiving… hope to patients who are having the worst possible holiday and pride to your mom in having a doctor for a son.
Shaun I love your dogs. You treat them with so much love and caring. It 😮shows you have a big heart .Just to say I live in Napa California…been here all my life. My husband and I really need a change. My son is 37 and I’m so proud of him. He went to UC Santa Barbara got his teaching degree for history teacher. Well decided he didn’t want to do that. I hope this passes for you, and I know you’re going to be a wonderful doctor in the end of it all. Just keep pushing and thank you so much for your HARD WORK. ❤❤❤❤❤❤
I believe in you & ur doing great bro. Love ur videos.Watching your journey is motivating asf even if I'm not in the medical field. You give off super good vibes & seem like a good guy. Just think about that sweet $ at the end of all of this, even if it's not necessarily about money to you.
Thank you, Shaun, for still pushing through and getting these videos out for us 🦅🦅We really appreciate it! and if u ever need a break from the videos, we understand and will happily (and begrudgingly lmao) wait for u 🫂
I think its kind of crazy that residents are only given 1 day off when you are working 12 hour shifts. Its not like we are unaware of the negitive health benifits of lack of sleep and high stress. Its like you are forced to sacrifice your own health to take care of others... it just doesn't have to be that way! Man you are a rock star! If you can get through the next few weeks, you can get through anything!!
When you become anesthesiologist, you will be know "when the surgeon will be not doing surgery". Some surgery can wait( or no surgical treatment needed), like doing surgery in morning or day time, not middle of night. When patient came into emergency department or trauma center in the middle of night. Your colleagues of anesthesiologist could take case of patient who needs surgical treatment during days time when you take nighttime call hours.
I can so relate to this video Shaun even though I'm not in medicine I worked in the I.T. industry and I was literally On Call for 15 years straight. I'd work a regular 8 or 9 hour day and then on my way home I'd get a page and have to race home to log in and fix something. Then I'd get paged at 11pm (right before bed) and be on the laptop for an hour or two then finally fall asleep only to be woken up in the night with another call. Back up again in the morning to start it all over again and for me trying to have a drink or two, going out of town or being too far away from service areas was out of the question in case I had to log in or physically go back into work. This went on around the clock 7 days a week except when I could take a week's holidays but even then they wanted me available and required numbers I could be reached at (I was called at my hotel in Mexico once). I can honestly say I was burned out and completely exhausted and ended up wishing I would break a leg so I could have some time off and wouldn't you know it months later I shattered my ankle and broke my tibia. It did give me a bit of a break but as soon as I was out of surgery and back home the calls started up again even though I was on hydrocodone for the pain. I ended up being fired in 2017 because I just didn't care anymore and it showed and after the initial shock I was glad. I haven't gone back to work and took early retirement and it was the best thing for me. I loved my job but it literally gave me PTSD and I now have a real hatred of the phone I hate it when it rings. But what I do want to say is keep pushing through because you're young, you have a passion for what you are doing and you are going to succeed. Once you reach your goal be sure to set boundaries for yourself and don't let your job take over your life post residency. It's okay to push really hard towards something you want but remember to live a little while doing it. I know you are going to be a great Anesthesiologist and you're going to pass that board exam with flying colors.
Currently an undergrad premed and just started working in a research lab and scribing in ED and I’m already feeling the burnout but know it will be worth it in the end 😂
I think this is one of the few times where we've seen more car footage than any other vlog lol. It's going to suck when you leave Vegas. Like almost a huge life chapter closing.
hey.. just started catching up on your blogs, i know youre not supposed to shot your patients and all that. but i think after attending to a patient you can come out and say i had a patient who came in with this[illness/conditions] and i assessed them like this, it wd be very interesting, unlike how we’re unable to fully catch your work -interested medical student
Did you do USMLE step 1 and 2 heard you said you did 80 questions to practice for step 3, what were your scores and any recommendations, I am still in first year of med school
3 weeks ago- I love my life as a residency doctor- My secret 😏Today- I’m feeling the residency burnout- Burnt out 😢 After the last video I was curious how long it was gonna take for this one to come out lol
Sir can computer engineers in California earn more than anesthesiologists in usa because my elder brother is a PhD graduate computer engineer in California? Please reply. Thanks a lot.
Why do medical schools and residency programs do this? Like what is the underlying reason? If it's a curriculum time crunch issue where you have to have so many hours or patients in, why not just extend the program a few months so students and residents can get some rest and sleep and get the requirements in? Like use some common sense! Nursing is just as screwed up, but on other things...just because it's been done for years a certain way doesn't mean it's right or even ethical. Keep doing these videos Dr. Shaun, so people are aware of the problem. I never knew that doctors had burnout until I started watching you and Dr. Kevin. I thought it was just us nurses. Keep pushing on!
Med school definitely shouldn't do this type of stuff it's counterproductive, you're not getting paid, you're paying to be there and you have exams and boards that they somehow expect you to do well on!
Guys… I’m tired 😢 sorry if I complained a lot in this week’s vlog. Also, make sure to leave a LIKE and COMMENT! It really helps the algorithm and I’d appreciate it so much 🙏🏻❤️

Thank you!!
Hang in there
Trying!
hey.. just started catching up on your blogs, i know youre not supposed to shot your patients and all that. but i think after attending to a patient you can come out and say i had a patient who came in with this[illness/conditions] and i assessed them like this, it wd be very interesting, unlike how we’re unable to fully catch your work
-interested medical student
I love the scruffy hair!
Thank you!!
@ your welcome!
oh yeah that's why I only work 7 days a week for like half of the year and 3 days a week for the rest so it balances out
things in the medical field need to change
Agreed!
Did you do USMLE step 1 and 2 heard you said you did 80 questions to practice for step 3, what were your scores and any recommendations, I am still in first year of med school
Highway to hell as the anthem 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

Hey Shaun not to be bothering you but how many years does it take you to get your medical license
12
what do you study for as a resident?
Board exams but also anything related to our patients
Having worked in a hospital during 2 times in my life, the only thing about working holidays is the load is usually lighter.
true haha no one gets sick on holidays
3 weeks ago- I love my life as a residency doctor- My secret 😏Today- I’m feeling the residency burnout- Burnt out 😢
After the last video I was curious how long it was gonna take for this one to come out lol
It didnt take very long 😂😂
@@ShaunAndersenRespect to how far you made it though. I’m still in my second year prepping for boards and hoping it gets better haha

also i found ur vlogs the other day and they’re seriously so good!!
I’m 28! :) and Ty so much!
Just curious if you know any residents who are moms are how they're doing?
Get your eyes check
I actually really need to
You don't need to keep apologizing for being exhausted and having no downtime. Anybody in your situation would be tired and burnt out.
very true, I appreciate that!
You need to boost your dopamine level -
Agreed!!
@ShaunAndersen what program are you in MD or DO. ??😁
are you leaving medicine like some other youtubers
lol definitely not
Im sure it helps to let it out. Remember it's all in the mind. Like picking up poop in the sun😂😂😂
Very true 😂😂
