      52 year old here who has done similar a 20k + steps per day, started walking during the pandemic, lost about 14Kg, 4 years later I’m still averaging over 22K steps per day, maintaining all the initial weight loss and feeling so much better for it. It’s a lot easier in summer when the weather is better but living in Scotland means putting on the Gore-Tex and a head torch in winter, what is brilliant is learning to appreciate the small changes as the seasons change.

      Genuine question, how do you find the time? I've been going on walks everyday for 2 weeks now and it's great but it does tire me and takes a lot of time out of my day. And i'm not even close to 20k steps a day.

      @ after work/school and during breaks , eat and then walk. I’m still a student so I have a bit more free time walking around campus and having a schedule in which classes and time I take it in. I’m not sure about your line of work but I always have some time left. Maybe wake up earlier and have a walk or a run to speed it up and get more time with a higher intensity. 7 hours of classes + part time + sleep = 20 hours used up in a weekday. I still have time to do it so why can’t you? If you have a habit of watching movies then buy a treadmill and watch it while walking on it. But everyone has enough time if they can use it properly

    I've hiked both the Pacific Crest and Appalachian Trails across the U.S. and therefore have some experience with walking for long distances. This was a fun video to watch! From my experience, weight loss doesn't kick in until a few weeks in, but once it does it's pretty fast. I lost 60 lbs (starting out obese) on the PCT. That being said, many hikers struggle with too much weight loss and end up malnourished. The weight loss is often more dramatic in men than women. I'll usually intentionally put on a few pounds before doing longer hikes. As for appetite, that usually doesn't kick in until 2-3 weeks in, but when it does it's pretty noticeable and is called "hiker hunger". Pain, blisters, and aches (obviously not injuries) tend to die down after about a month. From my experience, Day 3 is always one of the hardest days. Me along with most longer distance hikers prefer trail runners over boots as the stiffness of boots leads to more blisters and our feet grow in size and flatten out. I'm permanently a half shoe size larger (American shoe sizes).

    • @amunak_
      @amunak_ 28 วันที่ผ่านมา +9

      Because your feet swell a little when you walk you should hike a bit before going to try out shoes. A few km should be enough. Good boots should be pliable enough that after a few shorter hikes the leather adjusts to your for *exactly* and they start fitting you perfectly, and then they'll hold the shape, not let water in (unless you get them soaked/submerged) and should keep your foot adequately warm without excessive sweating.

    • @omglolwots
      @omglolwots 28 วันที่ผ่านมา +7

      @@amunak_ Nothing compares to a thru-hike. I walked a ton before doing the PCT and my feet still grew/changed on trail. I regularly walk 10-15 miles around my city, run , and do 30 mile day hikes. A few km would not have been enough to know how my feet were going to change. My feet simply don't swell that quickly, it takes more than a day to see that change. I eventually ended up in different trail runners and a half size bigger. My feet were happy the rest of the trail with zero issues. The few people I met out there wearing boots ended up switching to trail runners.

    Folks, if you want to do this, do not jump directly to 250,000 steps/week. Jack had to do it because that's the challenge, but if you don't have to, ramp up slower. Start with whatever your normal routine, then add 1000-2000 steps every day or whatever amount you feel comfortable with, because trust me, going from a daily routine of maybe 10000 steps to 35000 is a lot. Get good shoes, really good shoes. Maybe invest in extra insoles. Depending on your weight, you may need ankle wraps and knee wraps. I'm middle-aged now, but back when I was in my twenties I did do 2-4 hour walks for fun and my work back then would have me walking like 50% of the time each shift. If you try to overwork your feet, you can injure yourself

      I know you've probably been told this, but start going to the gym. That and getting enough sleep (which is easier if you're regular at the gym) has helped me loads. And the latest science is really encouraging, all you need is like 20 minutes trice a week, as long as you put in your full effort. You just have to make it a habit.
      And here are some tips that worked for me:
      The best gym is the closest gym.
      The first couple of weeks feels great since you're quickly packing on muscle and getting the psychological benefits. The next couple of months can be a chore. Then it becomes less of a chore. And after a year or so it becomes a full-blown addiction, then you're kinda overflowing with nervous energy if you skip.
      Don't beat yourself up if you skip a day, try to avoid attaching negative emotions to the habit you're trying to form. If you skip a day, don't go and try and make it up the next day, or lengthen your next gym session, it's no biggie.
      Try and have a consistent time for your sessions, don't make any plans for the time slots.
      Don't worry about the numbers on the weights. All you have to do is try as hard as you can, and see some improvement every two weeks or so.
      Try and put the gym as high as you can on your priority list. Eg. "I'll skip drinking today, tomorrow is gym day."
      Keep the exercises as simple as you can. Fancy bullshit is really not that beneficial. Most of the fatigue in the gym is not on your muscles, but your nervous system - complicating things just makes your brain work harder and is draining, especially when you're going trough a bout of depression. Find simple dumbbell and barbell weight exercises, and try to hit a nice swath of muscle groups.
      Focus on technique and range of motion instead of weight. You'l avoid muscle sourness and stiffness. And you won't have to waste your time on fancy stretching.
      Find a gym on google maps, make a simple exercise routine (chat GPT can actually do a good job with it). And next time you're feeling a little bit more motivated go to the gym. No need to go right away if you're feeling shity, just make sure you're not just putting it off indefinitely.
      Sorry for the wall of text and I hope I inspired you at least a little bit to consider working out. It really is magical in the way it helps with depression.

    • @hw985a
      @hw985a 29 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

      @Triptowel That sounds about right for any good quality running shoe. You can probably compromise for something a bit cheaper, just understand they probably won't be as comfortable/supportive or last as long. For context, most running shoes are designed for only 500-800km, good trail runners will last a bit longer as they're designed to be more robust e.g. my nike pegasus were in usable condition to about 2500km although that's definitely on the higher end.
      Honestly, it's worth investing in better shoes if you want to take up any kind of hobby which will take a toll on your feet, the extra 50 quid over a mid range shoe, or 100 over a lower range shoe will pay dividends if those shoes are lasting longer and resulting in fewer injuries. It's also worth deeply investigating which brands or lines of shoes will fit you best as some are better for certain foot shapes, e.g. Hokas aren't usually so good for me whereas Topo is.
      Also try to get goretex ones as they're waterproof but still breathable

    • @amunak_
      @amunak_ 28 วันที่ผ่านมา +12

      Ehh trail runners are shit if you don't want your feet to get soaked and miserable. You can get good hiking boots, just not _boots_ boots like that. And they also need to fit you well. Can easily walk 30+km a day in good leather hiking boots *and* your feet will stay dry.
      Though they are also expensive, mine were like $200+.

    Hey, Jack! The professional strength training coach here again!
    What a lot of people don’t realize is just how much difference that you can visually see in your body in a short amount of time. What you did is what I have people do: DOCUMENT. Otherwise those small changes in time that someone might not normally see will go unnoticed. But when you have a side-by-side, it helps a lot!
    Along with this you have to take into account things like how much water is your body holding onto, is your activity different, what’s diet looking like, etc etc. All of that can also affect your physical appearance even within a week. It’s the same reason bodybuilders have “Peak Week” for a show in which their regimen will change that week going onto stage.

    I work a very physical job where I’m on my feet 90-95% of the day and work around 13-14 hours per shift that I work (I don’t work traditional 5 days a week so I have more off days and longer shifts) and I clock in somewhere between 16-20k steps per day. That coupled with my eating habits (typically I will eat foods that are higher in protein and less in calories and will only eat two meals at specific times of day) has led me to losing more than 15 pounds in the last 6 months while retaining a lot of my body’s original muscle mass. Joint pain is definitely real and the longer you stay stuck in one place without moving, the more you’ll feel it. Stretches help a lot especially hamstring stretches and calf stretches. But rest is really important too. If you’re not getting adequate sleep it’ll catch up with you very quickly. I don’t typically sleep much on my working days so by the end of the work week I’m usually ready to collapse. So for anyone considering doing this long term, make sure you’re getting an appropriate amount of rest each night and drinking lots of fluid so that your body can replace some of the salt you’ll be losing.

    Awesome challenge! Seeing your gait, I wonder how your slight external rotation of your right foot affects the body aches you get. Proper foot alignment and foot streght training has really helped me personally. Spending time outside and exploring wooded areas really makes my day when the sun is down by 5pm.
    I'd recommend trying barefoot shoes. Once i transitioned to those, I never want to wear normal shoes again. Crocs are essentially a type of barefoot shoes. Being able to feel the ground is something i never knew i craved when walking. Now I'm wearing toe shoes and really like being able to articulate the toes in shoes. All I'm saying is try it out, i think you'll love it.

    For anyone in the comments thinking about doing this (or if Jack sees this) there’s multiple comments about not losing muscle. With the amount of increased steps there needs to be a calorie increase (not only protein) to ensure muscle doesn’t get burned. Also with the length of movement in the morning fasted cardio will start to burn muscle, so eat before and after!
    Additionally sleep is one of the most important factors to muscle growth and overall health. I’m referencing this from memory, so I’m not going to get it 100% right, and research shows that if there’s two groups doing the same exercise, eating the same with the right macros, but one is sleeping 8 hours and one is sleeping 6 or less hours the one sleeping under the recommended will burn through muscle not fat.
    So I’m curious if he was sleeping more if he would have been able to increase his calories bc his body might have not been hungry bc it may have started burning muscle, or if his body would have recovered better and he could have avoided the swollen ankles!

    A pro-tip to reduce blistering: Make sure your shoes/boots are tied up tight; you don't want your feet moving/sliding around inside the shoe, or it will cause chafing, which will lead to blistering.
    Another tip: If you feel a hotspot (a tender and/or red area of your skin), you can apply athletic tape over the location. The tape will bear the brunt of the blister-causing friction; if you catch it quick enough, it can prevent a blister from forming.
    Wool socks can also help as they add cushion and are excellent at wicking away moisture, moisture that would otherwise weaken the skin and increase the amount of friction on it.

    The average size of a step is 2.1-2.5 feet, let’s say 2.3 feet. 35,700 steps a day at 2.3 feet each step would be 82,110 feet which is 15.551 miles or 25.027 kilometres a day. In total 250,000 steps would be around 575,000 feet which is 108.902 miles or 175.26 kilometres walked in a single week. That’s around the same distance between London and Leicester.
    Edit: Seeing the stats at the end Jack clearly has larger steps than average (about 2.7 feet per step), that’s about the distance between London and Birmingham (in terms of the roads used to travel there not in a straight line).

I feel like I get much less sick actually and the movement helps with stress too. Though I can not imagine spending much more time walking, if it's regular I wouldn't bump it up much tbh - sounds exhausting and time eating AF.
