I know it’s a very sad and scary topic, but I think this is one of the most important conversations everyone should have with their loved ones and also think about for themselves. Have any of you put any thought into your own goals of care? 🤔 Also make sure to wish Deepal Happy Birthday! 🎉 And please drop a LIKE & COMMENT! It helps the channel so much ❤️
Yes my late husband and I had serious conversations on what our wishes were. It does help the other person to be able to grant wishes. I knew when it was time to take him off life support. Although so hard I knew It was what he'd want. I was blessed to be rt by his side.was rt by his side 🙏 I got to talk to him 3 hrs, although in a coma as a former nurse, I believe hearing is the last to go. I was able to tell him it's OK to let go. He lived only 33 min after removing all the machines and comfort measures. So so hard for me. But good for him 😢 A topic for every family to discuss before anything happens.dont talk around the pt, talk to the pt.😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢
I’m a retired RN and was POA for my 89 year old mom. We had to have an end of life discussion with her as she was losing her 12 year battle with metastatic breast Ca. She totally did not understand why we were even having the discussion and very seriously said she intended to live to 100. And was dead serious lol. I tried so hard to get her to agree to hospice and she wouldn’t have anything to do with it. Six months later she finally agreed to hospice and 48 hours later she died. Hospice had opened her case 10 hours before she passed way. I wish she’d have agreed to it sooner- it’s such a wonderful service. These are tough, but necessary conversations to have. You’re doing a great job! I worked in critical care and dialysis my entire career- it seems like you’re pretty fun to work with! Glad you’re getting a lot of experience 😊
Wow, I am so sorry to hear that but I am glad she went comfortably. You took great care of her. So awesome you worked in CC, I am sure you helped so many families!!
been watching your vlogs for a couple of weeks now. I'm a radiology resident and finished a pretty difficult 24 h shift just this morning, didn't get any sleep but told myself "thats the life we chose" as I walked out of the hospital and it kinda helped :D You're gonna do great in Step 3, best of luck ☺ And of course the happiest of birthdays to Deepal! 🎉
Happy Birthday Deepal! I agree that goals of care are very important. Working in hospice as an RN has opened my eyes to the various dynamics such as relationships, cultures/beliefs, and even misconceptions or unrealistic expectations that can greatly affect goals of care for the patient. Active listening and empathy can really help these discussions and make patients/families more receptive to education regarding the goals of care.
I love your talking points SO MUCH!!! they're so important and I appreciated how you differentiated between excitement for performing a procedure on a pt vs. the pt's perspective 💛 You're amazing and I look forward to every video! :) And happy birthday Deepal!!! We luv you too ^-^
Thank you Shaun, I always learn something new from your vlogs. I wish you all the best and I hope bad things will never get to you and you'll always be a great doctor. Stay strong!
Happy birthday Deepal!! My MRI is Friday for the bump on my left leg, they are putting me to sleep because I jump at loud noise because of my cerebral palsy, I’m gonna tell my anesthesiologist I donate to the anesthesiologist Foundation, since it was hard for me to go to college because of my cerebral palsy, it takes a special person to be a anesthesiologist or CRNA and you’re one of them
Happy birthday Deepal 🎊 🎉. Hope you have a great birthday 🎂 and thank you for educating about CRPS. I am battling it and a lot of doctors don’t understand this condition or dismiss the symptoms unfortunately!
Great vlog, Dr Shaun!!! I was reminded of when my father in law was dying from cancer and I had to make difficult decisions on his behalf. Very sad, but also necessary. Looking forward to next week on the " Highway to Hell" series! Dont stress about Step 3, you got this! Happy Birthday Deepal!
I haven't gotten much exposure to the ICU during my rotations in med school so far but you're kinda making me excited for it! Sounds like a fulfilling role
Happy Birthday, Deepal!🎉 I appreciate the important discussion you had at the end. When my dad got very sick unexpectedly and was in the ICU, we were left assuming what he'd want for care. This was a topic he was too uncomfortable to discuss when he was alive, so we had to trust the Dr's advice and take him off life support after about a week. Very tough.
Your vlogs keep getting better and better and the authentic conversation you have is always so on point. Its very refreshing! Your goals of care discussion is exactly very important and now we understand why Boards keep testing us on this. Best of luck for step 3! I have step 2 soon as well!!
Hi Dr. Andersen (from Georgia). I have been watching your content since the beginning of this year but hardly ever comment but I would click the LIKE button🤗 I really connected with you as you're doing your ICU rounds hence my Mom💝 transitioned (2012) while on the unit. It was a very sad moment in my life that I thought that I would never get through. I want to personally THANK YOU for your hard work, dedication and care that I see in all your vlogs❣️. Bless you on your health care journey. ✨

Shaun, this is the training you have to have in order to save people lives . And i have no doubt you will be a fantastic doctor . I hope you will always have the wonderful personality that you possess . And Happy Birthday 🎂 to Deepal. i hope he had a great one.
just saw the important lesson towards the end of the vlog, sorry about your father and thank you for sharing your learnings whilst discussing and encouraging the viewers. As an IMG, seeing what we learn through qbanks about ethics being implemented makes it all the more real.
I was literally watching one of your vlogs and opened the channel oh new vlog, your vlogs are very inspiring and motivate me to persevere I’m a second year medical student thank you and I wish you success in your exam and your career 🤍🤍
I hit watch seconds after I got the notification. Sending love your way. I am currently sick as with “micro plasma pneumonia” which to put it bluntly sucks ass! I’m on my third course of antibiotics plus steroids. Even worse it is summer. My 19 year old appears to also be getting in. Bloody sucks so your videos bring me an escape.
Love the content man, I’m currently in radiation therapy school so your vids help a ton brother. God bless you. People really don’t realize the amount of stress and work load that comes along with any kind of health degree tbh. Just have to make it through finals this week and I’m out for Christmas ❤️🙏🏼then 2 more semesters to go of senior year to obtain my bachelors in radiation therapy!🙏🏼💪may potentially pursue getting dosimetry masters degree but will be down the road just wanna get through this as of now😂

Hi Shaun: Another great video, so real and thought provoking, amid very busy week :) Thank you. 🎉🎉 Could you pencil in a request to have a video for a later day (no rush) on how you deal with the emotional stress from seeing patients pass away ? A lot of med students and residents do not have this kind of experiences and often get shell shocks from it. Thanks again.
I really like your seek discomfort hoodie ⚡️happy birthday to Deepal 🎉🎉 good luck for the rest of the icu rotation! Will you consider a christmas playlist ? 🤔
After everything I dealt with in Corrections while workong 62 to 90 hours a week, often 30 days straight at a time....I feel like I can definitely handle med school. I'm terrified right now, keep psyching myself out. But nursing degree, and then med school, then anesthesiology fellowship. I have a 13-year journey about to start.
Shaun, I really appreciate your vlogs, and I have to add something to your last thought regarding goals of care. I used to belong to that religious group that refused blood transfusions. Something that many, including their doctors, don’t realize is these patients are under tremendous pressure from their family, clergy, and other members to not get a blood transfusions. Even if it means they will die. If a member accepted a transfusion and others knew about it, they would be shunned and cut off by everyone they know for that decision, and that is a terrifying prospect. Some of these members of the religion would absolutely accept a blood transfusion if their doctor talked to them privately and promised confidentiality. I believe strongly in informing healthcare providers about this, because maybe it could save a life. Thank you for all your hard work and all the positive energy you put out into the world!!
thank you so much for the perspective!! It is definitely such a tough situation to be in as a patient and as a provider but agree we need to understand these cultures more!

It really is a sad and scary thing that people are sick of being in the hospital but it's a good idea to be a hospital because they are not doing well and they need medical attention and get better soon as possible so that they don't end up in the same place again to me l the same thing that is a little bit longer than everything else's
