  • Washing your MTB when you live in a flat or apartment can be a pain; but dropping mud everywhere and having to face the wrath of housemates/family/partner can be even more of a pain. So we got Henry to share some of his top bike cleaning tips🔧
    Subscribe: gmbn.tech/subscribetogmbntech
    The GMBN Shop: gmbn.tech/jA
The best tip for keeping your bike looking respectable is to wash the mud off when it's still wet. If it does dry it's not the end of the world but your life will be a little harder.
You can use a bucket and brush, handheld pressure washer, or even a garage car wash (but be careful of the pressure!) to get the worst of the mud off.

Quick hose down close to the riding site followed by extensive cleaning right before i take it indoors. A hand-pump garden sprayer being the best upgrade *ever!*

What manufacturer makes that pressure washer?
One thing I’ve found that works well to protect my frame after cleaning is to use an automotive spray wax. Wash and dry the bike, then spray the wax onto a microfiber towel and wipe down the frame. It will shine and repel water/mud.

The pressure washer at a self service car wash is not too powerful if you don't squeeze the lever and just use it on low pressure. I live at riding distance from my trails so I always wash my bike this way on my way back home, being careful around any bearings and gaskets and so far no problems

    My method:
    1. Rince with a bottle and a bucket
    2. Clean with a wet soft sponge if needed
    3. Cover rear brake + rotor and degrease drivetrain
    4. Wait then lube chain
    5. Try some tricks to dry up bike

It might be best to use a soft microfibre wash mitt like you use on cars with a lot of foam or bubbles, for bikes with glossy paint to prevent scratches that make the paint look dull. Some people aren’t bothered, but I suppose it holds resale value and looks nicer...

When I first got my Talon I used to degrease and lube the drivetrain every ride and mucoff the rest.
I only ever used a garden hose with a trigger yet after 300 miles my chain and derailleur were shot.
Not long after the headset was a brown mess and I needed a new hub.
With my T-130 I've only ever mucoffed it, never degrease again and tried not to direct the water at bearings.
600 miles in now and the headset and hub bearings have had to be replaced recently.
To be fair most of that has been muddy winter riding but now it's summer I only wipe off the dust with a brush and reoil the chain, no washing.
It seems bikes can't take any water sprayed at them and cleaning products degrease too much even watered down.
I do like the mucoff on the brush idea, might have to use that one on the frame.

    • @smokedsalmon3907
      @smokedsalmon3907 5 ปีที่แล้ว

Same here. I used to soap and degrease the entire drivetrain practically every other ride. Then it ended up ruining my rear hub and needed a replacement. Now I only use water to clean, chain still gets simple green, and everything lasts way longer. People are too ready to use degreasers and heavy cleaners on their bikes.

We got two of these for our daughters th-cam.com/users/postUgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L the same size for age 6 and 9. It works very well for both girls. Gears were very easy for them to learn. Changing gears up takes some hand strength and is a bit hard, but they are learning. They did not come with water bottle holders- we actually got confused and thought the Derailler Guard was the bottle holder!! Regardless of these details, the bikes are fantastic- even our six year old who only just learned to ride bikes caught on within an hour of practice and loves it. Lightweight and easy for them to handle. All the parts are in excellent condition and the bikes are easy to assemble and very well packaged. Great choice for kids!

Washing a bicycle at the trail start is one but sometimes you do not have any access to water there. What than ? Since I live in Cracow Poland and I have to travel to a bit to the trails that do not have any cabins that have water access at trails I have to wash my bike in my flat. I generally dismount the wheels and wash all of the bicycle in my bath tube and hand him to dry off on my balcony. Genarally all I have i a simple not had scrub with some dish soap and that is enough to get all the mud and dirt off. You just have to be carefull not to scrape your tub. Second possibility is to use the car wash but you have to wash the bike from a bigger distance to have the presure low not to wash of all the grease off the bearings.

    1) power cleaning is not advised, had very bad experience with it even when not going to the bearings or drivetrain. Try to avoid it.
    2) WD40 is a big brand that has a lot of products, but the main one (and single product) that is available globaly is a grease disolvent which is not paint friendly...

Most of the time I just wipe off muck using a damp microfibre cloth, the type they sell in a big roll usually in the motoring section of a general store, sometimes household cleaning stuff. They grab soil etc really well, when used with a bucket of water it can be a really effective and quick way to clean the frame and tyre walls / wheel rims without spraying and ending up having to re-lube (assuming the drivetrain didn't get very wet during the ride).
Always worth grabbing the dirt off the jockey wheels as that's where most of it seems to collect, I have a dirty microfibre cloth for this, I just pinch off the dirt as the jockey wheel slowly turns.
After really wet / muddy rides I will spray using a normal garden hosepipe attachment (not a pressure washer), shake off the excess water, dry as much as I can with a dry microfibre cloth (including between the rear sprockets to remove pine needles and old oil etc - there's a pipecleaner-cum-floss product made for this purpose if you like that sort of thing, I just use the edge of a microfibre cloth), then apply GT85 to the drivetrain to remove the moisture and re-lube.
I'll only run the chain through a chain cleaner if it's become particularly gritty and wiping doesn't get rid of it.
My basic routine keeps the bike looking like new, the gears always run very smoothly so for me the extra few minutes of care after every ride is definitely worth it.

I have a bike specific cleaner and every time I wash my bike and thoroughly rinse the brakes with clean water it ruins my brakes and I have to remove the pads and sand them, clean the rotors and bed in again!! Pain in the h@#e

I would suggest targeting with your cleaner, maybe apply it to a damp cloth first instead of spray and pray. I don't rinse my brakes specifically though I'm sure they get wet when I rinse, never have a problem (I rarely use any bike cleaner).

I feel like you forgot the most important part which is re lubing your chain and greasing your bearings after you basically washed all the lube off your bike.

I think the idea is not to wash the grease off bearings and hinges etc. Normal washing shouldn't do this (but a pressure washer pointed at the wrong place will).

I always make a quick cleaning with my Mobil-bike-kärcher before I bring my bike into the Appartement or my van www.kaercher.com/int/home-garden/mobile-cleaning/oc-3-bike-box-16800030.html

#askgmbntech thanks for the cleaning tips Henry. I deep clean my bike after a wet or muddy ride. Is it ok to wash the disc rotors with soapy cloth? Does washing it affects the braking performance? Thanks.
