    this was seriously interesting to listen to. made me think about how conservative BNM has become over the past ten years. not only are there not as many 9.0+ ratings anymore, but the 9.0s are only given in very particular circumstances. Supersilent isn't gonna be getting any great reviews anymore, bands like Out Hud are under the bus. It's less about exposing people to interesting new music as much as it is just an economy. the original ethos that they were thriving off of in the mid 2000s is dead and gone. it's about making the right business play for the Pitchfork brand. And giving the new Clipping record, or the new Hot Chip album a BNM designation isn't gonna be good for the sorts of connections that are going to make you the most amount of $$$ and bring you the most buzz as a website/brand.
    Please have Chris back on the show again. These are the kinds of conversations we need to be having about the modern music industry.

    Pitchfork Media should change its name to "Grain of Salt Media". Chris was a great guest. A little jaded for my taste, but he had a lot to say and spoke well.

    Great guest and interview but Anthony you seemed detached a lot of the time, especially when Ott was making colorful jokes and complimenting you a ton

    • @TheTelepathicKid
      @TheTelepathicKid 9 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      +Sm ramgator I don't know, I think that he feels if if he were to succumb to any of the jokes Ott was making about Pitchfork he would seem against Pitchfork.
      I think he's trying to be as objective as possible.
      I also think he probably doesn't want to really acknowledge Ott's compliments as it's not about him, it's about the interview and the interview subject.

    • @MrKarim992
      @MrKarim992 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +Sm ramgator he usually is quite dismissive about compliments, it was the same in the injury reserve episode. maybe it just makes him feel weird i sometime feel like that.

    Small note at 1:16:52, Condé Nast is not a publicly-traded company (unlike Time Warner, the then parent company of Chris's former employer) . Since 1959 it's been a division of the mass-media conglomerate Advance Publications, which serves as the private holding company for the Newhouse family.

  • @ManufacturedLegions
    @ManufacturedLegions 9 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    Pitchfork beginning on the slow roll into a music tabloid is unfortunate but predictable. They're the last, obstinate vestige of the indie era and they've been long overdue for subsumption by companies like Conde Nast. This was the same trajectory that every movie review show on television had- lest we forget that entertainment tonight started out for the purpose of reviewing and presenting movies and television, and look how that turned out. The reality is that media criticism represents a challenge for modern consumerist capitalism, but that criticism is eventually a purchasable commodity.

    I could listen to Chris talk for hours. Hugely insightful. The stuff about Pitchfork and Class privilege in music was spot on. People are so willing to eat up whatever pitchfork thinks is cool--their stamp of approval can be purchased.

  • @burritoman12
    @burritoman12 9 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    Dude just let the conversation go where it wants to. You seemed so annoyed at Chris for having other things he wanted to talk about (privilege and being "anti-establishment")
    That said, Ott's critique of Ian Cohen was pretty damn blunt and was fun to listen to.

    Chris Ott said Iggy Pop, Michael Gira, and David Bowie all were well off rich kids. Iggy Pop's family lived in a trailer in Yipsilanti Michigan. His dad was a teacher so im pretty sure that's wrong

    A "conversation" with Chris Ott is misleading. It's a lowbrow interview when you address a bulleted list of predetermined questions and refuse to deviate from them. Ott was a great guest but you may as well have just sent him a sheet of talking points and let him do the show himself if you're not going to try to encourage any serious/organic discussion. You just sound bored the whole time; if you're not feeling the podcast, then just don't do it. You're an awful host, Anthony.

    Chris Ott was talking out of his ass. Spin was covering the Strokes and the NYC scene when it was happening in the early 00s. He shit'son panic and the disco, but says reviewers should bite and review all this pop shit.

    To those who are saying Anthony isn't interested in conducting this interview, listening to his guest, or whatever - this interview ended up interesting most of us anyway. Maybe Anthony knows his guest a little bit more than you, and what kind of interview would produce the most content. You can't deny there was a lot of interesting content here. To be honest, I also wanted Anthony to take a little credit for himself, or respond to the massive compliments he seemed to be getting. But that's not really so important.

    1:14:46 The last point Chris made in this interview predicted the future of P4k with scary accuracy. It feels like the website is no long backing any kind of new album/artist/scene with even the faintest of enthusiasm. They didn't give any album in 2023 a 9.0+. What a joke.

    Looking back, Pitchfork being bought out really affected them in the worst way. Their lists have become worse and worse and more pandering to political views so much so that they can barely be called music journalism. It's embarrassing. I miss Ott and Pitchfork in general.

      To be fair, back when Chris was writing for Pitchfork, Godspeed was more popular and getting press, and using that press to mouth off on music they thought sucked. I love Godspeed, but they could be pedantic as hell, and that's likely what colors Chris' opinion. He may also think they're a bad band.
