Dude, this was great. I joined an affiliate several years ago and the coach gave me a nutrition orientation and exposed me to Paleo, which gradually figured out and applied. He also had an optional weigh-in for members at the beginning of every months. I started seeing immediate results - every month, the weight was coming off.. As a result, I went to as many classes a week as I could, and the results reinforced paleo eating. I lost 50 lbs in less than a year. I was hooked. I joined a second affiliate after the pandemic (first one closed). No discussion about food, sleep - just hard/heavy WODs. I miss the first place. I now workout of my garage - alone. Too bad you're not in Los Angeles - would join in a heartbeat.
This is spot on! I left an affiliate because almost every class started with an icebreaker question or game and wasted at least 5 minutes. I’m here for a workout not an awkward business meeting.
THANK YOU Andrew... I am former Co owner and can tell you that this was a fight I was always having... but it was and still is a hill I will die on. And the hill is simple... It's that 95-98% of your membership just want to come in and sweat, with the purpose of looking and feeling better - They do not care about all the extra stuff like the breakdown of range of motion or the mindset of an athlete, nor do they want to spend 15 minutes of a class drilling down technique or skill building...there is a place for that yes, but as you mentioned in the video, its your job to give them that during movement without them even noticing. I think what happens a lot is that affiliate owners are competitors and love and live for all the small extra stuff that comes along with competitive training. and don't get me wrong, I am a competitor and live and breath all the small stuff and the science behind it, but I always knew that that was just me and that no one else really cares...and guess what...that is okay. If you own a gym, you can always offer a "competitor" class were you can go over strategy and stimulus intent until you are blue in the face...you can offer weekend clinics to sharpened or develop skills as well. But ultimately, your program should cater to the 95% and not the 5%. you should not have 95% of your class always scaling movements in a wod...instead, have Scale UPs simply by keeping things simple, and saying, hey, RX + is Ring Muscle Ups or RX is Lunges while RX + is pistols...you get the point...anyways..again Thank you - sincerely a guy that agrees with you on this.
Great video! I confess, I am a grip wearer!!! Doing bat work, dumbbell stuff sometimes and occasionally barbell work. 😐 I do however live in Thailand, my box is outdoor, no AC. It's 30+° every day & humidity is 💦💦💦 So to stop me falling off things, dropping dbs on my head and throwing bars around, I used them. Chalk does work but not always
Thanks god I learned the “Belt, straps, grips, knee sleeve, lifter, wrist” rule early in my CF journey 🙏🏾. I see often people that can’t workout because they don’t have “whatever” they are used to
When I was coaching in a CrossFit gym THE SECOND the class started we were moving. I’d just have everyone start on a machine, crank the music, and I’d call out movements we were doing in the warm up. Id run around catching up with everyone, and demo the movement for those who were newer. The amount of gyms I’ve gone to that drone on at the whiteboard for 20 min at the start of class is too many. 20 freaking minutes!!!!
There is a video you did a while ago talking about deadlift and putting on equipment/taking shoes off and when i look at what i'm doing that day and deciding wither i need equipment or not that video plays through my head. I use equipment but only when it is necessary (heavy days). Tried using wraps when doing bar work but i hate them. Would rather feel the bar when trying to hang from it than have a bit of fabric in between, plus i have tiny hands so can't hold on with them.
This was a powerful. Most people look for magic hacks and shortcuts -- but the vast majority of the juice is understanding and executing general principles and mindset.
Good video. Insightful, knowledgable and useful. And the oddest thing - I couldn’t help but think ‘what would Beth’s version of this video look like?’ I think we already know the answer though.
I consider that if you want to talk, you’d need to find the time to, otherwise you’ll miss the point. As a coach sometimes I find something really interesting, that we would like to share with everyone but then I realise not everyone wants to know it, and that could be the best piece of advice I could’ve given in my earlier days. So one of the things I learned is, treating everyone as a 5 years old, keeping them busy, interested and not over complicating things, and if they are more interested I like to create spaces where they can learn more, while moving. Oh well, great content. ❤
I usually brought my bag with everything in it but rarely used anything in it. You only need wraps, sleeves, belts if you are near max lifts. I am shocked when I see people warming up with a belt on.
One of the most frustrating things I have seen at a gym was letting the customers pick the programming that leaned on weightlifting and didn't back up that choice with coaching, leading to a lack of standards in all movements.
I ditched the wrist a long time ago, only pull out the weightlifting belt for beefy squats, deadlifts and cleans and rarely use my knee sleeves. Build strength in those joints you won’t need shiny stuff, because you’ll be the shiny stuff!!! I FRICKIN LOVE THIS
Preach! I never got used to grips. So what if I tear occasionally. I've fallen off the bar before not wrapping my thumb around. I will never not do it. Feels way more secure anyway.
agree on most Hillman but a big diff between crossfit and Orange theory, F45 and others is any person can step in to the latter and do everything the first day. it takes months or even years for some crossfitters to handle a barbell properly or learn the rig movements. some people just don’t wanna have to do high skill movements. those other places are simple compared to what we do 🤷🏻♂️
Those other places are simple because they suck. They have bullshit exercise selection so people can “feel good” (which, okay, is fine for health and longevity) but does nothing for performance. Tried and true: heavy barbell compounds, basic “military” calisthenics (pushup, pull-up, sit up, lunge, etc), kettlebells, boxes, dumbbells, and cardio (run, row, bike, ski). Fuck all those other places with their weak candy-ass shit.
I didn't get this channel at first... But i have to say that has a lot of insight... We can learn something for sure...This is one of your best videos ... Keep up bro ..
Do you actually suggest doing scap pull ups and push ups daily? I never thought they did much, but I was probably doing them far too short range of motion
I use to use gloves and grips when I first started, started realizing I had less grip with them on,then I would tear all the time bare handed, I learn to shave my calculuses and use a stone and now I can’t remember the last time I ripped.
Before crossfit, I got most of my fitness from running, sit-ups, push-ups, pull-ups, dips, a pair of shoes and a $50 tower from Kmart. Not as comprehensive as crossfit but, a gym isn't really necessary. I otherwise agree with your basic premise, Andy.
It’s only been about 1.5 years since I re-took my L1, the talks on nutrition are fantastic. The points of sleep , water, stress and recovery are never really a focus point. Hope you bring that to HQ attention. We all were wrapped up in movement quality and intensity the lifestyle basics were skipped. Great points tho.
Great video ! We want to reaffiliate but we also want forging elite fitness or life changing fitness to be the focus. Not safe spaces and community 😅. Even though I love the members, we're not here to drink tea. Lol.
Spot on. I think the number one reason why people quit is that they don't want to change their nutrition habits and sleep.... They get excited in the beginning from doing all these cool stuff but then they plateau and it's because of their nutrition which they would rather give up crossfit than changing something about nutrition and sleep.
Agree on the talking. You go to an hour class at orange theory and you are probably working out 45 minutes. My gripe sometimes about CrossFit is the hour class only involved 1 strength lift and then 8 minute emom or something. 18 minutes of working out is meh and definitely not enough to lose weight for those who want to. That means 42 minutes of the class were talking or warming up etc. I like CrossFit but I think the class structure varies so widely day to day and coach to coach that it falls short when compared to the hyper structured bootcamps or classes at big boxes. Just my thought
This is great, but I have one question and one comment: 1) How does CrossFit gets these 5 things wrong? From everything I’ve seen, they espouse all the same things you’re saying. 2) Do AS MUCH as you can in an hour is absolutely correct, but that shouldn’t necessarily be mistaken for more volume in the workouts. Most people need one intense workout per day, ranging from 5 to 30 minutes (occasionally longer), not a watered down strength + metcon every day.
Our coach always says to work to our intentions for that session. He knows we all have different goals, it also ensure we tick all the boxes for the session.
@@hillerfit fair enough, I thought you were referring to CrossFit as a methodology or a brand. For what it's worth, my coaches and I strive hard to make sure we're addressing all of these factors, and I personally know many other Affiliate owners who would say the same. There are many sub-par CF gyms, yes, but there are also many who are holding the standard high. P.S. Thanks for addressing the thumbs around the bar when hanging. Too many people don't know the inefficiency (and danger) of kipping with thumbs on top of the bar.
I remember in the early days Crossfitters never wore belts, wraps or grips only taping the hands to prevent tears. Anything else was considered cheating. True story.
Hiller- if it comes out of the ground or has a face eat it. My wife listening- so like apples don’t count because it’s a tree not the ground, so like potatoes? 😂
Form will typically follow function. The opposite cannot be assumed. It's a hard point to sell to people these days, so you might as well be an example of form also to get your point across.
Crossfit and affiliates are like Sporty Beth...they are both dying a slow death. I hope for Sporty that she wakes up and realizes this...as for CF and affiliates, I dont care TBH. I have been doing CF since 2014 and I can manage it just fine on my own. Great content as always Hiller!
you need 90 minutes. well, at least for what i want now. i got what i wanted from an hour a day and eating better. now i have different goals. i spent the last year spending the first 15 minutes working on skills i didnt have and shorted the strength and my deadlift dropped about 100 pounds to 475. now im trying to work on olympic more and other things are getting neglected. plus i need to add some intervals to increase my engine. just not enough time. looking at rowers and assault bikes for a good used deal to do seperate at home.
Anyone else have to wash their wrist wraps every couple weeks because they start to smell bad because you’re wearing them constantly? Felt like Andrew was speaking directly to me 😅…
Nothing wrong here. But the beginning is the tell for why CrossFit has peaked and is in decline. It is hard. A tiny fraction of the population wants to live that lifestyle. My hubs and I just watched this and both agreed this is one of the best videos you've ever made. Spot on good stuff.
Ah don't get me started on the "I can only do pullups on my bar"
And "my rope"
Like you can ONLY do the moment if the conditions are perfect

This needs to be on blast everywhere. In every gym. In every home. For every person. THIS IS SO GOOD.
Love when Hiller does these sorts of videos. Gets me to tighten up my act. Thank you, sir!
Same. I always have in my mind, if Hiller saw this....
"More Bangable". Sold. Where do I sign up?
I really appreciate this video and topic. Thanks for the reminder and thanks for your passion. Keep them coming.
Good points. I'm going to change up my coaching a bit
Less is more. This is low-key Top 10 video.
What do you think about power naps? I personally sleep 4 to 5h a night and 1 or 2 power naps of 1h a day.
Everyone needs to hear this. I stopped using my belt and lifting shoes a while ago and noticed a definite change for the better.
Two things that happen when we venture out into public.
1: What do you do for training?
2: someone wants to touch my arms

I agree with 99% of what your saying...but no alcohol? There are a lot of people that get better looking the more alcohol I drink!

If this is what has been meant, I'm in
Need "more bangable" tshirt merch
Another Banger🦇
