  • What did legendary adventurer Sir Richard Francis Burton discover when he went to Utah in 1860? What were his thoughts on polygamy, Joseph Smith, and Brigham Young (who he met in person)? In this video I read some choice passages from his book about his journey. Some things might surprise you.

Fascinating. There would be little to shock or surprise a man like this, so well-traveled and spoken. He seems to analyze and judge things fairly.

This video makes Sir Richard Burton seem a very interesting man in all his travels. I would think he would be quite notable with languages and his writings. What an opportunity to be a great influence to much of our society. Yet i have never heard of him until today. Contrast that with what the young, less traveled Joseph Smith did and what he wrote

Burton does seem to have been a really amazing person. Very picturesque adventurer type. I've been meaning to read a biography of him.

I'm curious to know did this man ever read the Book of Mormon? And, did Brigham Young have notes of their meeting? Also, was Burton a religious man seeking God? And lastly, a statement...I don't know the entire history, but I do know this. These people knew scripture from the Holy Bible and lived to serve God. When they read the Book of Mormon, they were convinced and came to form the church. They risked their lives, died from murder, fatigue, sickness. I know the Holy Bible and I'm half way thru Book of Mormon. I am seeking God....not Joseph Smith or Brigham Young. The Book of Mormon is true. There is no way man wrote this alone. God please have mercy on me and each one of them for they know not what they do.

Thanks for your comment! Burton did read the Book of Mormon--he gives a detailed summary of it in his book. From what I've read of him Burton seems areligious, neither believing nor disbelieving. That's part of what makes his account more unbiased than many contemporary ones.

Perfectly awesome. Thanks so much for this information. I am going to start looking for a copy of this book. Do you know if it has been reprinted recently? Thanks again for all you do. The truth will at last prevail and prove Joseph to be a righteous man and Brigham the spawn of Satan.

@@IBelieveJoseph Hello again, What is the church if in fact it was highjacked by BY, in your opinion? It became clear to me the church was not what it claimed long before I was aware of the BY/JS polygamy origins debate got going. It seems you still find value in the organization or at minimum the BOM? I struggle to see how the chuch holds any value for you or 132 problems? This issue says more about God as the head of this church then it does the mortal men who proport to lead it under gods direction.

@@ericredd4544 Through it all I was taught good principals and morals so I don't want to toss everything out. As far as the church being salvageable I really don't know. Some say we have the priesthood keys and authority. I really don't know if we do. Only God knows and He will take care of things however He feels is best. I do know that the Book of Mormon tells us there will be corruption in all the churches when Christ returns. It also says that we will wake up to our aweful situation and I think that is happening now. I am not very active any more and I don't hold any teaching positions because I do not support the "brethren" and I won't lie to make myself look good or to get a temple recommend. I am not even sure about the temple.

The book itself is an extremely difficult and demanding read - due to his writing style and personality. After browsing through a free PDF copy, I decided against paying for a hard copy. Its a bit like wading waist deep through treacle.
Even so, he does seem to be an honest and perceptive observer. This video though is an accurate and helpful summary of his observations about Brigham Young and Salt Lake City when the population was ( think he said) only about 12000.

The history of the book of Mormon portrays hatred to the black skin population between 1848 - 1978 the only reason they changed after 1978 that American civil rights movement where on the heels on the Mormon church, and they had to change their direction not from God, it is political
      movement.

    • @IBelieveJoseph

He apparently assumed it was Joseph. And why wouldn't he? That's what all the Mormons in Utah said, and who would know better? Never being exposed to any serious critique of the idea, he had no reason to doubt it.
