    To Clarify: We actually think Josh’s video is great, as mentioned several times in our reaction. Though we question whether or not this video is the first thing a new or prospective brewer should see if they’re looking for a solid resource on making beer. For example, @thebrusho has an entire channel full of videos that rival the production quality of Josh’s vid, but with more relevant and accurate information (because @Thebrusho is a highly experienced home brewer!!!). Why not introduce a newbie to a resource like that instead of directing them to a guy who made a one-off brewing video containing outdated information?

      Wow thank you so much for the shoutouts!!Agree with a lot of what’s said in this video. Maybe his video will bring more people into the hobby but hopefully channels like ours keep them around! 🍻

      How would he have accomplished what you wanted? Put up a two minute video saying hey i was gonna make a homebrew video but I'm not the expert...you should go watch these guys, okay bye! If someone is an existing fan of Weissman, and they watch his video, who's to say that won't spark an interest in the hobby that drives them to more homebrewing content? I don't think he's trying to be a definitive source...he's providing another entry point for someone who likes his cooking content but hadn't thought of homebrewing before. I'd go with you as far to say that he could have included links to some of the better TH-cam homebrewing channels for more information, but he's more than allowed to try to make a one-off homebrewing video if he wants.

    • @PartyTimeBrewing

      Brewing is fun! Great perspective on the vid! Beauty is he only has one video on it, so anyone researching will probably find two or three videos at least before they try it. Cheers!

      @@jeff-martin Did Joshua Weissman put the recommendation up? No, that's TH-cam. They've repeatedly said the video is good. The problem is that TH-cam prioritizes large channels even when they aren't the best source for the material being searched for. TH-cam prioritizes more views, and more ad revenue. 🤷‍♂️

    • @jeff-martin
      @jeff-martin 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Vykk_Draygo yes but when the thumbnail and the majority of the focus is on Weissman’s video, that really kills the message. I’d be TOTALLY on Kyle’s side if he made a video about the algorithm favoring popular accounts over more definitive sources, but that is barely mentioned, and when it is, it’s poorly framed to the point that it looks like he’s calling Weissman out for not promoting more seasoned BrewTube creators.

    Joshua Weissman's video was my very first introduction to home-brewing. I had been interested in cooking as a general skill, and brewing beer seemed like one of those extra things you could do for flair. I was watching Binging with Babish and Joshua pretty heavily, and on a whim, I bought and made a Saison extract kit with a homebrew starter kit. From there, I joined a local club and the rest is history, thanks to his video.

    Hi 👋 very interesting you mentioned his Video. I just ordered my first brewing equipment and before that, I watched a lot of videos to get into this topic. One of the first Videos I watched was Joshua's. Honestly I have to say if you're a newbie like me his video was a pretty good one. Not because it was the technical best, but it gave me the best impression which are the essential steps for brewing (even if he used malt extract). Yes I think you're right with a lot of points. When I got more deeply into every single aspect before ordering my setup, other channels were Simply better. Homebrew4life as example made a pretty good video about why you shouldn't buy a glass fermenter. Like you mentioned. But as a newbie the "brewing focused channels" turned out to be really cool for a deep dive, but for my first impressions how this works, Joshua's video was quite cool. I liked his video and it was a nice starting point as an source for information.
    Not a hate comment just an honest opinion. I like your channel and what you guys are doing. Sorry for grammar and greetings from Germany 🍻 Prost

    Wow I must say that when I first started researching this hobby I started consuming EVERYTHING I could find on TH-cam, I never stumbled across his video which is kind of strange but happy because I probably would have run out and bought a glass carboy, until I saw the other brewtubers specifically Doin' The Mosts video on why carboys are suddenly shattering. Super happy that I found the ones I have and look forward to future one's as well. Loving my clawhammer system! I guess I never went with the simple search term of "how to brew beer" and more direct such as brewing an IPA or brewing a blonde ale, once I found a few good channels I started seeking out more. I learned a lot of stuff I didn't need to learn such as vourlauf, HLT, etc and went with a clawhammer system. I just don't have the ability to use propane at my apartment.

    "There are currently dozens of high-quality channels on TH-cam that are hyper-focused on the art and science of brewing beer at home"
    ...and if you were not previously interested in brewing beer, you'd never see a single one of them. But if you like cooking and you like Joshua Weissman, you may see his video, become interested in the idea of brewing beer at home, and look one of those channels up. JW's video is an outstanding appetizer for someone who may have otherwise never thought of brewing at home before, and you're gatekeeping their way in because you don't like how SEO and the TH-cam algorithm work. And that's your real argument - you're mad at TH-cam for not promoting these "better" videos. But again, at worst JW's video gets ignored by someone who doesn't wanna make beer. At best, it leads them down a path that they watch all these channels with regularity.

      @@asd-en2ee when you’re putting someone’s face in your thumbnail and a big X over that thumbnail it tends to poison whatever other message you have in your video. I understand that Clawhammer throws a lot of compliments in Joshua’s direction. But I don’t think Joshua’s video is meant to be a definitive homebrew video. It’s a video to get non-brewers interested in brewing. And once they do they can look to Flora, Genus, Clawhammer, Homebrew Challenge and others for more information. Clawhammer’s primary complaint seems to be that TH-cam favors JW’s video when you search how to brew beer, which is a fair complaint, but it’s not something any of the parties he mentions in this video can address. All this I say as a huge fan of Clawhammer, their videos, and all the channels recommended here.

But it did pique my interest in the subject (I'm kind of weird; I was interested in brewing beer long before I was interested in drinking it), and I expect Weissman's video will do the same (as it seems, from the comments here and elsewhere, it has done).
    The Good Eats episode aired 20 years ago, and I think he can be forgiven for not referring his viewers to many of today's resources--he did highly recommend the LHBS, which was a good recommendation for the time. It's a pity Weissman didn't link to some of the bigger brewing channels or sites as a "for further study" thing, though.

    I do use small 1 gallon glass carboys for mead and testing beer recipes at small scale, and they are pretty easy to handle at that size. (Stainless all day long at 3gal+, my main fermenter is 7.5 stainless) In addition to doing a more reasonable style like a porter or a pale, a first timer shouldn't be doing a 5 gallon batch IMHO. And kveik ftw if you don't have temp control.

    Great break down. When I first started looking for videos on Home brewing I seen Josh's video first and stopped watching it about 2 minutes in. Couldn't stand his voice or face. Then came across claw hammer videos and was also turned off cause it seemed to be to silly to me. Ultimately I found The brushow and apartment brewer and watched the hell out of their videos. After brewing for a little while I now enjoy watching claw hammer videos cause you guys are silly and I can still pick up great tid-bits of helpful information now that I know more about the names and terms of things related to brewing. Still cant finish watching Josh's video though. lol

    Oh, and glass fermenters are very dangerous to the untrained homebrewer. I have a 3 gallon for making large lager starters and a 6 gallon never used but on standby for mixed fermentation.

    LOVE THIS VIDEO!!! I see that French dude copying the Grocery store ingredients home brew; has millions of views... We ALL know that was Barley and the Hops TV and several people have tried the same thing but NO ONE wanted to plug his channel. Bearded and Bored was the only dude that didnt try to take credit for someone elses work.
    Ballistic BBQ ALWAYS lets people know where he got the recipe or idea from as well.
    Its classless to steal someone else's work and not point your finger in the direction you took it from. Guga does that sh*t too. Like he knew WTF a fondant potato was before he watched Chef John.

    In Josh's defense. His video is more ideal for beginners as it does not get very technical and it covers most of the basics. When I first started brewing I didn't really care for the technical aspect of brewing until I actually started brewing.

    Although not intended, this video comes across a bit like 'sour grapes'. I mean, with 6.5M subscribers he could literally do a video on taking a dump and it would race to the top of the 'charts'. As @thebrusho says, he has an opportunity to introduce this beautiful thing we love called 'homebrewing' to so many more people and that can only be a good thing. These people can then refine and hone their skills by watching quality homebrewing channels like yours, to produce the best beer they can. Love your channel ...

    I've been a homebrewer for 3 years and still haven't acquired a taste for saison, they just not for me. Also glass carboys are amazing, I would highly recommend provided you are paranoid about safety. They clean super easy with chemicals such as caustic, and are completely immune to pretty much all chemicals which plastic and even steel aren't. Take care of your carboy and it will literally last forever

    I think the video was a nice introduction but I agree, even the best saison ever can be funky and yeasty and people who drink mainly macro lagers might think that they messed up. Besides that I think the video is mainly positive for homebrewing as a whole.

    Lot of weird comments... Fanboys of this guy? Never heard of him for beer or cooking. I watch a lot of both cooking and beer videos. Just searched and he comes up 3rd now. Yes, a LOT of not great advice from a complete novice. I wouldn't recommend his video either. My first TH-cam video was John Palmer how to brew all grain beer because when I used to use extract, TH-cam didn't exist... AOL was just starting to send out floppy disks.
    Also saison kick ass. Problem is most Americans grew up on shitty beer and then blew their palettes out on hops. Doesn't help that every brewery I visit is a dozen IPA and a couple stouts. I guess that's this one guys saving grace is he picked a much better style.
    And no to glass carboys.

    My issue with Joshua’s vid is that he is making homebrewing look like a walk in the park, which already isn’t if you have great equipment, imagine then with a stove top, glass fermenter, bottle conditioning (with saison yeast!).
    There’s a specific main process to follow and that one, granted, is not complicated, it’s straightforward and repetitive. But to make GOOD beer, there’s way more to that. And as a longtime home/pro brewer I don’t want people thinking “oh yeah, that’s pretty easy, huh?” and they can do what I do because they watched Joshua’s go at homebrewing like it was done 30 years ago. Also, I can’t put my money on that beer having turned out great. Why? Let’s face it, first time brews are - most of the time - “meh” at most. And the dude is not even a beer drinker, how can I take his word at knowing if that saison turned out like a saison should turn out? At the end of the day, even if he KNOWS the beer sucks he can’t just dump it down the drain in front of 3 million viewers, can he?
    So yeah, maybe next time, if he wants to “teach” hot to homebrew, he should invite someone more experienced to participate on his video. And maybe, at least, some recommendations to all of the amazing brew tubers out there wouldn’t be bad either. Cheers!

  • @bruce-le-smith
    @bruce-le-smith 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    maybe he doesn't like beer 'cause he started with a homemade saison haha. some of the local micro and nano brewers round my parts have made some very light saisons with a lot of finesse, but I can't imagine achieving that as a new homebrewer! for me it was that spicy/sharp flavour profile, often completely overbearing. sort of like trying to eat hot peppers for the first time, something you should do by using a tiny amount mixed in with the right food.

    Sorry, my 6 glass fermenters have served me well for 30 years now - I’m not going to landfill them and buy new plastic or imported stainless product just cause glass is passé. Cheers to those recycling used ones.
    If you want to do a video for new brewers getting into the hobby, how about one on being resourceful finding used equipment. People are giving up on homebrewing as fast as they are entering - yet everyone buys a new setup? Maybe that video will rank #2 to JW?

  • @chrisgeo1642

    Ok, so there are definitely worse home brew videos on TH-cam both in production and information. He gets mostly everything right but makes some assumptions and attempts to talk from an authority he doesn’t really have. I personally do not like Saison no judgement to those that do but I like beer flavored beer and doing a pale or blonde ale for a beginner video is probably the better route and room temp fermentation is fine for either. However if it’s a hobby that bites you then after a brew or two you will be looking for a mini fridge or other means of temp control I think I had three brews under my belt before I jumped into temp control and fancy fermenters. I am still using the same kettles because they work but one day I’ll probably pull the trigger on a claw hammer.

    Every tap has an aerator in it these days to save water. When topping up the bucket the cold water is already aerated. Also none of the extract or BIAB kit recipes ever mentioned aeration. I would say the aeration is only needed when you boil the entire 23l batch in a AIO brewer or something similar.

    • @matthewedon
      @matthewedon 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Even if half the water in your fermenter is fresh out of the faucet and aerated, the other half you just boiled will be almost devoid of oxygen. Why not aerate and make sure the yeast have all the O2 they need? There's no downside and can only benefit the fermentation.
