Good chat! 1980 is a great stopping point. The BBs were touring concert leaders with the transition to stadiums in the 70's. The core audiences were in or entering their 30's. Digital technology hit the studios in the late 70's and CD's in 82. The industry was changing. Everybody was growing up. Hippies and protesters became business people. Drugs changed from mind expansion to getting wasted. There was the good and the not so good!

Hi Steve. I’m up to page 172 of the book. Some quick interesting observations:
Al played bass on a lot of songs; Dennis eventually added a second cymbal to his live Camco kit early ‘65, still no audio recordings of Glen Campbell “live”, when he was touring with them , a picture of Dennis (page154) behind the kit with a mic to sing while drumming which I never saw him ever do live before. Brian used to play drums when Dennis sang “The Wanderer” in ‘64, so I’m intrigued.
Bruce played electric piano on his first two shows, cool (Al must have played bass ).

Thanks for sharing the observations, Vincent! Good eye, too, on spotting the mic next to Dennis on page 154. (I hadn't noticed and just checked it out after reading your comment.) Wonder how he was using it? Surely, he wasn't doing backing vocals while drumming? The book is surprisingly jam-packed with stuff, so there are, undoubtedly, plenty of things I still haven't caught. Thanks again for passing those items along and great to hear from you, Vincent!

Yes! That documentary should be interesting. We'll have to "wait and see," of course. Like the book, I expect it'll be a "celebration of the band," rather than a hard-hitting expose, which is fine. I guess my main hope is that they've dug up some great film/video footage that we haven't seen too often before, rather than going back to the clips we've all seen zillions of times. Great video as usual, and a lovely photo of Bruce and Keith Moon in the new book. In the early 70s when Dennis was out of it because of his hand injury? Keith Moon actually considered joining The Beach Boys. He was a big fan. I think "Don't worry baby" was on Keith's first solo album "Two sides of the moon".

Thanks for the mention of Keith Moon's love of the Beach Boys and his cover version of "Don't Worry Baby." (Can you imagine Mike Love having to deal with Keith Moon in the band!?) Coincidentally, just yesterday I ran across a very funny advert that ran in Billboard in 1974 to promote Keith's version of the song which has him dressed as a "surfer" posed next to a woodie. (I'm planning to show it, and talk about his version of the song, in an episode sometime in May.) Thanks again for the feedback and have a great week, John!

I was aware months ago that this book was forthcoming due to being a prior purchaser of books from Genesis, however, they are usually very limited autographed editions of only a couple of hundred copies and always cost well over $400 or so plus are expensive to ship from the UK.
My problem was that this book was announced by Genesis about the same time as a similar book on CSN&Y and I chose that one over The Beach Boys book, mainly because of the expense of getting both.
I was overjoyed to learn later that this book would be available from Amazon and I immediately pre-ordered it. I’ve just started reading it but it is a welcome addition to my Beach Boys library.

(So limited that he even missed out on it!) I know it was autographed by some of the members, but don't remember any of the other particulars. (I'm sure it was well out of my price range anyway!)
I didn't know about the CSN&Y book. If it isn't too terribly expensive, I'll want to see if I can get a copy of that too!

Though they seemed to be in fine form last year, I'm definitely aware that there are going to be limited opportunities to see them. (And while it's not the really "the Beach Boys," those songs are still great to hear live and it's nice to see Mike and Bruce.) The Japan early ‘66 tour has another strange picture of Mike holding his mic so Dennis can sing while on drums.
I agree this had to be the Dennis spotlight song he got to sing live. In 1963-4 it was The Wanderer with Dennis out front and Brian on drums. My guess is the 65 tour he must have been singing and possibly drumming to Do you wanna dance (that picture in the book of the mic stand placed next to Dennis while drumming. Perhaps in the early 66 through at least October 66, Mike stood next to Dennis at times in lieu of using a mic stand as Dennis continued to do his spotlight DYWDance.
By Michigan 66 Dennis is up front doing You’ve got to hide your love away.
I think in 1967 live shows there is no Dennis spotlight song (haven’t heard one yet). Of course 1968 tour he was up front for Little Bird and Friends.

Misc. comments: The book is OVERWHELMING -- in scope, physical size, cost, and the herculean accomplishment of pulling together from minutiae of 60-plus years. Kudos to the effort that DB goes into, while trying to help summarize this seminal published achievement!
Good point about the book's cover representing the mid-career pivot point (Good Vibes). Were the BBs the ORIGINAL "hippies" ? Possibly, by Carl Wilson's comment, early on in their musical career, as DB mentions. (Try as I might, I spent hours searching the entire book for it, and failed to find it. I'm sure it's there, somewhere.)
I particularly liked Carl's comment (p. 175) regarding "Barbara Ann" -- a song I've just never liked. CW called it "the BANE of my existence." Brian somewhat deprecatingly termed it as "not even a produced record." Without saying anything specific about its chart success, I'm quite sure Mikey loved the revenue stream (even w/o a writing credit.) In my perfect world, BA would have barely charted, while "The Little Girl I Once Knew," which John Lennon adored, would have been a # 1.
I agree w/ DB that the "living presence" of the core 6 members, with each individual's "voice," makes it special. Much more could be, and likely, WILL be said regarding this milepost tome, but that's it from me for now.
Thanks for ALL you do for us, Steve.

"Overwhelming" is a good term! On first glance after I opened it, I thought I'd find less there than it at first appeared. The pages are laid out so neatly that it fooled me. There's actually much more there than I thought and, of course, I'm continuing to pick up on things I hadn't noticed. Whoever did the layout deserves credit for getting so much stuff into a fairly "uncluttered" looking arrangement. (That "hippy" comment by Carl was certainly one of the surprises too!) Thanks for the feedback, Bill, and glad to know that you're enjoying the book too!

Well Steve and David , i am happy to report that the Beach Boys are everywhere in the UK at the moment, because i have just purchased a new TV and it seems that everytime i flick through the many channels, i seem to see the group either playing or in a Rockumentary and they are particularly prominant on SKY ARTS and indeed last week i managed to see the Brian is Back Rockumentary from 1976 in full for the very first time and i had heard so much about this from Mike when he was talking to Roger Scott , but as far as i know it had never previously been seen in UK up until now and its terrific to see the whole thing rather than the clips used in other vids.
Along with this SKY ARTS have shown various other Rockumentaries about Dennis and the groups visit to London which i assume was from around 1968 by the looks of things and i dont have listings for Sky Arts, so its a happy coincidence to see the group represented so well here.
Then we come to Radio Caroline that has a listeners top 15 show daily in which a listener takes control of their output for an hour of their favorite tracks and many feature the Beach Boys quite regularly and many of their most obscure tracks can be heard , the other day someone chose Cool Cool Water to be included and someone else chose Wake the World all a welcome change to the usual output that most radio stations favour,
I think its great that full respect has been given to Blondie and Ricky, simply because they changed the sound of the group completely at a time when the whole structure of rock music was changing and thats not to say that their earlier sound was bad, but that the change was needed for them to remain contempary and both of these South African Musicians did this and until now have been underrated.
And as for Keith Moon, its a well known fact that he would insist that his Beach Boys Collection would travel with him on tour and he would corner anyone in sight into listening to their albums, so to see Bruce and Keith together comes as no surprise.
With all this in mind, this book will do well in UK as anything Beach Boys always does.

Wow! Thanks for the info on SKY ARTS. Sounds like some great content and some stuff I wish would be aired here! (With all the "singing contests," "reality shows," and bigfoot/UFO/Loch Ness monster/treasure hunting "documentaries" on US TV, there ought to be room for some decent rock/Beach Boys content!
I definitely agree about Blondie and Ricky and their impact on the group. (The "Blondie and Ricky" period would make a great full-length documentary on its own.)
Thanks for the info on Keith Moon. I knew he was in a band called "The Beachcombers" before the Who and was a long-time Beach Boys/Jan & Dean fan. (I also remember reading, somewhere long ago, about him repeatedly playing the "wacky" "Filet of Soul" side four of "The Jan & Dean Anthology," repeatedly, in a hotel somewhere on tour and driving everyone crazy.)
BTW, for some reason, today, your comments didn't come up on my notifications. Since I always look for your comments and you're so reliable, I was, quite literally, worried. So happy to see you're here!

Great to hear from you, Chris! I think the Keith Moon obsession with the BBs & their music is particularly intriguing. I could definitely see parallels between KM & Dennis, but Bruce? (Opposites attract, I guess.) In my limited understanding (lots of reading over multiple decades) I attribute a lot of the BBs' sustained popularity in the UK to Moon, Johnston, and Derek Taylor, in getting the word out. Also, the inimitable & beloved Roger Scott. The book even has a long quote from Pete Townshend, who really wasn't a fan until post-Pet Sounds.

    • @chrisrainbow2393
      @chrisrainbow2393 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@@burlingtonbill1 Yes the KM and Bruce sure was an odd combination and i suppose it may have been a chance meeting of the two musicians , maybe KM was at a BB concert as we know that Bruce famously toured UK promoting Pet Sounds which included the Beatles , so maybe this also included the WHO and various others around at the time .
There have been a few other odd combinations as i remember that apparantly members of Pink Floyd were once seen together enjoying a curry at an Indian Restaurant around the Abbey Road era although i expect lots of people claimed to have been friends with the Beatles , but this was something i read in a book, also Englebert Humperdink was great friends with Jimi Hendrix as Hendrix was said to admire Humps music , strange as that may sound..
As they say, There are non so strange as folk hahaha. Great to talk to you Bill and thanks for the great feedback.
