What a great guy!, so full of love and enthusiasm for Carl and Billy and for the entire Beach Boys family. I would love to spend an hour or two with Michael having a few pints of beer at my local pub. I will certainly check out his site and get into his music. It's a tragedy that Billy didn't get to finish his book, I'm sure with the amount of touring he did from an early age with his own family then with the Beach Boys he would have a lot of interesting stories to tell. Its also great to know that Michael was friends with Audrey. Once again Steve you've risen to the occasion with another special episode.

@@thebeachboysbasementwithst6444 Don't know how much you follow Giggens, and all the videos he posts. For maybe the last month or so, he started a series, which he calls "What if Wednesdays" (Which, of course, he posts on Wednesdays). In his most recent one, he talks about a story in Rolling Stone magazine, where Al Jardine is talking about bringing back Brian's backing band, to once again perform/give concerts. According to Al in the story, he talked it over with Brian, and he said Brian gave Al his blessing in using the name "The Brian Wilson Band", featuring Al as the singer. Wondering if you've heard anything about this?

I went to quit a few Jan & Dean concerts in the 90's and got Jan's signature many times. I also have gotten other signatures of musicians over the years but I can't even imagine being actual friends with them. Some of the best singers of all time have sung in the bathroom at some point in their life and career. Didn't Weird Al record a song in the bathroom early in his career? Nice pull, Steve. You never know what might happen just by taking a few minutes to reach out and ask. Michael's enthusiasm and genuine love for Carl and Billy is pouring out of this interview. BTW, I think the bass player that Michael refers to during the Hawthorne BB Monument is likely Randall Kirsch who plays in the California Surf, Inc., band with Bobby Figueroa (long time BB bassist Ed Carter is also in the band, but I believe he plays guitar as far as I'm aware.) Looking very much forward to hearing more about Ed Carter's prominent role in "The Beach Boys In Concert" episode next week.

1:28 "I'm sure Carl's in there..." I complained in my comment last week about not being able to hear CW, or the backing vocals in general, on another song. It begs the question: what's the point if you can barely hear it? Sorry to be cranky about it, but it makes me cranky... 7:19 Sailor had been utterly unknown to me until now...interesting stuff about Bruce etc. Curious to know the unhappy back story there... 8:45 J W Guercio is a billionaire?? Huh. Who knew? I just Wiki'd him: "In 1977, Guercio and Chicago parted ways after the band discovered that his contract was paying him 51% of profits, with the other 49% shared between the eight band members." I guess that's how you get to be a billionaire... Are you and your family beagle-owners, or is that just a cute tee to wear? We had Basset Hounds when I was a kid, Maggie followed by Maude... Another good vid, Steve. I'd say it's a lot more than just "interesting to watch." I dig your impeccable research, I dig all of the arcane factoids. Man, you're really the jacket...!

It really surprises me that anybody gets Carl Wilson to sing on their record and then puts him in some nondescript chorus of "oohs and aahs" or mixes him so low that you can't hear him. It definitely seems to defeat the point of having one of the all-time great voices on your record. That Sailor booklet seems like it was written with a good deal of "snark" and underlying axes to grid (like the unexplained part about "carrying on unhappily.") I'm sure there's a story behind it all but, to tell the truth, I'm not sure I find Sailor compelling enough research it. Glad you noticed the t-shirt! My childhood dog was part Beagle. The real reason I got it, though, was that I happened to be looking at the back cover of Barry Manilow's "Trying To Get The Feeling" album recently, where he's posed with a dog and wearing a t-shirt like that. I found one on-line and thought it was a funny and highly-obscure reference. (Who knew somebody would be making those!?) Coincidentally, my good friend, Frank, adopted a beagle puppy right after I taped the episode. Spooky! (Makes me glad I didn't wear a "vicious attack dog" t-shirt!) I haven't been called the jacket before! Thanks and right back at 'cha! (Thanks for the laugh too!) Have a great week, rangergrrrl!

Found out about the Michael Angeloff album/CD through the BBFun newsletter, which I was getting at the time, and mentioned Carl's involvement with it. In their mentioning of Michael's CD, his address and phone number were given, for those who wanted to order the CD from him. I did call him and spoke with him. Great episode , Steve . Once again I have nothing to add . I know when I’m out of my era and depth ! I do have a seasonal story to offer , however . We were out to dinner last night and I had my usual “ oldies “ channel on satellite radio in the car . As we are nearing Halloween , a suitably creepy song was being played . I glanced at the screen and it read John Zacherle as the artist and “ Dinner With Drac “ as the song . I honestly have no recollection of Zacherle ever making novelty records . I only remember Bobby ( Boris ) Pickett & The Crypt Kickers , who were frequently covered by The Beach Boys in their fall concerts . 👻

Yes! "Dinner With Drac" isn't heard very often these days! I only learned about it from perusing Top 40 books. Apparently, it went to #6 in the spring of 1958 (not even at Halloween time!) Being curious about it, I downloaded a copy (and it's a lot of fun.) I don't think I've ever heard it on the radio! I'm surprised it doesn't end up getting played more around Halloween especially, as you point out, there aren't a lot of Halloween-themed hits outside of "Monster Mash." Steve. I have really enjoyed these podcasts and all your research on Carl. Right now I'm doing a bucket list Amtrak ride to California from Utah. Looking at the Nevada desert really makes me melancholy thinking about all the music we've missed from Carl the past 26 years since he died. He was such a treasure. I never met him, but saw him in concert a dozen times or so. I really feel like I knew him. He will always be missed. Great job once again. Lamont

Well said. Like you, I never met him. Between the times I saw him in concert, the interviews I've seen and read, what others have said about him, and, of course, his music, I, too, really have the sense of "knowing" Carl on some level. We lost a warm and singular personality, plus many more years of great music that we should have had, when Carl passed. I agree; he was a treasure. Thanks, as always, for the great feedback, Lamont, and enjoy your Amtrak ride! The scenery must be phenomenal! I envy you!

Another great episode Steve. So much that I did not know about Carl. He was very busy later on in life. “Like A Brother” has some nice music on it. I look forward to that episode. Jason Scheff was great with Chicago wish he never left. His son was very ill and he could not tour with them so he left. Apparently Lamm can be a prick just like Don Henley. Check out the documentary on Chicago “ Now more than ever”. Also Jason’s dad Jerry is one of the greatest bass players of all time. He drove Elvis live band along with the great Ronnie Tutt on drums. Give a listen to Jerry going off on “ Polk Salad Annie “ live MSG 1972.

Great episode series dedicated to Carl Wilson guest appearances. Like you said, it really gives you a sense of the circles Carl ran in. Every time I think about Carl's passing, I always wonder if we would have gotten such a big solo career from Brian or did we miss out on more Beach Boys stuff with Brian involved. Anyway, Great job Steve! P.S. On a side note, I did watch Sting Of Death. It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Although it was still what one would consider bad. The video quality was pretty good. The other movie on the disc was pretty rough though. Of course, the monsters costume was pretty ridiculous. I did play the commentary track with the director. The way he tells it, Neil Sedaka was in town for nightclub shows. Somebody from the movie asked him if he would do a song for a movie for a couple thousand dollars and the rest is history, as they say. I was glad I picked it up, so thanks. Maybe I'll review it sometime. Thanks for everything as always.

Excellent question about the effect Carl's passing had on Brian's career trajectory. Along with Melinda coming in (and Landy going out), I'm sure it was a huge influence. I've got to imagine by the mid-90s, Carl was the only real link between Brian and Mike & company. I'm sure it made it easier for Brian to really sever ties. On the other hand, likely we'd have gotten more "Beach Boys" involvement from Brian if Carl had still been there. Very interesting to ponder! Thanks for the follow-up on "Sting of Death!" Great to know the DVD came with a commentary track. (I love commentary tracks and think I'll go ahead and order it, knowing that it has one.) In any case, thanks for the info on Neil Sedaka's involvement! Great to know and I'm looking forward to a full review of "Sting of Death" from you sometime! Thanks, Michael!

Your comment on the Robert Lamm album cover sent me back to check if the art director or photographer were the same as on Brian's album. The group Sailor were very popular here in UK for a while in the mid 70s , but they came and went very quickly and until now, i hadnt realised their BB connection . They first were heard singing about a Great Big Worldwide Traffic Jam , which was a moderate hit, though i dont think it charted, but was very much a turntable hit in 1974, but after Sailor appeared on Top of the Pops in 1975 was when things really happened for them with a huge NO1 with A Glass of Champaign which showed the group dressed as Royal Navy Sailors complete with striped shirts and Oxford Bags ( very wide baggy trousers that were about 24 inches wide with high waistband with three buttons ) their shirts were different from the BBs as Sailors went across rather than up and down as with the BBs and if you are aware of the Rubettes from the same period, they looked very similar with some members wearing berets and i think one had an eyepatch.. This was followed by their most played hit Girls Girls Girls which is still played today, but after that, Sailor vanished from our charts and screens , though, as you say, they were still popular across Europe , along with the Rubettes and i believe a lot of this was because at that time the competition was very strong here in UK and we tended to be moving away from the bubblegum music by Sailor, Rubettes , Bay City Rollers, Slik etc in favour of the new and outragious Punk Music and of course Disco

Thanks for the feedback and the info on Sailor, and on the Rubettes, who I hadn't heard of before. I just looked them up in my book that compares the US and UK Top Twenty. I see they hit the UK Top Twenty five times; four in 1974 and once each in '75 and '77, compared to Sailor hitting twice; both times in 1976. I also took a look at the timing of hits by the Bay City Rollers and Slik. I notice that none of them had anything in the Top Twenty later than 1977. It certainly seems to confirm, as you point out, that they were pushed out in favor of disco and/or punk. I’m glad you mentioned Sailor’s outfits! Based on the photos included in the “Anthology” CD I picked up, they were definitely not shy about costumes and artwork with nautical themes. With all the sailor/pirate/gondolier outfits they’re shown wearing in the CD booklet, they come across as sort of a “sea-going-themed” Kiss (with a light pop sound, of course.) Thanks, again, for the UK perspective, Chris!

    1. Regarding Steely Dan and their polished sound, I'll never forget buying a half-speed mastered vinyl copy of Gaucho and being absolutely floored by the sound quality - so clean, vibrant and nearly three dimensional. I later got a DTS CD of the album in surround sound, but I heard an improved, different mix came out, which I never got. I like Aja better, and I was able to see the band perform the entire album in concert, but it sadly never came out in surround sound because some of the multitracks were lost. Perhaps that could be rectified with today's technology. 2. All in all, superb research and commentary in this series.

It's funny to me that, "back in the day," when "Aja" material was all over the radio, I enjoyed it but didn't really take in how good it was. It wasn't until the 80s that I really began to appreciate it. I think it was simply because, when it was all over the place, I figured it couldn't possibly be "anything special." Now, I look back and marvel that a record that good was also that popular! Glad you enjoyed the series, Joel! 8:30 So...I paused the vid and opened a new tab to listen to the unknown-to-me Honey Bee, and I swear to Gawd--I could not hear any backing vocals on the song...AT ALL. (Are there stripped-down alt versions?) Tried a different vid, and I was pressing my headphones to my ears and leaning toward my laptop and straining to make out what might've been those CW vocals on the chorus. Is there something wrong with me? My hearing? My headphones? Both? This reminds me of our convo about not really being able to hear CW on "Desperadoes..." by Warren Zevon. Aggravating...but that was a great rundown of Wildflowers. Btw the first vid I watched had the lyrics onscreen, and, as I followed along, my mind drifted to the obv similar lyrics on the BBs song Wild Honey. (Hmm, I wonder how many popular songs have used the sticky-sweet-sting honey bee metaphor etc? Lots, prob.) Maybe this thematic echo is what led Petty to ask Carl to be on it...? Ramble: I recall Petty and BW appearing together in at least one scene in the pretty good doc Echo in the Canyon. Petty had always spoken highly of BW, and it must've pleased him to work with CW...however ineffectually. Later, Jakob Dylan and Beck and others are sitting around a large coffee table covered in LPs from the period, talking about their impact...and Wild Honey is among them. Buzzzzzzzzzzz.... 10:42 Van Go Gan is an amusing play on words...like a clever NYT crossword puzzle answer... 11:20 I'm ashamed to admit that I've been a near-suicidal chain smoker of clove cigs for years. The smell seeps into everything you wear and own. (Fun fact: the walls of my apt are the same shade of yellow as my teeth. Sexy!) Cloves smell considerably less awful than domestic cigs, but smoke is still smoke. I take it you're wise enough to be a non-smoker...? 12:58 She's the One had utterly evaporated from my mind. Never saw it, would never have remembered Petty's association with it. Whatever happened to Edward Burns? He was supposed to be the next Woody Allen--but Woody Allen as an Eddie Bauer model. I'm not even going to bother to Wiki him. I guess he wasn't the one...

The backing vocals on "Honey Bee" are very slight: just "Aaaah" behind the vocals on the choruses. I know there was a "deluxe" Wildflowers set released a few years ago. I don't have it. It might contain a different mix or two, which might have been what you came across. When I first heard a deluxe set was coming, I was hoping it might contain additional material with Carl but, fortunately, someone here let me know there wasn't and saved me a chunk of money! It could be the "Wild Honey" connection that made Petty think of Carl for it. I hadn't thought of that! I've never been a smoker but I like the smell of clove cigarettes (at least, if it's not too intense.) For some reason, they always remind me of college. I didn't know anyone who smoked them, but that scent always seemed to be around. I have good associations with it. I had forgotten about Edward Burns too. I was kind of glad he came up in this episode since I thought it made it seem very "mid/late 90s" to have him mentioned. (My wife and I saw him in "Brothers McMullin" on, probably, our third date in 1995.) Good question on whatever became of him! I might get ambitious enough to look up his wiki page one of these days! Bob Welch - Wow, taking me back! The French Kiss album was one of my favorites back in the day, especially the tune "Sentimental Lady." So I had to have a listen to a few of the songs off of Eye Contact - "Bernadette" caught my eye (that's my wife's name.) I had to see if Bob was revisiting the Four Tops classic (with James Jamerson's great bass playing) or if it was different - definitely different, and not a bad pop tune. Tom Petty "Honey Bee" - LOVE the tune. Man, that swampy guitar riff is the bee's knees! ;) I agree that Carl is wasted here, but am so glad he's on "Hung Up and Overdue." "I Should Have Known It" from Mojo has that same "mojo" as "Honey Bee." I've become a huge TP fan over the past several years - his catalog is incredible. A few years ago my son's cover band was known for playing a lot TP material, including "I Should Have Known it." A couple who were big fans of his band (and were HUGE Tom Petty fans, and had seen him in concert dozens of times over the years) gave my son and the lead singer tickets their tickets to Tom's upcoming concert at the time. Well, that show at The Hollywood Bowl (tragically) turned out to be Tom's final show.

I agree about "Honey Bee." Great track! I'd love to know why Carl ended up on it though. It seems like he could have been used to better effect almost anywhere else. (It might be that Carl just wanted to sing on it, which would be understandable. It would have been fun to be part of, I'm sure, even if he ended up lost in the mix.) Sadly, I never saw Tom Petty in concert. He was one of those guys I always figured I could "catch next time." Like with Carl, Tom Petty's death was a real shock and surprise. Both were guys that I thought had many years ahead of them and would be the ones "left to tell the tale" when many of their peers had passed. To quote Chuck Berry, "It goes to show you never can tell." It should be a lesson to me to get out and see artists while they're still performing (and while I still can!) The fact that his voice was so much in demand by all these wonderful mucisians confirms what we've all known on here since the days of "Girl don't tell me, "God only knows", 'Wild Honey" ,"Darlin", "Heaven", and so many other great songs, that Carl Wilson had a voice of an angel.

Another great episode, Steve! It's cool that you went into the history of Bob Welch as I feel that he's an unsung hero in music history. I remember when I discovered his era of Fleetwood Mac after only knowing of the hits one, I was totally fascinated and felt that the five albums he was a member for are important to the band's discography, 'Bare Trees' is probably the strongest as the combined talents of him, Danny Kirwan and Christine McVie produced a real well-rounded album that unfortunately wasn't able to be elaborated on as Kirwan left the band after the tour for it. The two of them were great guitarists and the interplay between them was really solid. The album 'Mystery To Me' is probably the 'Rumours' of the Welch era in terms of a strong, almost commercial sounding album and yet again building on that was thwarted, this time by the lead guitarist Bob Weston's affair with Mick Fleetwood's wife. 'Heroes Are Hard To Find' showed signs of the Buckingham/Nicks direction, but at that point Welch had enough of the band's drama, understandably so. But it was Welch that led them into the more mainstream rock style they found success with and it was his suggestion they move to LA that put them in the position to meet Buckingham and Nicks, so had Welch was quite the bridge to their success as none of it would've happened without him. It's too bad his solo career never took off like it should've, but at least his albums have integrity. And on the Tom Petty front: using Carl so sparingly was criminal. He could've enhanced the quality of 'Wildflowers' so much more. It's really sad that Petty didn't have the big picture mentality to see that. Also: I'm going to wrap up our Beatles discussion from the previous video comments real quick as to not comment on two videos at the same time. I think the Capitol albums are interesting from a historical standpoint, and also a few of them ('Meet The Beatles', 'Beatles '65', 'Beatles VI' and the US configuration of 'Rubber Soul') are actually stronger albums than their UK counterparts in my opinion as the less number of tracks on them ensure the 11 tracks present are the strongest. I think the whole 14 song rule of the UK albums forced the band to put more filler on the albums than they would've had they only put 11-12 on them. I'm still not dishing out the money for that vinyl boxed set though, that is them wringing money out of the devoted Beatles fans. I'm still kind of disenchanted at the how elaborate and expensive those 'Mind Games' sets were, especially that ridiculous ultimate box with all the extra trinkets and 20 different pieces to it. But, I don't know if you've seen yet: there's going to be a deluxe edition of George's 'Living In The Material World' coming out soon, which I think isn't one of his strongest albums. We'll see how much that one ends up costing. Thanks once again for giving me topics to expound on, Steve!!

Thanks for the thoughts on the Bob Welch-era of Fleetwood Mac. When I was first listening to FM rock in the 70s, there was, of course, nearly constant play of the Buckingham-Nicks-era albums. I'd also occasionally hear some Peter Green-era tracks, but it seems like the whole early 70s era was skipped. I heard "about" Bob Welch having been in Fleetwood Mac long before I ever heard any of those albums. (Of course, it was a real treat when I finally did!) I know what you mean about being "disenchanted" with the expensive "Mind Games" set. As I mentioned, it's the first time I passed on the deluxe set of a Beatles group or solo release. I just can't see spending that kind of money for, basically, a bunch of remixes. (If it had been four or five discs of outtakes, I'd probably have gone ahead.) I hadn't heard about the "Living In The Material World" set, but I should have known it was coming! I agree that it's not one of his strongest albums. Wonder if we'll get anything new apart from remixes. I don't suppose we'll ever get releases like the "John Lennon Anthology" or "The Beatles Anthology" sets again. I suspect there's a lot of unreleased George Harrison recordings "in the vaults" but it seems like they're going to ration them out over years as "bonus tracks" while making us repeatedly re-buy the studio albums in ever more expensive box sets. (Sorry to sound so pessimistic!) At the very least, it really makes me appreciate the recent Beach Boys box sets being so rich in previously unreleased material. They may be getting expensive, but, at least, I feel like I'm getting something for my money! A "long response" once again! Sorry about that, Mike! Thanks for the great feedback!

@@thebeachboysbasementwithst6444 I apologize if I overexplained the history of the Bob Welch era too much. I think it's very interesting to ponder because the band's history does seem to go from the Peter Green era right to the Buckingham/Nicks mega-success period with Welch's work criminally overlooked. And: yes! I agree with you on the format of those boxed sets. If they were outtakes or sessions like the Pet Sounds or Smile or the newer Beach Boys boxes, they would be much more interesting and worth the money invested. I feel that the while the Beatles super deluxe editions that have come out deliver those session highlights, they kind of skimp on them too. And with Harrison: I don't know how many outtakes there are as I feel after 'All Things Must Pass', he cleared out his backlog of songs and just wrote a certain number to order to fill an album like Lennon did. I get the impression that he was pressured to finish 'Living In The Material World' as it had been three years since his last album and he rushed it and the quality suffered. I'm actually more interested in a 'Dark Horse' or 'Extra Texture' set as the latter is one of my favorite albums and is pretty underrated. His estate though is a more reasonable with the presentation of his material than the Lennon camp is, so the newest set should at least be interesting. I will be streaming it and not purchasing it though. Thanks again for another insightful response, Steve!!

@@novim9 No worries on the Bob Welch comments! I don't know the era that well and appreciate the info. After reading your comments, I checked out the upcoming "Living In The Material World" set. Like the "Mind Games" box, it seems to have one disc of alternate takes, plus an alternate version of "Sail Away Raymond" with The Band that George put together for the "Ringo" album. I'm seeing the deluxe set listed for $175. It's basically the same two discs: the album and the outtakes, that come on the $32 double CD, except that, with the box you also get them on vinyl and blu ray and in a big box with booklets. The two disc set doesn't seem to include "Sail Away Raymond." I'd love to have it, but not at the $143 difference between the double CD and the box set. (Actually, now that I think of it, $32 for a double CD only seems reasonable by comparison to the box!) BTW, I very much agree that I'd rather hear "Dark Horse" and "Extra Texture" deluxe sets and I absolutely agree that "Extra Texture is underrated! Thanks, as always, for the follow-up, Mike!

@@thebeachboysbasementwithst6444 Yes. I was just looking at the "Living In The Material World" box more closely as well and it seems to have a moderate amount of bonus material, which makes the double CD seem the more adequate choice and the deluxe set a little superfluous as the extras aren't super essential. They probably purposely kept 'Sail Away Raymond' off the two disc as an incentive for people to get the deluxe, which is kind of lame. The booklets are usually cool, but nothing you would really look at after the first read and are more of a collector's thing, which all of us obviously aren't. On the topic of 'Sail Away Raymond': I think a 'Ringo' album set would be nice as have enough of an audience to justify it as that was a really good album, perhaps even better than what his bandmates were doing that year, as George and John's albums in 73 weren't great and I feel it was even more enjoyable than 'Band On The Run'. Maybe a set combining it with 'Goodnight Vienna' with backing tracks and sessions would be a nice addition to the Beatles fan's collections, definitely more exciting than another 'Band On The Run' reissue. On the 'Extra Texture' box topic: I'm sure it will happen, I just hope we don't have to wait five years for it. It should technically be coming out next year as 2025 is it's 50th anniversary, but I doubt that. Thanks again Steve for another great discussion!

@@novim9 Yes! A box set build around "Ringo" and "Goodnight Vienna," potentially, could be great! I agree that a "Dark Horse" set and an "Extra Texture" set will happen eventually. I suspect there are probably some interesting demos in the vaults. (I know one or two have been bootlegged.) I'll bet "33 1/3" also gets the deluxe treatment some time. Wonder if they'll bother with "Somewhere In England" and "Gone Troppo"? Thanks, too, Mike, for a great discussion! (BTW, my copy of the "Mind Games" book arrived yesterday. I've been putting together an episode for the channel and haven't had a chance to look it over yet. I'll let you know!)

Didn't know that Carl had appeared on a Tom Petty album, or Al Jardine on an America album. Always like learning about these "Surprises".

Glad you enjoyed it, Robert! Carl is pretty hard (maybe impossible) to really hear on "Honey Bee." He's much easier to spot on "Hung Up and Overdue." Too bad that one is on "She's The One," which is more obscure in the Petty catalog than "Wildflowers." Always great to hear from you, Robert!

@@thebeachboysbasementwithst6444 Steve, this has nothing really to do with Carl, but by accident, I came across a TH-cam post by someone posting videos under the title Nomad Soundwaves. Watched some of these. In each one, they are claiming that through AI, they're able to create new songs and music of people no longer living. I watched what they did for Elvis. It's a song I'll call "Baby, Come Back" The video shows a record being put on a turntable, then played (The new "Elvis" song) as a couple of young women are shown being waited on in a late 1950s/early 1960s Diner. For a few seconds, some publicity photos are shown from his movie G.I. Blues (1960). The style of the song, and the vocal, sound like they could have come from that time. I also checked out what they did for Janis Joplin and the group Queen. Both I think are pretty good and accurate. Check Nomad Soundwaves out if interested!

Awesome video Steve! I never knew Carl was on any Tom Petty albums, but I guess I shouldn't be too surprised - I know that Petty was a huge Beach Boys fan.

Carl Wilson contributed more to Tom Petty’s “Wildflowers” project than what is covered in this video. Aside from “Honey Bee”, Wilson’s most notable contribution is “Hung Up and Overdue” which was excised from the album when it was pared down to a single disc release. That song features soaring vocals from Wilson particularly on the coda and also contains the tip of the cap lyrically, “She said she’s going to move to California one day. Said she’s going out on safari to stay”. Beyond that the entire “Wildflowers” project was heavily influenced by The Beach Boys’ album “Pet Sounds”, with a slight nod to The Beatles’ single Penny Lane/Strawberry Fields Forever. Petty mentioned in the promotion for the album that he had been spending hours listening to The Beach Boys build tracks in the studio insinuating that he had likely accessed some of their studio session tapes possibly through his friendship with Carl as this was years before Capitol began issuing expansive box sets on The Beach Boys catalogue.

Thanks for the feedback, jl! I did, at least, manage to cover "Hung Up and Overdue" at the end of this episode, talking about its release on "She's The One." Thanks for the additional info on the Petty/Carl Wilson connection. Much appreciated!
