GE washing machine won't spin or drain

- This video is a quick 5 minute guide to inexpensively fixing a washing machine that won't spin or drain water. It is definitely a side step from my Car, Jeep, or Coffee content but hopefully will help someone save some money on a washing machine repair.
Our GE top load washing machine Model GTW680BSJ4WS suddenly broke and would not spin or drain. There were no error codes or any indication that it had a problem, just that it would get to the spin cycle and never would actually spin or try and drain the water.
I determined that if the drain pump failed, this would cause this symptom. The drain pump was $31+tax from Amazon and arrived in 1 day. The repair took less than an hour including the time to manually drain all of the water.

Oh my God. You are a genius, my washer wouldn't spin or drain and I tried everything, see if the pump was clogged, ran diagnostics, tested components. Nothing! Then I saw your video(after watching all the others) and though my pump didn't test bad, I decided to go ahead and spend the 48 bucks. Now with the new pump my washer is working and I'm $800 richer because my wife was on her last nerve after 2 weeks without a machine and want a new one.

Hi - I'm a grandma so this was a lifesaver! $45 part and $10 shipping. Had a little struggle getting the old zip tie off the wiring harness but my washer is working again!!!

Thank you so much. My washer would spin and wash the cloths but when it came to spinning the water out it would just make a noise. Then we had a fully wet balnket that could not be put in the drier. The timing was impeccable of when it happened because we needed to do laundry before leaving on a trip plus tons of laundry that we wait to do till the weekend. This was so frustrating. We had to go to our parents house to do all the laundry. We were there for 9 hours and had to pack at midnight. I saw this video before heading on our trip thinking I'm going to have to buy a new washer when we get back from the trip adding an extra expense. So I thought why not give this part a try.

@@DailyBrewGarage Can I ask for your help its been 2ish days working great have done at least 10 loads, and now I think the washer is having the same problem again! Its spinning through out the wash cycle but when it comes to draining and spinning part the water is not coming out.😓
@@64TTS64 it would be my best guess that something is causing the pump to fail. Maybe bad power (spikes etc...) or possibly a wiring short? It could also be something clogged in the outlet to the pump maybe.

After about 10 loads the washer is doing it again…it will not drain. Any suggestions? When I hold down the ‘Start’ button, the following codes are being displayed: 5: 7: 14: 23: 3: 17: 1: 13: 24.

How much did it cost
I actually had the manual put away. I ended up swapping out the lock switch and the drain pump for a total cost of about $75. No problems since. Thanks again.

I’m driving my husband crazy so I did it myself I’m starting to think this is the piece I need to change because she spins and all but won’t let the water out but all hose are clean so I’m going to look for this pump

I have a 12 dollar battery kerosene pump I’ve used to pump out a washer. Makes it so easy, no mess.

Thank you for uploading this video. What are chances that my washer is the exact same model as yours and has the exact same symptoms you talked about? I’m heading to the parts store tomorrow for a new pump and hopefully it will make the wife and the wallet happy.
The pump I used was listed as a fit for a long list of machines so you may get lucky.

Could a clog be present preventing the pump from operating properly? Sometimes the pump works and other times it doesn’t. Just curious before I remove the pump without having a new pump to replace it with
It would be just a guess but I don't think so. Easy enough to check though just by removing it, only takes about 5 minutes. My bet would be the pump is on its way to full failure.

Honestly, I took a guess as the only logical thing it could be other than a clog.
I just hear a click after the wash cycle. No draining or spinning. Hopefully this'll fix it

@@speedracer175 no, the part is correct as it wouldn't spin or drain. This machine is just junk. Poorly made garbage, issues 3 months after purchase. No more GE products for this family.

I have one the pump is just making a sound as you say an it's not spining are anything just there getting hot so is the pump a have to buy
Were you able to get yours working again?
Mine will start to drain but stop after 5 to 10 seconds I know there is no clog because you get hear it draining at first..Do you think this still be a pump issue..just your idea I know your not here to see it..
If it were me, I would replace the pump. Pretty cheap and easy and worth the gamble in my opinion.
