To me its always been clear. The Underground where metal gear is held is rigged to blow in case of tampering. The first explosion is the main explosive, the second is Metal Gears Nuke. That nuclear explosion has probably been a wakeup call to some governments because by Metal Gear 2, Nuclear Disarmament is in full swing.
I know this late but I think I know why Big boss chooses Africa as his base for outer haven because back in the past there were a young men and children that were struggling so he takes them in and turns them into soldiers and workers to work for him. More like “Do you want to struggle or you can join me and work for me, you will have a home and provide you safely”
MGSV essentially disproves this though, sort of, Big Boss expects the reached African children to become soldiers but Kaz says they'll be educated and reintegrated to society, so unless they decided to stay afterwords Venom Snake wouldn't have moved for that reason
Why, though? You can’t just say things like that without properly explaining your stance and expect people to swallow it down with no problem. Besides, if the first game in the series takes itself seriously, it would make sense to continue that tone in the sequels. Suggesting that the first game takes itself "too seriously" doesn't make sense, considering that as the original, it should set the tone and standard for all that follows.

I've beat this game before and I tried playing it again. Basically got stuck at 4:50 where you need to rocket launcher the Arnold but I have 1 HP and no rations. Tried looking online for ration spots and couldn't find any. And so i have basically rage quit a 1987 game. About 4-5 hours wasted. Thanks for re capping the story though, very helpful in understanding the lore before I play the Solid series again
Yeah but, why would Big boss want to make a nuke? I haven't played the games in a while but i remember Solidus wanted to use one to destroy The patriots AI. Maybe Big boss wanted to do the same

Wow Kojima really went full circle with Ahab. And now I finally understand why all of the recruit names are absurd in MGSV phantom pain. Also something I didn't really think about until now is that the characters you play as in the games is pretty well split up. Snake in Metal Gear, MGS1, MGS4. Raiden in MGS2 and Revengeance. And Big Boss in MGS3, Peace Walker, and MGSV Ground Zeroes. Poor Ahab only got one game, yet arguably suffered the most.
I think the ending where big boss says you were supposed to have been fed false information in my opinion was to slow Snake down to buy time to finish Metal Gear tx55. I also think it was to get rid of Solid Snake since he was a clone created to kill Big Boss

People who think MGS4 was particularly stupid don't know how silly the first two games were.
Aside from some of the enemy names, I fail to understand how this game is "silly." It seems to be a straight spy thriller.
