Thanks a lot for posting this video. Wife and I live on the southern Oregon coast. We not only have lots of beach access but lots of dunes to play in. We get our Rivian in a couple months. I was a little nervous about taking it into soft sand due to its weight, but I feel a lot more confident now. We can’t wait to play in it. Thanks again for the great tips.
Glad it was helpful! I was nervous too. I am actually leaving in a few hours to head BACK to Pismo for this weekend, and will try and stretch my comfort level further, going into the back sand dunes. I now have my Whip Flag mount in place, so I should be good to go! But the weight of the truck was on my mind, but weight in the snow I know helps (having grown up in Wisconsin), so maybe it helps here as well. But even if the weight is a negative factor, it is countered by the truck having insane power, 4 independent motors, and very intelligent traction control that know you are driving in soft sand and makes the right adjustments. Give it a try, let me know how it goes!
Fun watch. I went to Cal Poly so I know that area well, but never even thought about driving along the beach. Really looking forward to getting my Rivian.
I highly recommend it. Warm up your skills along the beach, then head to the back area when you're feeling brave. It is such a great part of the State, love that area.
There are a lot of cars because (1) i filmed in the morning, when people are coming in, (2) to get to the Oceano sand dunes area, where a lot of off-road buggies and ATVs play, you have to drive through this spot, (3) The beach is miles long with only a few access points, so driving allows you to get to spots away from others. In the end, you dont hear a lot of car noise, and if you want to get away from the vehicles passing by, you can go to the North end where no cars are allowed.
Enjoyed your video. As a surf fisherman and beach driver on outer banks of North Carolina you should air down to 12 psi on those tires for best experience. I would follow someone else’s track since they “packed the track “ for you.
Great to see you on PB. I took my Taycan there about 18 months ago just after getting the full PPF. But I totally agree I had sand everywhere. But I drove it 5 miles down the beach a a little ways into soft sand, but you know even at highest suspension it’s super low. My Porsche dealership said they thought I ran into a cat litter when I went in for service and they opened the bottom shields. 😂 I grew up in Oceano so it brought back memories of going into the dunes.
Staun deflators are the very best but pricey and I use them regularly ... my favorite. If don't go that route to a specific pressure, there are very cheap and much faster deflators so can do all four at once to be aired down in a couple minutes.
Thumbs up, GREAT video, very detailed! I will be checking more of your vids as we have a reservation for a R1T. If you ever have chance to test your R1T in the snow I would love to hear about it, as we live in Central WA and winter weather can be treacherous, especially over the passes.
I've had plenty of distractions with kids sports and travel the last few months, but getting back into it now. I should be on pace to put out new videos each week, and I'm going to get into my solar panels and house battery asap. Thanks for watching.
I'd love one of these trucks - they look so cool and have options that fit my lifestyle. I'm a surfcaster and drive on the beach regularly. My number one question... how will the batteries hold up to all the salty sand going to everywhere. My truck is cleaned after each beach trip - the salt sand gets everywhere, places that I cant even washout out. How will the EV and Batteries hold up to this harsh environment??? Its inevitable there will be wet/damp salt sand. Thanks for sharing - Id like to see the cleanup process and the undercarriage after a day on the beach.
Love Pismo, haven't been there for 30 years though. Did they close the dunes that were more inland from the ocean? We ripped our CJ-7 all over those back in the day. Maybe someday we will take our R1S out there.
I don't know what used to be open, but check out the map I show at 13:20, some of the back area is private, some is for ATV only, but I'll be out there in the next week or 3 and will try and show you.
Super cool!! So the last 2 times I’ve been there I seen your truck both times. I was on the day use side last Saturday. I was curious to see what the rivian can do out on the dunes. Also how much juice you would burn riding out there. I have a raptor 660 that I take out there. I did ride the dunes with my Toyota Tundra and I know that your vehicle has to work to be able to ride out on the sand. Don’t know when’s the next time I’ll be out there but if your out there when I’m there I’ll can help with filming if you need a hand. Cool video.
Thanks Charley. Great that you saw me there, and then found the video here. That is a good point about the juice, I am now curious how much I'll burn. It has 300 miles range so I assume I can blast around for the day and be ok. Im sure i will need to work it though to get through that stuff and up those hills. Right now, I'm buying rope, flags, and other toys and should be out there in the next few weeks. I also may get my buddy with his brand new, orange, Bronco to join (not the one in the video but identical one). Ill send you another reply before I go. Have fun out there.
Hey Mark, your Pismo Beach video was worth watching every minute! WELL DONE and WELL EDITED and highly useful for the off roader in the sand. Great use cases. I especially liked seeing how well you went kite 🏄 surfing. But, when are you going to share with your viewers the RIVIAN’s fun in the surf and sand for an outdoors adventurer like yourself but also for your family - the wife, kids and pooc?? Isn't the Rivian meant for the enjoyment of them all and they could lend a hand or two setting up shots, watching the cameras, tripods, etc? Just a thought 😀 or two. Keep on EV TRUCKIN!!
I am editing a 2nd Pismo video right now as we speak, one I shot last weekend, where I do some new things in the sand, and that is the FIRST video ever where my wife was the camera person for 1 of the 2 days of shooting. Everything up until now has been solo. So slowly I am pulling them in! The kids are in this next one as well a little, but more voices and background. But I am going to try a different kind of video soon, where we go camping as a family, and we'll have the whole family in it as my "cast". I first have to convince the wife that $2000 for a tent is a good decision! :) Thanks as always Dan for the comments and the viewing support!
@@marksevlife 👍👍! Tell your wife (and the IRS) the tent, a % of the car, and video equipment, etc., are business expenses that are a part of Mark’s company, EV LIFE, right?? Just a thought but check with your CPA first 😎!
I wonder if you put a 4 way hose splitter on the line if it would inflate the 4 tires to 48 PSI accurately. I wonder if they would almost equalize as it goes up.
What does the truck do when it gets stuck in the sand and it is not in sand mode? Will the tires detection it has no traction and not spin at all? Have you tried using sand mode when stuck? Kind of curious how the software logic works. When I drive thru soft sand in all terrian the truck kept traction and crawled across the sand with no tire spin.
I dont think any mode would ever completely stop your tires from spinning. If you're pressing down on the accelerator the vehicle does need to move the tires, it wont just refuse to respond. With this very fine sand, it only takes a few rotations of the tire to dig you in, so you can get stuck rather quickly. The different modes will try and adjust for "slip" but it cant solve the problem entirely. You could try the "Rock Crawl" mode, that I did not try. I also will say that I was never really that stuck here, I was using the slightly-stuck moment to demonstrate the Recovery Boards. I could have powered out of this hole if I really needed to. Thanks for your comments!
Agreed. It is the level Rivian recommends. Because the Rivian weighs so much, you can imagine that a higher PSI is needed for tire safety. The R1T weighs 7100 lbs where as a Toyota Tacoma is 4000. So i decided to go with Rivians number

A Skydio drone will follow you automatically...perfect for a 1-man show!
Excellent review of one of the many capabilities of the Rivian R1T!
Thanks for the positive feedback.

Since I am not American looking a bunch of cars going into the beach, and no people seems surreal, oneiric in an eerie way.

I appreciate that!
Look forward to Part 2. Can’t wait to see you climb some of those big dunes!
I know, me too! Im order my flag now. But have to coordinate on a weekend when either my wife can be out there with me, or a buddy.

Thanks for the tips! I will go lower if I think I need to, but trying not to strain the tires too much.

Thanks! Will do! I expect the snow to be here in the Sierras by New Year's and we'll book a trip and give it a try.
Great video, Mark!
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it
Would like to see it go through the dunes. Not just through flat sand. Looking forward to the next video !
Next time! It will probably be in 3 weeks ( I can get out there in 2 weeks, and it takes 1 week to edit a video)
@@marksevlife look forward to it. How about taking it out to Glamis and go up competition hill or Oldsmobile ?
Cool. Wish you success.
Thank you very much, appreciate the comments.
You make such good content. Only problem is that there isnt more

Love the BCA shovel, have the same one myself. Did a double take when I saw that lol. You splitboard?
I dont splitboard but would love to. Maybe this year I will.

sand will draw a lot more battery consumption per mile BEWARE expect 25% of normal range on sand
...30psi is not airing down. lol
