Well ofc they can be used even on modern battlefield agaisnt IFVs and infrantry....and if they are modernized, they can be used even against other MBTS.... But Finland made 100% the right decision to scrap most of its T-72s back in the day....only these few were kept in the tank museum for showcases like this. Even Leo 2A4 was in every way superior to T72 and ofc Leo 2A6s even more so. Modernizing T72s would have been way too expensive and senseless in comparison. But its good thing these beasts were kept in store, T72 is without a doubt beauty if you can say that about a tank and definitely one of the most iconic tanks ever, especially without all the most modern upgrades.
@Jim Smithers Ye exactly....its just that some have said Finland should have kept T-72s in store even just for infrantry support but we have some 100 BMP2s and 100 CV90s for that purpose
@Jim Smithers ye it just comes to question of maintaining them and the cost of that. There is no sense to keep old tanks in storage if in case of war they are not ready for service/dont have spare parts for repairs
Wow now I just realized that the tank crew carried their tents, stoves, water, equipment on their tanks! So basically they were independent from supply train, carrying all they need for weeks with them, if doesn't need to reload extra ammo
Refueling would be nice, though ;-) But yes, the crew carries their personal equipment in the tank. Fuel & ammo & more food every now and then would be nice of course.
Same here. These and T-80's are for sale from $50,000 possibly not working to $300,000 refurbished. Sorry but no live rounds sold with them, and barrel filled kn with concrete. Looked last year to see how mucH are. Be fun .
Politics and good deals. When the older western tanks needed replacing the trade situation with Soviet Union was economically favorable, and the Soviet equipment could be negotiated for a good price. Soviet stuff was also easily available. The vehicles did need quite a bit of modifications and upgrades to western standards, but they were still a good deal.
@@reneegiese6315 Iraqi T-72s were export variants with no composite, no stabiliser, no electronic traverse and no targeting system; Russia always kept the more advanced ones for themselves and sold discount versions to other nations

I think we should have saved and preserved those T-72s, given the situation in Ukraine. I served in Parolannummi panzer grenadier/ armor infantry regirement in 1996.
Well the thing is they should have been kept maintained and up to date for 20 years in order for them to have been any use in Ukraine (let alone for Finnish Defence Forces). And ofc back then in early 2000s it was impossible to see that far into the future + the costs of maintaining and updating these tanks even if they had been just in reserve/storage would have been way too costly

Unfortunately especially in the Finnish environment of dense forests, ambushing tanks with modern shoulder-fired anti-tank missiles is a child's play. Love the design of the T72👌
Beauties. Properly crewed and utilized t-72s are no joke. Anything less than main battle tanks are going to have a bad day.
Anything, if crewed and utilized properly will mean business.

Yep a really streamlined efficient design. T-55 and T-62 were good for their time too. T-64 might as well have been a spaceship haha

Why did Finland buy so much Soviet equipment? Curious because it was bought during the Cold War

My thought: because NATO is far away, and the HUGE neighbor next door had cheaper ones.
Bilateral trade is one of the reasons..
