  • This video is part 1 of series on Open RAN. Traditionally the RAN has been a single product consisting of Base Band Unit (BBU) and Radio Unit (RU) in a single box connected to Antenna using wave guide cable (RF Cab;e). During late 3G deployment , Radio Unit was taken out and placed near to Antenna to avoid cable loss. The implementation was proprietary implemented by OEMs. Later OEMs introduced virtualised BBU function deployed on any COTS server but it was still proprietary implementation. Then Came the concept of Open RAN wherein RU was implemented on GPP COTS Server and Interface between BBU and RU became Open Interface.
    In this video images used are from NI, 3g4G, and parrallel Wieless web sites.

    Thank you for your this session. I have some query. what all are the functionality of STU and RRU. Its only for radio frequency or some other fucntionalies? Thanks in advance.

      In split 7.2 architecture, RRU also handles lower part of physical layer

    Firstly thank you for this amazing introduction to the ecosystem , my question will be about proprietary software on BBU side , for example I have A vendor bbu hardware and its proprietary software how they let other rru vendor to use open interface with their own hardware and software ? I mean how we equalize with proprietary software on bbu side and open interface between bbu-rru.

      That is CPRI. Generally venders have proprietary CPRI implementation. Ask your OEM for eCPRI support.

      I don't think so. As TSP, if you buy RU DU and CU from different OEMs, you may need one SI , for integration of three.

    Really good. In vRAN BBU hardware/software install at physical Site or deploy on cloud.

    • @5Gand6G
      @5Gand6G  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Generally on physical site. In CRAN , it is deployed on cloud centrally .

    really helpful and clear lesson thank you sir
    one question
    if we have a LTE network which is used as WISP (no calls only data network) for providing internet only we still need BBU ? can't we use an XGPON ONT instead ?
    sorry for a question like that but I'm still so new to this industry

    • @5Gand6G
      @5Gand6G  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You need a unit to handle LTE radio protocol between UE and eNB. BBU does that.

    Thank you for the clear overview on the different types of RAN. Apart from flexibility, does the implementation of OpenRAN offer other advantages in terms of performance? I assume that using COTS hardware has an impact on the costs: is it possible to quantify (in average) which would be the difference in price of a ORAN installation vs a traditional RAN?
    Thank you

      More than price factor is the flexibility operator will get to buy equipment from multiple venders. It allows innovation in various no network element. They can deploy on third party cloud or combination of telco cloud and third party cloud. We are going to see huge eco system around Open RAN in coming years

    By Proprietary interface in vRAN do you mean CPRI?
    If not, then is CPRI also a part of Open RAN?

    • @5Gand6G
      @5Gand6G  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It is proprietary implementation of CPRI by OEMs. ORAN allience has created OFH open front haul interface for interoperability.
