- There are giant venomous centipedes in Miami... and I'm going to track one down. I'm joined by my friend Emilio Pazmino for a journey of epic proportions into the tropical hammocks on the coast of Miami, and there are some insane biological discoveries to be had!

For those who read the description- we've updated the channel! I'm working on adding more features to videos to better expand our conversations about the secrets we find in the natural world! Introducing the Creature Tier System! There are four rankings:
1. Staple - These are the lowest tier creatures. They are the most common species in a given habitat, and while they're not boring, they're really only exciting when you're exploring a new habitat and you haven't seen them before. Not something to write home about.
2. Neat - These are a step up from Staple. They don't make your entire day, but they are worth taking a closer look at when found. Definitely can be exciting to have a productive day finding many Neat species.
3. Wild - These are exciting to find. Whether they have interesting defensive features that offer a nice challenge in the field, are particularly cool looking, or maybe a little bit rare, Wild species aren't necessarily the MOST memorable of encounters, but they definitely make your day when you see them. An adventure featuring many Wild species will truly be memorable.
4. Gem - These are special. Usually involving extremely interesting biology and significant rarity, Gem species are animals that you really do not see every day. These species can make your whole adventure, and will be very memorable.

Are there any…toxic…caterpillars nearby where you live? There are fuzzy caterpillars that people I’ve seen who are fine free handling centipedes and scorpions who won’t even try to touch. I’ve been so curious about them. They seem so innocent that I don’t think I would have hesitated to pick them up.

I get these in my garden in rural Andalusia. I've been bitten twice by ones that got into the house. The pain was unbelievably bad. It felt like I had trapped my finger in a car door, then set fire to it and tried to put the flames out with a hammer. At one point I remember thinking, "I'm going to lose this finger!"

We had centipedes in Spain, only upto about 5 inches but they're the only animal that made me literally run when I saw one. Something about them is both fascinating and terrifying.
Centipedes completely scare the crap out of me. Fortunately, I don't think there are any where I live. Seeing you handling him like that brought chills to my skin! Great video as always!
That tiny gecko looks like the common house geckos here in Thailand. They'll be hanging out near the lights everywhere, every night. Perfect free pest control!

What a cool centipede! I live in Alberta, Canada, and I watch your channel all the time. Today I was doing some spring cleaning at my house and I lifted some debris in the yard to toss it out, and underneath there was one of the largest centipedes I have seen in this area, not huge or anything, but maybe 3 inches long, bright orange. Not sure what sort of centipede he was, but he sure looked cool, and was in a definite hurry to run away and find new cover. Thanks for another great video as always!
Betcha it was an eastern red centipede (Scolopocryptops sp.)! Love those lil guys, they’re pretty much the only ones I find at home in North Carolina too
have you done any videos in the las vegas area? im moving there and am really nervous about the things that live there. apparently giant desert centipede, brown recluse, and bark scorpion.
I haven’t yet, but I want to make it out west later this year! So many cool things out there I want to get to see!
Not trying to scare you but, rattlers too, especially the Mojave Green rattlesnake. I understand that extreme southern Nevada is also blessed with Western Diamondback rattlers.

This just triggered a memory for me. When I was in preschool back when i lived in Georgia, we were on the playground and one of my classmates had a centipede crawl on his face. I'm not sure if he was bitten, but I remember an ambulance was called.

That's the most chill centipede I've ever seen, though they scare me usually. It's just exploring and investigating the strange object that's picked them up. Really cute I must say. Still not as adorable as the millipede you found later! Very colorful feller.
Florida has a ton of invasive species unfortunately. I'd love to say I'm amazed by those geckos, but invasives are so off-putting to me. Really cute as a pet or in its native habitat I'm sure, especially seeing it basically hugging your thumbs.

Yeah I have a mixed relationship with invasives. On the one hand, they do damage the environment, but as a wildlife nerd I can’t lie it’s so cool to see them in person. We caught Madagascar day geckos in the keys, saw invasive widows and mantises, it’s breathtaking really

Yeah, this southern weather shows you why we like lounging so much. We ain't lazy. It's just so hot and humid it is difficult to do much some days. And some of us are pretty lazy too 😂.
My NOPE list: Mambas, Taipans, Brown Snakes, King Cobras, Saw Scaled Vipers, Russell's Vipers, Sydney Funnel Webs, Brazilian Wandering Spiders... and ALL Giant Centipedes.
Good job getting back on the horse, I can imagine it wasn't easy taking a stab at free handling these creepy nightmares again. Obviously centipedes aren't as medically significant as the other creatures I mentioned, but nothing freaks me out more.
Honestly until I get a LOT more experience, mambas and basically any large elapids are on my nope list. I just don't know how to read them yet, and they're so much more venomous than any of the vipers we have in North America. I can handle the spiders and centipedes, and even those saw scaled and Russell's vipers I would feel decently confident with a good snake hook (wouldn't go hands-on but would use the hook to like keep them in frame if I were filming), but large elapids scare me to my core
So cool to see Miami in a natural way. I've only seen the flashy side on reruns of Miami Vice or MTV's Spring Break destinations!

Yup I definitely wasn’t there for that kinda party 😂 figured I’d throw some of the lizards we saw in the video, cause people have been asking but as you know I’m a big data guy and TH-cam doesn’t seem to like my reptile videos most of the time. Maybe keeping them as inclusions will help!

The one thing I am VERY grateful for, is that as big as these insects and reptiles are, they're not the crazy sizes of what was in the Era of Giants - Dinosaurs, Titanboas, Spiders and gnarly scorpions larger than a dog! ^^ Thanks for these videos, their fun and educational!
And you didn't get bitten! Good stuff. What did you end up doing with the gecko? If they're invasive, you don't release them, right? I'd love to see a gecko in the wild. I've seen a small, striped millipede here in Delaware before, but nothing like what you had. Awesome video!

That’s awesome! I don’t tend to find many centipedes locally - would probably have to drive at least an hour before I’d stand a reasonable chance of seeing a big one. But I did find a young giant centipede at work the other day. First time seeing one in a suburb.

These are native! Hard to come by and only in a select few locations, but they’re native. Such amazing centipedes. And yes! Emilio will be making a few more appearances, as well as Mikie from the past couple videos!

Another idea if you ever have time that's not just spider based is filming a dinoponera they look really cool and are some of the biggest ants alive today
Never knew that centipedes are so venomous and painful.
Watched a video from Brave Wilderness, where he intentionally gets bitten by a centipede and it seemed *extremly painful*.
I really never put a second thought to the dangers of these creatures and their venoms.
A lot of different creatures will surprise you! There’s a frog from Brazil with venomous spines that have a toxin more potent than most other animals in the world, and a caterpillar with human deaths to its name! Venom is a very useful defense that many different creatures independently evolved, because it’s so effective against prey and predators alike. Fortunately, most venomous animals are not very inclined to use it unless they’re really threatened. Centipedes will stay mostly out of your way, and as scary as they are they’re more afraid of you than you are of them. If it makes you feel better, while rumors exist, no centipede is confirmed to be lethal to humans either
I can't imagine living with these things around cities. House centipedes get into my basement all the time and they creep me out enough. If I had these things around I would move!
You need geckos or king snakes to keep them in check!😅
I stored some Wicker chairs under my friends house for a few months here in Hawaii...When I got them back, I used a garden hose with a pointy spray nozzle to rinse all the dirt & bugs off them. After my chairs had been in the house a couple weeks, I got a shocking surprise! As I walked down my hallway one night, I looked down to see the most ENORMOUS CENTIPEDE i have ever seen! It was red with yellow legs & weighed at least 10 pounds!....well, maybe not THAT much!😉

They’re awesome. I think I found em by accident browsing BugGuide a couple years back, and then my buddy Jack from Jack’s World of Wildlife let me in on a spot he knew about. If you make it to south Florida, I recommend looking for hotspots on iNaturalist and cross referencing with tropical hammock habitats 😉
I had a translucent gecko climb out of my shower drain in Tampa, and up the side of the shower wall. I have never seen such a creature. Before I could catch him, he crawled back down into the drain and was gone. He was really big for a Gecko.

I am from Texas, lived in Central Florida-Lake County for a decade now in Wayne County NC. Being a photographer what you do is of particular interest to me and I vhave photoed several of the unique ones you have found. There is a species of Rhinocerous Beetle in Central Florida-I've seen two in those ten years. Large, bout the size of a PingPong Ball with berautiful Jade green coloration and some black edges. Might be something you'd want to look for. Your Orb Weaver? Photoed and kept till she laid her egg sac and she was about the size ofyour hand in leg span. Few other things but I missremember.
I have yet to see most of those really cool rhinoceros beetles in the wild! Definitely something I would go after at some point. I dabble in macro photography but I am so bad at managing my instagram 😂 maybe I’ll get back into it and we could go photograph some bugs sometime!
@@MyWildBackyard I would love that. We are fairly close by my estimation. However, I no longer drive due to vision issues-it is what got me into photography. :)
Man... centipedes are just next level nightmare fuel. The way they can move so fast and flip around like crazy, and super venomous. Yikes.
I remember finding a large millipede in Tennessee and a little one in Florida. Wanted to pick him up but couldn't. There are certain bugs that I like to handle like mantises or stag beetles, but I'm absolutely terrified of spiders, centipedes, and scorpions. So I appreciate learning about these animals despite wanting to keep my distance, lol.

Yeah it’s why I carry my tripod with me with my camera already rolling in situations like this- gotta be able to frame a shot quick in case I see something! Emilio came in super clutch, I don’t know if we would’ve gotten that centipede without him. And yes, he can catch anything. The stuff I’ve seen him grab with his bare hands shouldn’t be possible

I live in NC also. Peidmont area .In the last couple years I've started seeing bright green Gecko's sunning around my porch and on the fence. Used to be only the dark black purplish lizards all over the place. But def been seeing the Geckos popping up. Green on the cement porch and brown when they are on my fence. Me and the wife actually saw one today i pointed out.
I've heard Vietnam vets say that the 10-inch centipedes were more frightening than any snake or spider...

That was💪awesome Spencer. Good work 👏 those creatures are scary they are one I'm terrified of for obvious reasons. You know which creature I found and have now made a home for it...I have been dying for one of my own, not this species but it was still amazing to find one in my own house. A Zebra Jumping spider! I couldn't believe it I was looking online, then opened my shower curtain and slowly falling down on web it was a jumper. I think it's female but not 100% doing some more reading and research, also I'm trying to feed it, I found a few little ants I threw in a small pill bud which I don't know if will eat one until I can get my hands on some fruit flies or something...any ideas I took a quick look around outside in my backyard under rocks and wood but not a lot of insects out just yet....usually in nice weather there's a lot. Any ideas 🤔 Spencer? ❤
Honestly put out some fruit in the sun and you will get fruit flies. There are likely dormant eggs waiting for the right stimulus to hatch hiding around somewhere and you’ll find em. Congrats on your jumping spider!

I've seen them many times while herping under boards, in rotting logs and other debris.
Love the vids alot please do Brazilian wandering vs brown recluse spot the difference maybe a Brazilian wandering vs brown recluse vs wolf spider they are all known to be deadly and have alot of looks in common ik they are easy to spot the difference but it would be cool
I want to film a Brazilian wandering spider sooooo bad. They’re such awesome creatures. That’s a really good idea though- showcase a few different spiders to show the differences!

Be careful! Gators are no joke, and if they don’t scare you, FWC should. They catch ya with a gator you could be in serious legal trouble, it’s one of the reasons you don’t see gators on the channel yet! I need to get permits lined up. Unfortunately they don’t distinguish between people who are educating the public about these amazing animals and those who are out to do harm, and they won’t take explanations. Be very careful!
I live in Baja, Mexico on the Sea of Cortez a few hours south of the border. I find large centipedes in my home from time to time. What type would we have down here? We also have sun scorpions and light colored scorpions that look like Arizona Bark Scorpions.
I was staying with a friend that lives on the island of Grenada. While I was. There she got stung by one of these. She was sick from it for the better part of a day. No fun. Made me sleep a bit less easy.

I am from where centipedes are very small. But I found some very small millipedes and put them in a container, they released cyanide and ended up killing themselves. I felt sorry for them. 🥺
Ugh florida has a lot of crazy critters. Thank you Hurricane Andrew which really turned the state into the eco disaster it is today.
Lived in Orlando for 13 months in 2000-2001, we had some gecko’s and chameleons in the apartment and house I lived in. It was nice not to have flys and mosquitoes all over the place like in Ohio!

As the anole runs down the tree in the gecko segment. Lol. South Florida has become a North American safari. Lol. Surprised you guys didn’t see any blind snakes. They seam to be under everything in the Miami area.
Funny enough only saw one blind snake! At a different location, we flipped it under a brick
i've seen geckos in Colorado
One other thing that makes the critters of Miami unique is the fact that most of them are coke addicts. This makes them highly unpredictable.
