So many great songs - but director refused to release the soundtrack! - 80s Song of The Day.
Life moves pretty fast… If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.
This week it's the ultimate boy’s own adventure. With a wildly eclectic soundtrack. Indeed I had a hard time picking just one song from this film.
Of course I am talking about Ferris Beuller’s Day Off. My personal favourite John Hughes film. Deeply loved by its fans - we will take a look at the many musical moments that make this one of the best soundtracks ever.
So get ready to barf up a lung and eat some pancreas as we look at another 80s Song Of The Day.
If we were leave out the obviously non-eighties songs like Danke Shoen by Wayne Newton an excerpt from the Star Wars Theme and the Beatles singing Twist and Shout. The rest is of it includes Sigue Sigue Sputnik’s Love Missile F1-11. Beat City" by The Flowerpot Men, two tracks by the Dream Academy, namely The Edge Of Forever and an instrumental cover of The Smiths song, Please, please please let me get what I want. Oh yeah by Swiss Duo Yello, BAD by Big Audio Dynamite and "March of the Swivelheads" by the Beat.
The genres cover post punk/new wave, Electronica, Ska, Pop and more. John Hughes actually refused to release a soundtrack album which made Label A&M furious. The begged him to put one out but Hughes felt the collection would not work well together as a continuous album. Saying “"who'd want all of these songs? I mean, would kids want "Danke Schoen" and "Oh Yeah" on the same record?"
But what to choose as the song of the day? "Please please please…" comes at a really pivotal moment in the film, but it’s too soon to be dipping back into the Smiths catalogue just yet. "Oh yeah" is a classic but I feel is already very well known to most people. You can’t even look at a red Ferrari without hearing “Oh Yeah” by Yello inside your head.
Instead I’m going recommend BAD by Big Audio Dynamite. Fusing Rock Funk Reggae and Hip Hop. Big Audio Dynamite was formed in London by Mick Jones former guitarist and co-vocalist with the Clash. They had a UK, US, Australia and New Zealand Number 1 with the song Rush in 1991.
Bad was the B-Side to their Single “The Bottom Line” which did moderately well in Australasia especially in the club scene but thanks to it’s inclusion in Ferris Beuller’s Day Off it is probably as well known now as any of their other singles from the 80s.

Band Had To Be Convinced To Record This Song. It Became Their Biggest Hit! - 80s Song of The Day

As we continue looking at the films of legendary 80s Screenwriter Director and producer John Hughes and the songs and soundtracks that helped cement them into eighties history, this week we are looking at 1985’s the Breakfast Club. Unlike many of his other films, The Breakfast Club did have an original score in a sense. An album of songs was commissioned - with the tracks primarily written and ...

There are 3 words that always get used together when talking about the music business. It’s that unholy trinity of Sex and Drugs and Rock ’n Roll. Well today’s song is probably considered more like pop but it certainly ticks the other 2 boxes. It’s an 80s classic by a band that was better know for being punk rockers. Despite zero confidence or support from their label this hit defied all expect...
Success caught them unprepared! They had a surprise mega-hit but didn't even have a music video!!

Take a look with me at a million selling hit that no one was prepared for! How the producers of this record shelved it because they didn't realise what a successful song they had. They were so unprepared for its success they didn't even have a music video for it. And we look at the origin of the internet’s biggest, most enduring meme.
This duo's producer kept spending $$$ and blew the budget while they had no idea what was happening!

As I do research for these videos I discover things I never knew including new music that despite being decades old is brand new to me. So following on from last week’s episode on German Synth-Pop group Propaganda I’m taking a look at Claudia Brücken next recording project and my new favourite obsession… and the financial challenges in bring it to the world. Stay tuned for Lifestyles of the Ric...

This week we’re taking a look at a classic hit... “I can’t go for that. (No can do)” from Hall and Oates. Despite forming a good friendship and even sharing a couple of apartments together Darryl Hall and John Oates never actually formed a group together until years later and eventually released their first album on Atlantic Records in 1972. They had incredible output, releasing an album a year...
This Band Could Have Ruled the Eighties Music Scene But ONE SUPERSTAR GROUP Stood in their Way.

It's 1985 and bands like Duran Duran, A-Ha, Tears for Fears and many others were cementing their status as giants of Eighties pop. And launching their first album around this time were a band, described by one reviewer as “ABBA in Hell”. They were ready for international stardom but One Group prevented their success and spelled the end for their career.

What do you get when you combine a model, a Soap Opera actress, TV presenter, some lesser known relatives of more famous musicians and a member of European royalty? Sounds like a season of “I’m a celebrity - get me out of here” but in the 80s you got the Chantoozies.

No, that isn't why it didn't get to No.1 in the UK. It was beaten to No.1 by The Jam's "Town Called Malice", because The Jam had released 2 different 7"s of Town Called Malice: one with a studio version and one with a live version and that sales for both 7"s of their single were counted together, much to the annoyance of the Stranglers' label EMI, who knew that fans of the Jam were buying both 7"s of Town Called Malice and felt that that was the reason why Golden Brown missed the top spot.
