  • Jonathan Ferguson, a weapons expert and Keeper of Firearms & Artillery at the Royal Armouries, breaks down the iconic weaponry of Call of Duty: WW2, including the M1 Garand - complete with its iconic ‘ping’ sound, the Russian PPSh-41 submachine gun, and the German STG44 Assault Rifle.
Call of Duty: WW2 saw the COD franchise return to the Second World War with a ‘boots on the ground’ shooter experience, which was full to the brim with period WW2 guns like the American Thompson M1A1, the German MP40, and the Mauser C96 semi-automatic pistol.
In the above video, Jonathan Ferguson, a weapons expert and Keeper of Firearms & Artillery at the Royal Armouries, breaks down the weapons of Call of Duty: WW2, and compares their in-game depictions against their real-world counterparts.

@@afallenhuman True but it's sad when both realism and gameplay would have made something fun and interesting, but it went cartoony due to lack of effort. Good example being when a terrifying gun like an MG42 Machine gun feels more like a sub-machine gun for long range instead of a fully automatic bolt action rifle. Or when in a multiplayer game the 'character' behind each nation is stripped apart by the ability for loadouts to equip any gun despite nation.

So, when I first played the game, I found it odd that the ppsh was in Normandy, but I did some research and found that when a bunch of eastern front units were transferred too the western front in 1943(i think), they took the ppsh they had captured and rechambered them to 9mm parabellum( used in luger, p38s mp 40s and is one of the most common pistol calibers today) and toom them with them to France

    • @comeatmebro3229
      @comeatmebro3229 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

yes and no, some PPSh were rechambered for 9mm (MP 41(r)) but most of them were not (MP 717(r)) , the Germans captured so many PPSH throughout the war that they were widely distributed and even units who did not serve on the eastern front were issued them. these unaltered versions of the gun were issued with 7.63×25mm Mauser ammunition instead of the soviet Soviet 7.62x25mm.
So yes contrary to popular belief the PPSH was actually reletively common on the western front so the game in this isntance is accurate (they also didn't use the drum mag on the western front due the the ammo they needed to use)

The actual charging handle is the tab extended to the left side of the weapon (which would pull back the entire barrel shroud when pulled), depicted as a sling mount in-game.

This is an issue that pretty much every game faces, and it seems that he's aware of stylistic and functional decisions being made in the design of an FPS. So.

With regards to the PPsh-41, I have heard an interesting account of some Allied troops encountering this weapon in the possession of German troops in Normandy, likely captured on the Eastern front. An American paratrooper by the name of Richard Ladd (502nd PIR, 101st Airborne) managed to recover a PPsh-41 from a German supply wagon (having lost his own weapon previously) in the early hours of June 6th, and shortly after used it to kill three German soldiers in a brief firefight. Obviously such a weapon would not have been used very commonly (at least not as depicted in COD: WW2), but I guess there is a *slight* historical basis for such a thing.
Just an interesting tidbit I thought I would share.

The German division at Omaha beach had been brought to Normandy from the eastern so seeing Russian weapons in France at that time was possible.

I love how Jonathan focuses strictly on the weapons as opposed to ripping on the game or the developers - he isn't a developer or a game tester, he's a firearms expert and that's what he focuses on. Games are for entertainment and nothing more, and he recognizes that instead of just going "durhr this is so unrealistic, this game is totally unplayable durhr".

Despite being open-bolt, the Thompson actually locks open when empty. So a reload would indeed consist of just a magazine change, since the bolt is already back.
The Thompson is pretty much the only open-bolt subgun this applies to, so I don't blame him on that one.

When I was stationed at Ft Sill we had some important people visit and the museum brought out some of their guns
I fired the M1 Garand. It's was such a great experience. Even got a picture of the shell ejecting and it looks blurred. The M1 had been my favorite WW2 gun since play MOH rising sun on ps2

Something I noticed is the m1 reload mechanic, the animation has the character push the bolt forward rather than the bold being released once the pressure is released from the top round

The reflex sights were what turned me away from the recent WW1 and WW2 games. It was basically Modern Warfare with a WW1 or WW2 skin on top of it. What is even the point of doing either WW if you are just going to throw the era out of the window.

And it's always good to watch Jonathan go through them (literally and metaphorically😉). Well done!
