I prefer full strength for adhering base or skim coats to painted stucco surfaces.
Full-strength Weld-Crete over a painted stucco surface is a different story.

I do this stuff for a living. Anyone else, do as the cans or bottles tell you as I explain what I have done for over thirty years with my intricate material knowledge.
All should realize, that Weld-Crete is made for concrete over concrete but can also be used for thin layers of stucco finish coats over painted surfaces. Because it is so strong, I often am forced to dilute it. But don't you guys do this, as there are complicated reasons we applicators sometimes do this.
Quikrete bonding agent is sold at HD and Lowe's big chain hardware stores. Do not add water to it.
Larson’s “Weld-Crete is sold at plastering yards. Thus Google, “Plastering yards near me,”
if you are interested in using Weld-Crete as your bonding agent.
I added Sika’s bonding agent to prove a point I didn’t explain in this video.
Sika additive is usually for grout, as in tile adhesives.
Instead of mixing the grout with water, you would combine the grout with the sika bonding agent.
This gives the tile grout more strength to adhere to many substrates.

As much as you mention Weld Crete they should be paying you for your advertising. I am not kidding. I don't think I have seen one of your videos where you don't mention it. I find it's rare to get paid for anything unless you're under contract, similarly to the idea that libraries aren't used more often as they are free and the things we get for free are always taken for granted, which are important.
The things we pay for are what the average person treasures, which is a waste of the mind.

Awesome videos Kirk, love watching them! I have an adobe house with cementitious stucco. Parapet walls and wet climate have caused it to crack like an egg in areas. I would like to add a waterproofing membrane like an acrylic paint and then add a cementitious skim coat over top to get the look I have right now. ( I don’t like the painted lustre look) . I’m thinking either coat wall with Durarock prep D with fibreglass mesh sheets and then use a bonding agent, and then put a Lahabra cementitious colour coat on top. What would be a better waterproofer, the prep d or the acrylic paint? How’s my thinking here? Would this work? Cheers man!

Question: Can I use quikrete bonding agent on unpainted regular sheetrock/drywall before structolite? I'm working on a 150 year old house overlooking the mighty mississippi in the backwoods of Iowa and the local Lowe's doesn't sell plasterweld or anything appropriate and was hoping to use the Quikrete stuff to get by in a pinch. Bad idea???

Hey Kirk great information, love your videos have helped a lot! Have a ? Can faux river Rock be applied right over a scratch coat or should a brown coat also need to be applied?
Howdy Randy, yes, in fact, just a scratch coat with deep scratch marks is necessary to hold the mortar you intend to use as your grout.
If a brown coat was applied you would have troble adhering any stones, so don't do that.

hello I am having an issue with my stucko falling off of my house, the concrete behind the stucko is like real sandy and dusty. I am curious if I can add the bonding agent over the current stucko to help stick it back to the wall and patch only the spots that are falling off the house?????
Howdy Carol, no, sorry, once a stucco base or top coat loses it bond the only alternative is to remove it and start over.
As a rule if applied properly it adheres forever.

Good evening Forlinilv, sorry brother I have no experience with this product. As a finish coat, I will say Stuco-flex or Dry-vit would seal it when applied properly.

Hi Kirk, the foundation of my house has an adhesive that was used to attach dimple board. The dimple board has been removed, but the adhesive cannot be (though it's loose in places where concrete has fallen away underneath). I'm wondering if its possible to put stucco mesh overtop the adhesive and parging concrete on the mesh? How would I use a bonding agent in this scenario? Both on the adhesive and mesh?

As materials are only as good as what they are placed over.
Id recommends pressure washing then scraping any loose stuff off, afterward apply a bonding agent, then plastering.

Thanks, that's what I was thinking, just wanted to double check with the professional. What I'm going to do it's scrap of any loose stucco and paint and then wash the walls clean. Apply a bonding agent and then shoot the stucco with a texture gun and finally paint it since I'm not going to use a color coat stucco to stay within my budget.

Good evening, Max, a wall does not need to breathe. That's a myth.😉 Unless you have a maintenance-free cementitious color finish, this finish is like a brick, it darkens when wet then when dryer conditions return it lightens when the water evaporates.

Kirk, great videos, learn a lot from you. Have you ever had to work on a masonry wall where there is water seepage coming through the wall and how did you handle that?
Good evening, Charles. No one can handle that.
That means one can't spread any to the waterproof stucco acrylic finishes, paints, or cementitious product to dam the water behind a retaining wall.
The best you can do is drill holes about an inch to two inches thick at the bottoms of the retaining wall every foot or two.
The other option is to remove all the dirt from the rear, inside and place french drains back there and or rubber membranes to stop the rainwater from penetrating the porous cement wall. Good luck.
I have yet met a person who was willing to invest that kind of time and money into fixing a leaking retaining wall. Now no doubt if that rainwater was entering someone's living area, they would have no choice but to hire a crew with tractors to do just this, most folks just shake their heads and think, shit happens.😉
Hello Kirk, I would like to apply a mottled-color, steel trowel smooth, veneer plaster over my interior walls. They currently have decades of structurally sound paint on them. Would a bonding agent suffice to allow the plaster to stick? Or should I go with some form of mesh.

Great information Kirk, I am going over some 100 year old basement walls in Philadelphia after scraping and wire brushing with stucco mortar mix from home depot.With the Silka can you brush it on straight right out of the bottle? Or mix a slurry with it and and apply before the mix. I am wetting down the wall before.Thanks again,Dave
Hi David Termini, I would apply it full strength, the only bonding agent I dilute is Weld Create when I'm apply a color coat, which is an eighth of an inch think, if I'm going to apply a skim coat of plaster, I apply full strength.

Evening Mike, I've never used an mix before and I'm sorry I included Sika's acrylic add mix it in this video about bonding agents, but yes you can, but I feel it's not really necessary.

Now, I DO love these videos, very very much, do don't get me wrong here. I never leave comments, because there is nothing to comment about unless I want to say "bravo!" But I must say, I have looked on the labels of the two products that are in the 1 gallon jugs, and they say very clearly, to NOT apply that stuff to several types of surfaces, and one of them listed is "paint." So my thought is they prefer that the agent is applied to concrete/stucco without paint on it, but if there is paint, that is not generally a problem, as we are told here in this video. So I will use the stuff, and expect that it is better to use it than not use it.

Keep in mind If I manufactured and of these bonding agents I'd have many more "don't's" on the can as there will always be half of the buyers who will apply it improperly and wish to take a company to court for their misuse, welcome to the real worldof being frustrated and wishesing to blame others, been there myself a time or two also.

can I use weld crete on a concrete wall that I'm having trouble get cultured stone to stick? I believe form oil was used when it was poured and i had some stone fall off. I believe this will work
Hello Genelle, yes some folks use oil to saturate the boards so the concrete won't stick. That is difficult to remove. Very difficult. You would need about 3,500 pounds of water pressure which only comes from a gas-powered pressure washer.
Or if it's a small area, a wire brush and lots of elbow grease some grease-cutting soap would also help. 🥂
hi, i have a question for you. i bought a ferrocement boat hull and the boat was sitting in the drydock for 10 years.. i check the hull and there no crack, but theres some small blisters.. my question is.. do you have any advice on what product to use to add another layer of "something" to make it stronger, watersealed, and paint? just incase. thanks

Can I use this stuff on interior plastered walls to adhere ledger tile? I have a brick fireplace that had been floated with plaster/thinset. I know the ledger tile needs mortar but really don't want to use lath or cement boards due to brick underneath.
Good afternoon J Dude, if it was me I'd use the thin set if you wanted a greater bond you can mix the powered thin set that is sold in bags at Home Depot with the Sika bonding agent instead of water in the video.
Another option is Polybond by La Habra sold by all the professinal plastering yards.

Kirk, love the videos. I need to repair some concrete balusters and some concrete corners that the balusters come up against. Will definitely be using a bonding agent thanks to your videos. This repair is in northern NJ, cold, hot, direct sun etc. alot of extremes. Anyway, should I use regular scratch coat stucco, mortar mix or thinset? What are the differences in each?

Hi Kirk - love your videos. I recently learned the hard way that bonding agents don't help plaster bond to wood. How would I plaster over the wood framing around my windows inside my house? I like the look more than putting the trim back up.
Howdy Adrian, the plaster won't adhere to the wood at all, as in the het the wood will expand; thus, the plaster or stucco will pop off. You need to sheetrock over the wood first if it's inside. 😉
Hello Kirk. Love your videos, they’ve helped me a lot since I live in Japan and can’t always get the answers I need.
A while back I renovated an old apartment - took of the plasterboard ceilings and exposed the concrete ceiling which gave me an extra 5-feet of ceiling height. The concrete was covered with dense blue styrofoam, which I was able to render using some plastic type of render a local builder sourced out for me - it was a two part product that we mixed together and applied pretty quickly - much harder to apply than plaster and I didn’t do such a good job.
I am renovating my home now and once again have exposed the ceiling, and once again the dense blue styrofoam covering the concrete. Question: can I plaster over this foam and what should I add to the plaster to give it extra stickiness?

Here in the u.s. we have to apply a wire mesh over styrofoam befor stucco. "rules"
If this is not necessary in Japan, I would apply the cementitious bonding agent agent called Polybond about an 1/8 of an inch thick, this product is manufactured by La Habra and sticks to everything plus is really strong, if you can find it.
It's specifically engineered for attaching styrofoam to painted surfaces or brown coats.
If you cant find you can use a bonding agent , "weld-Crete" then a thin coat of portland cement plaster as you don't need to go thick as you have concrete plus foam so insulation values should not be a priority, I would focus more on not to much weight of cement plaster as too much can fail or fall off, stick to a quarter inch or less and use a full strength bonding agent.

Say Kirk, I'm heading to Westside to pick up some Weldcrete (got my window repair job papered and lathed, ready to go) I'll be using La Habra Exterior Color base 100 + color pack final finish BUT should I go with the La Habra scratch and brown fibered 47 or just use Sakrete Scratch/Brown? Can I use a Hand mixer with spiral whip or need a mortar mixer?
Howdy you can use either base coat. And sure you can use a drill with a paddle to mix your finish coat. Mixers are for big jobs.🕵🏼

question...when you apply this product, you leave the product to dry in the wall and after apply the new concrete or at the same time you apply it you add the new concrete?

Never add a bonding agent to the new stucco as this will render the bonding agent useless.
In this video there is also a gallon of SIKA, this is an acrylic additive mainly used for grout to achieve a stronger bond.
One pour into the bagged grout instead of water.

Howdy Dude, Good question, A bonding agent is necessary for new stucco or plaster to adhere to anything.. A primer is used before painting, primers have nothing to do with making certain stucco adheres to anything, in fact using a primer will stop stucco from adhering.🥳

sorry Kirk I'm still confused.. so the sikalatex product that you're showing to the left of weldCrete that is applied similarly, in that you just paint the sikalatex bonding agent on the surface and then stucco over top? thank you sir!
After searching high and low for everything about pool plaster I also saw info galore on wall plasters, fortifiers, and adhesives.
Some adhesives/fortifiers such as sika acryilc fortifier have instructions on them about mixing 2 parts sand, 1 part cement, then mixing the adhesive fortifier to a paint like consistency then brushing on the walls.
Many other vids, and google searches apply it directly then once tacky they apply the plaster etc.
Sika seems to be both fortifier and adhesive. I'm a little confused about what I should do.
Should I apply adhesive/fortifier to the wall and put the plaster on instantly or wait ?
Should I mix as the Sika instruction direct ? Those instructions seem strange to me at a glance.
So many different techniques I just want it to stick to the old concrete wall.

Howdy Steve, If it were me I would use either weld crete or quikrete bonding agent,
I don't use the sika product as it's a fortifier but I wanted to give an option as weld crete is not sold at many stores.

I’m putting Rapid Set Stucco Patch on my painted stucco wall to fill a hole. Can I use Lanco blue bonding agent instead of the Weld Crete. Will Lanco bonding agent work on painted surface like Weld Crete will?

I have not heard of "Lanco blue bonding agent," but no doubt if it says it bonds new stucco to painted surfaces, it does.
Keep in mind that Larson's has been for sale sinse1952 at all the plastering material yards and perhaps still sold at plastering yards.
Since it is a great product, many will copy the name and the color. This is the way our world works.
If it's good, why reinvent the wheel? Just copy it, Right?

Hi Kirk thank you for the video. I have stucco on a block foundation at a beach house. the stucco is grey color and we want to paint it white. The foundation needs to breath to let moisture out so I'm using an acrylic paint and not elastomeric. Question is would the bonding agent Weld Crete be a problem? Would it be a seal that would trap moisture from escaping? Thanks again
No, Weld-Creat is a bonding agent not a primer. On stucco breathing, it’s only important if you’re using a pure lime stucco. Good luck finding that here in the USA. Lime should be breathable, Portland can be painted for longevity.
Are these bonding agents optional as far as adding stucco (or a skim coat) to an existing concrete wall? Don't know if I need to apply this to that type of surface.

Good afternoon Jay Jay, I like to wait until it's dry to the touch, which under normal circumstances take about 5 to 30 minutes, weather plays a huge roll with this dry time.
Most bonding agents say you can leave on a maximum of ten days, then you must apply the stucco.
Read the product you're going to use as there are many different brands with different rules.
What's the best reason not to apply while the bonding agent is wet??????

Liability, there always half the folks who don't understand how to score or micro score and or pressure wash with enough force or even wire brush with soap and water painted surfaces.
They don't have the manpower to ague usually in court with the folks who have no clue as proper prep work, as this takes sometimes 15 years to learn.

Great video, but quick question; The walls I want to skim coat are painted with a satin finish. Can I use Sika Concrete Adhesive, before applying Quick Set Lite compound for skim coating?
Howdy Nico, I have used Sika as a fortifier, It's used to mix mud instead of water,
But I tend to use the products that are sold at Westside building materials such as Larson's for a bonding agent.

Can you use the Sikka or Quickrete agents for interior plastering like the Plasterweld? I have a wall and ceiling and I tore out and I need to replaster and they don't carry Plasterweld around here but HD carries the other two. Thanks!
Howdy gsdapollo, if you go to home depot, buy the Quikcrete, the Sika product will also work, but has several purposes such as a fortifier or mix adhesive.

I bought the quikrete bonding agent at Home Depot. I painted it on like paint. Should I have diluted it first?

Howdy dude, yes, bonding agents are necessary in order properly attach all new skim coats to existing painted walls.
Before you apply the bonding agent make certain the wall is very clean.

Hi Kirk, I have a question on using weldcrete. I have applied full strength weld crete to a painted concrete block wall. Larsens recommends applying the basecoat within 10 days of applying the weldcrete, however it will be around 2 weeks by the time I apply the basecoat. Also, in this period of time it has rained on the wall that I painted on the weldcrete. Do you have any recommendations?

Kirk, I am going to stucco a 40 year old brick chimney with a quickcrete type S mortar Stained brown to match my house. The chimney has recessed mortar joints, should I use a bonding agent? The Chimney is large, about 26ft tall and 6ft wide.
Howdy Robert, nothing adheres to a dusty or dirty surface, I suggest you pressure wash with at least 3,000 psi strength, if your comfortable licking this wall it's ready for stucco with no bonding agent, If your not that brave the wall should have larson's bonding agent applied also for peace of mind,
It cost 30 bucks for a gallon for this piece of mind,
I always include it myself.

This is the info I've been searching for. Just so I have it right, my house has an outside concrete foundation that was painted white and I want to get it back to an original unpainted concrete. I can clean it and then apply weld crete and then skim it with Portland cement? Have I got that right? Do I let the weld crete dry or apply the skim while it's still wet? Thanks for your great vids!
Howdy Violet, Weld Crete drys in about 20 minutes on a normal day, If it's tacky when I apply this works too.
Or you can allow drying for a few days too if necessary.

Hi Kirk, should I cut Quick Crete's bonding agent 50% with water like you do with Weld Crete? I can locally get only gallons only of Weld and just need a quart. I'm a little confused about the difference between skim, texture and color coats. I'm going to blend into painted old stucco done in 1956 and painted by using quick crete stucco patch 16/20 as I think that's what the old sand is. Later the house will get painted .I plan to float it out to show the aggregate and it'll be pretty thin. BTW this is to avoid checking which I wouldn't have thought without you.

Howdy, No, never dilute Quilkrete bonding agent. Weld Crete by Larson"s should not be diluted either except by the professionals. It's complicated.

Hello genis696, I believe you can use the exterior weld-crete for interior's as it's a stronger formula, but under no circumstances should the plaster weld be used for exteriors. Both of these bonding agent are manufactured by Larson's if you wish their professional advice.
Keep in mind, I'm simply a stucco dude not an engineer.

We have a chimney that has been painted before and the exterior of the brick is deteriorating and it is flaking off exposing the unpainted brick. Will stucco stick to this and stop the deterioration of my chimney? Our brick house in places is doing the same.

Something important to know about WeldCrete--- it's shelf stable for only a year UNOPENED. (The fine print.) The stuff is expensive. Something to think about if you're using only a little here and there, now and then. I bought it, but I've been reluctant to open it until I know I'm going to be doing a lot of work. I'll probably return it for now.
Consequently, I also bought the Quikrete concrete bonding adhesive. However, that product recommends it not be used over previously painted surfaces. I initially assumed they meant loose paint, but they state that the product works by creating a chemical bond between the old concrete or plaster and the new, which presumably doesn't occur if there's paint involved. So, like others, I'm wondering what to do where I have to do some stucco patching over old, painted stucco. Your thoughts would be appreciated.
Howdy Blank dude, all products get old, even explosives for wars, had to throw that gross truth in.
If you read most labels, such as weld crete, it's used most of the time correctly, but a company only needs possible 1% to misuse it and create expensive lawsuits that they either deal with or get sued for doing nothing.
I don't blame any of the bonding agents for suggesting like weld crete "if not satisfied, we'll return another can to you."
Nor do I blame Quikrete for their guarantee and exceptions either.
BTW, Quikrete has been in the cement business longer than old Kirk and is a quality company.
It's the people who force them to say what they do on cans as lawsuits can and will tie them up in courtrooms.
I would say the same thing.
I have used Quikrete before with excellent results.
What I sometimes do too is, wire brush a painted surface as this etches and create micro scratches which also helps with bonding espeshally if I'm not sure of the solidness of the painted surface as the stucco is only as good as to what' it's applied on.

I was wondering in regards to reattaching loose plaster and i do not want to just use washers to reattach it and have to try to cover the washers what kind of adhesive do you use if any. Howdy Steve, if a pice of stucco is loose I remove it, then I generally use a bonding agent then re-plaster, as a rule I don't reattach a piece of stucco or plaster that has failed.,

So what i am doing is getting rid of weaker material and then wetting lathe with a little water as i will be putting in fairly thick coats of durabond and i do not want the dry lathe to pull out moisture from my mix. I saw a video where there was a glue like material pumped into pre drilled holes in plaster and plugs were used till it cured then removed. There is no way i can do what you do. I have watched numerous videos and i am fine with accepting i cannot match your expertise. I live in toronto canada and do not know of any place that carries this adhesive just tubes of sealant to fasten wallboard. Thank you for replying i truly appreciate it.
Howdy Steve, well if you're going to use a sealant I would suggest sikaflex adhesive and sealant, apply to piece, tape on with vinyl tape wait 24 hours, it should hold forever if done properly.

Can this be used on plywood or mdf with veneer plaster applied on top? Full strength or diluted?
Good morning Wggee; unfortunately, tapping mud and all interior plaster should not be applied over wood, even if you apply a bonding agent? Why? Excellent question, by the way.
When hot or even warm, the wood can expand; thus, all plaster will pop off. You are better off going over sheetrock; this mud will adhere permanently. And yes, I have tried this twice many years back, only to have to scrape off the loose or peeling plaster, then attach the sheetrock and do it again. Cheers.
Hi Kirk. Have you ever used Weld Crete and then applied a fast setting cement on it? The Weld Crete instructions say to apply fast setting cement while the Weld Crete is still tacky.
Howdy Shamus, about a hundred times. Weld Crete has different purposes for concrete to concrete, always use full strength, and do what the can says.
To adhere a cementitious stucco color coat to a painted stucco finish, is quite different.

Hi Adrian Dona, if applied properly and color tints should be minimal, or so the average person can't tell the difference.
I have applied easily over a hundred color coats and every once in awhile the color can be off a shade or two. such is life as a stucco dude.

Thanks for posting these very helpful videos. I have a question. I'm going to do a small re-stucco a small outbuilding on my property. The existing stucco isn't painted and hasn't been treated with any waterproofing products. Since it's a small one-time job (about 500 square feet of surface) and I'm no pro, I'll be using pre-mixed stucco from a big box store. Anyway, do you recommend that I use a concrete bonding agent before applying the stucco or would wetting the surface down be enough?

Good question, I would pressure wash to remove any dirt if necessary, next I would hose down the existing porous stucco so that the new will adhere by suction, both coats have to cure together, like a marriage.

Do you have any experience using Rapid Set stucco over Weld Crete?
I want to apply a skim coat over painted stucco (around a poorly done window replacement) and Weld Crete instructions say, "EXCEPTION: FAST SET PATCHING CEMENTS AND GROUTS MUST BE APPLIED WHILE THE WELD-CRETE FILM IS STILL TACKY." Does this mean I need to brush on the Weld Crete, then apply the Rapid Set right away?
I’ve used at least 500 gallons of this bonding agent, I’ve never had a problem with it. Ever. Whether or not it’s been on for up to ten days or tacky. Keep in mind they have to have rules or folks will blame them for any and all of apprentice mistakes.

Doing interior cinder block wall below grade. Wall is dry, just need to nylon wire wheel it and clean (lots of YUNK on the wall) but dry. Question? Do you use bonding agent and wire lath? Can you? Should you? Prior to scratch/skim coat. This is just to make the wall uniform before putting up foam board insulation.

As a rule I don't attach stucco netting to bricks, cinder blocks on concrete walls as it's not necessary.

The wall has these patches of rubbery sealer on it and the only thing that works is a demo-tool scratching the stuff off. Tried scraper/trowel/wire brush/nylon wheel NOPE. Would love to power wash, but it's inside and can't handle the water flow. I will just keep at it Poco-ah-Poco. Saw your vid on various "lathe". Got a decent idea of what to do. Is 1/2" too thick you think?

Hey MIke, if whatever rubber is attached solid and it's also clean, you can go over it, but your new finish is only as good as the finish it's attached to.
Often I find jobs that no matter what I do some areas refuse to come off, thus we simply go over.
1/2 inch or thicker is fine,

Good morning Mastro, bonding agents are usually applied to painted surfaces and once a scratch coat is applied, the next coat adheres by suction, thus no bonding agent is necessary.

Howdy kent, FYI, plaster weld and weld crete both manufactured by larsons are sold only at professional plastering yards at this time,
They do however sell the quikrete at Home depots, which I feel is just as good, also the sika product is primarily used as an additive when mixing stucco concrete for extra bonding instead of mixing with water.

I used the green label Rapid Set Concrete Mix 60 lbs bag & just add water to make stepping stones for my garden, when I unmold there are some small cracks and holes. If I add the bonding agent, will this prevent the cracks and holes? I want to make smooth stepping stones that are strong and was thinking of doing a 1:1 ratio of Portland cement and sand. Can you let me know if I need to add a bonding agent, if so, which brand and no water should be added if I use a bonding agent?

A bonding agent in this mix won't do any good.
BTW, alway spray mist the molds with water before pouring in the cement plaster, why?
If dry, they will pit the stucco and not come off well either.

thanks for the informative videos. Helps me a lot in decision making. I have a house that had a rough stucco, color coat done in 1989. The house is a mid-century modern in a California desert city. I want to avoid grinding down the existing and save time by using a bonding coat. If I power wash (*per your comments below) then add the Weld Crete to existing color coated stucco WITH a smooth coat.. THEN paint the smooth coat...... WILL THIS WORK?

A person should never, ever, ever, pour a bonding agent into a mixer full of color coat materials,"usually 8 bags or roughly 800 pounds of cementitious color coat as a rule"Why? The color coat cementitious materials will dilute the bonding agent to uselessness.You apply the bonding agent directly to the wall, then proceed as usual.I have included a video of what (I) do when applying weld Crete prior to a color finish. Remember this is me, I don't wish to be yelled at if someone out of ignorance "not knowing" does not fully understand the process, I am simply showing my preferred methods.

Your videos strongly promote the Weld-Crete as a bonding agent but I think they're referring to cementatious color coats. Please advise and thank you for the great, informative lessons.
Howdy Richard dude, good question, Larsons, 'Weld Crete,' is to be applied on any painted surface that one wants to apply stucco over or can it can be used for concrete to concrete and a few other options too, like killing the suctions from some surfaces so the finish coats don't dry to fast.
However, when you get into stucco acrylics such as Sto, Dryvit, Stucco-flex, Carsons, BMI, la Habra, or Western stucco acrylic finishes all of these companies and many that I have not mentioned come with a primer that each brand recommends to warranty this acrylic finish.
For example, you want to apply BMI acrylic stucco finish, you first clean the wall then apply BMI's primer,
not a bonding agent.

Howdy Sydney. I personally allow the bonding agent to dry, weld-create last, or work for up to ten days if necessary, before applying any finish.
I mainly use it for bonding new color finishes to painted surfaces. Thus if it is still wet or tacky, the blue will interfere with the chosen color, can't have that.🍻

hi I started trying to build a feature using old concrete rocks from a dig out . They are loose and crumbly but I really want to build up and cover them but when I made a mortar mix it didnt bond well so shall I use a bonding agent first or can I just completely cover everything and get away with that? . Morning luanna lovell, No worries, First of all Nothing sticks to a dusty surface. The bonding agents or liquid lath as some folks call these are mainly for painting on a wall for a color finish or a skim coat to be applied to a surface or concrete to concrete.
What you need is a cementitious type mortar such as poly bond which we use to adhere styrofoam to walls or a thin set tile mortar such as flexbond which is mainly used for attaching tiles.
It will be easier for you to find and use the flex bond as it's sold at the large local hardware stores,
(home Depot and Lowes)
Lastly, both of the above products and or portland cement plaster will work but you have to pressure wash all the loose stuff.
Nothing sticks to dust.

Ive had another thought.. What if I were to completely cover the rocks with cement? It wont show the rocks underneath but Im wondering if it will hold everything together and I can smooth it all too? Your thoughts on this?
Hello luanna lovell, this will work, however if you don't pressure wash the old cement rocks very well at least take a water hose and thoroughly soak and clean with a jet stream the loose dust, dirt ,grime and moss for the best strength and suction.
Any dust and your new work will crack!
There is no product I'm aware of that adheres to dusty surfaces.

Evening Max, The Sika Concrete Bonding Adhesive and Acrylic Fortifier are used instead of water to mix cement plaster for just that purpose, it does indeed add stickiness.

Howdy Omar, excellent question. I was applying a skim coat or basecoat in this video. Not a color finish.
I prefer full strength for adhering base or skim coats to painted stucco surfaces.
Full strength Weld-Crete over a painted stucco surface is a different story. In the description is a video of why I dilute this bonding agent.
I do this stuff for a living. Anyone else, do as the cans or bottles tell you as I wish no blame for more than thirty years for my intricate material knowledge.
All should realize, Weld-Crete is made for concrete over concrete but can also be used for thin layers of stucco finish coats over painted surfaces, as because it is so strong, I often am forced to dilute it. 😏

Good evening Cookey Dude, if your wall is really clean as from pressure washing, you just apply a single coat, no saturation is necessary.
Remember nothing adhere to a dirty surface, not even Weld-Crete, if a bonding agent won't adhere with dirt or dust on a wall, nor will any stucco/plaster or cement adhere for long.

The point I was trying to make was that the other bonding agent are also used by many plastering professionals too.
My material yard in Oakland (Westside) just happens to stock Weld-Crete, actually I think they stock the other two I show in this video too.

We use Weld Crete over lauan "flats" (movie set walls) in the film industry. when plastering structolite. Other brands of bonding agents work fine, but we add tint so there are no "holidays" or missed spots. As Kirk said, Weld Crete comes blue, so that step is done before you start. ....someone asked if it could be used over foam. Yes it can. I glued/screwed 2" of foam on the exterior of my cinder block crawl space walls for the insulation from cold here in the mountains, and it's held the stucco in place for 10 years now. For stucco thickness, I did two coats. Foam, Weld Crete, stucco. Weld Crete, stucco. It looks as good as it did when new.

which foam board did you use? Did you dig out around exterior foundation to also insulate below grade or only put foam on visibly exposed block? For your glue, did you use a caulk for this? Also did you put foam right against block or did you put a weatherproofing sealer on you blocks ahead of time?
My home is vinyl siding and about 3 feet of exposed block foundation. I can't find much info on this online, most insulate inside crawl. I figured if I insulated from the outside, a vapor barrier on crawl floor will be sufficient rather than running it all up the walls. I have been watching a ton of Kirk's videos to see how I would go about plastering the painted cinder block foundation. I figured if I could plaster around the exterior it would help keep the resilient critters out. Many holes and gaps in blocks from 1959 and spray foam isn't cutting it. But man if I am able to insulate and seal all my gaps! Anyway, I apologize for the novel but I am a 1st time new homeowner with a home that has more going on than anticipated and trying to diy everything possible to save but Im also terrified to do something that causes more issues. Even if you don't see this, your comment alone helped a ton just gotta research a little more.

@@courtneyn.9205 HI Courtney. I used regular polystyrene white bead board (because that's what the local small town lumber store carries). The pink or blue extruded foam is stronger and stiffer, but I used what was available. I did dig below grade, and sloped 2 feet of foam away from the structure, mostly to keep moisture away from the wall, but also as additional insulation. There's a website about shallow footing insulation in Scandinavia (sorry, I don't remember it's title) that Ifound when researching moving to a cold climate. My knee wall is 4' deep, but I chose to head the insulation outward, not downward, based on the info on that site. I first rolled a couple of coats of elastomeric paint on the block (the year I framed the house), and did the foam when we got back the following spring. I glued the board with spray foam after testing to see if it melted the board. I used the hardened, self tapping long blue masonry screws that have to have a pilot drilled first. I didn't stucco the wall for a few days, so everything would be cured and solid before adding weight. ....Oh, the sloping in-ground foam is no plastered. It's closed cell, so isn't supposed to absorb water, but I wrapped it in heave black poly as another layer. The foam on the wall just butts down onto it maybe a foot below grade. I flashed the top of the foam with galvanized sheet metal (don't remember the gauge, but it's the regular hardware store/lumber stuff... maybe 18 to 22 gauge I just don't remember). It was easy enough to bend using boards as a metal brake. I topped that using log siding installing log siding on three walls, and stucco over lath on the last wall. Anyway, that's MY novel length explanation, and the foam helps keep the space from freezing. ....if you can repoint (mortar) the gaps between blocks, it'll be stronger. If the wall is in good shape, foam should stay in place if screwed and glued, then protected with stucco or whatever keeps the critters out (unless water gets behind it, so flash it) Good luck with your project.
@@StuccoPlastering Weld Crete is great stuff. Based on my film industry experience, I finished two kitchen walls with a tight skim of structolite over 1/2 plywood, only using mesh drywall tape over the seams. I ran the tape (it has enough adhesive to hold it in place), then rolled the wall with the blue glue. The structolite is only thick enough so the perlite didn't roll on the wall as I troweled. I left it as "live" raw plaster walls eleven years ago, and it still looks great. I really thought I might get tape line cracks since it's over R-19 exterior walls, with possible expansion/contraction of the plywood, but that somehow hasn't been the case. The ceiling is wood, so I didn't have to deal with that. Anway, Courtney;s comment came up in my email, so here I am blabbing again. Thanks for your video.

Lowe's only had one bonding agent and it was Quikrete bonding agent. On the bottle it said to mix with mortar. Can you just paint it on like you did the WeldCrete? I know your a busy man Kirk. I hope I don't ask too many questions. Let me know if I'm a bother.
Howdy Emma, no worries, you are correct my friend paint or roll on the Quikrete directly to the wall.
FYI, the sika can be used instead of water to add to a mix but I only do that with tile grouts or plaster slurries, both very rarely.
