Age of Mythology is RTS Campaign Done RIGHT

- I played this once a LONG time ago, but now that I've had a LOT more Age of 2/4 experience, I'm expecting to enjoy things OODLES more. Let's start with the campaign!!

While playing the campaign I was wondering why the game seemed so much harder then I remembered.... then I remembered how my much younger self would just use the cheat "O CANADA" to get laser bears as soon as I encountered a mission that was frustrating me.
I was a connoisseur of the flying hippo, personally
I'd just use "wrath of the Gods" and spam natural disasters until I won LOL
I remember those bears with the Canada flag capes lmao.
we've all "pandoras box"-ed until we got the god power we wanted every now and then
For me that counted as cheating... but "Trojan Horse For Sale" and "Junk Food Night" were absolutely OK. Oh, to be 10 again...
I was gonna say that this one was already great and they just had to not fuck everything up, but then I remembered Reforged is a thing that exists
They even had a couple beta periods where they collected feedback and made real changes to the game! I shouldn't be excited by this, but I am!
They still managed to fuck some stuff up but it was all UI stuff, the gameplay elements are improved which is a blessing
@@Doost311which is how game previously were made. Brings a tear almost
I like the gameplay changes in broad strokes but I do think the campaign could use a gameplay pass as I don't think it was recalibrated with the new gameplay very well. Also some missions are overtuned as hell.
IMO the decay of the RTS genre is caused by devs skipping singleplayer campaigns and trying to force immediately an esports scene without having a community around the game in the first place.
Not to beat a dead horse but it really makes you realize how shitty certain recent campaigns are at a fundamental level. Older games just had a better ability to introduce a setting, a theme, and a concept in an exciting way.
I'm going to specifically NOT single out any game developers that we're all thinking of, because this is a struggle that a lot of devs encounter... games benefit from being more than just fun, and more than just good software
My guess is because there are no longer any AAA RTSes, and Indie studios will focus their limited sources on replayability.
Love Day9 playing this. YES YES YES.
oh man if you gonna do this entire campaign on titan eventually i can't wait, i've been traumatized by some of the missions, its gonna be a good time
Im just into the atlantean ones and titan amd my god
The voice lines from this game are still engrained in my everyday vocabulary nearly twenty years later 😂

The music also😊

Of course it was done right, it was made back when RTS was still a respected genre that publishers were willing to fund. Now all we have are indies and they just don't have the budget and enough employees in enough different roles to ensure a decent campaign.
This comment only makes sense in a world where Warcraft reforged doesn’t exist.
It was absolute possible they messed this up so it is certainly not “of course it was done right”.
Man I feel like I’ve come full circle. AoM was my first RTS. Then Day9 taught me how to *actually* play an RTS with StarCraft 2 tips. And now both of us are playing AOM again.
I love to see it.
So true, more games should put a teaser trailer cinematic in the beginning of their tutorials. They're usually just good enough at providing context to potential customers, so might as well use them in-game.
Reign of Chaos did a great job at this as well.
AoM remains my favorite RTS campaign.
This was one of my top 5 childhood strategy games, so hyped to see it remastered!
Word! Age 1 and 2, warcraft 3, empire earth, age of mythology! Such gems damn!
Hotkeys are mapped to the literal location they're at until the bottom row, so the keys physically correspond to their location in the unit commands.
As long as you are learning into the game it is a good grip and reference. But if it's your 20+ game, you have common commands that S is for (S)top or A is for (A)ttack and that could vary in games like row 2 column 3 here and column 2 row 3 there, but muscle memory is a thing.
Just a heads up. Out of all the Age games AOM campaign is considered the least handholding of them all which actually contributes to the immersion despite the older engines. There are moments where experimentation demonstrates itself rather than step by step instructions. In the end every mission takes in account of what you done previously on earlier missions and implements them in a way that you explore yourself if you remember it
Age of Mythology is the Half-Life of RTS.
Oh yes.
I think you worded it confusingly so I'll try to clarify it: The game obviously does not keep a record of your tactics. What it does is generally teach you things once and then expects you to use it.
SO much nostalgia! Prostagma my brothers!
My absolute favorite thing about Day9 since forever has always been that pure, unrestrained joy.
and plus a redesigned Chinese faction, another new pantheon, and potentially a 4th major god across all the civs.
Really hope Sean sticks with the game and that campaign. some of the later levels on Titan are no fucking joke, they were way harder for me than the hardest Broodwar/Starcraft 2 missions.
They're damn fun too. Well, most of 'em are.
give me your fastest scroll speed
you cant handle my fastest scroll speed
I can’t wait to see the custom maps people create.
Gators with frickin laser beams attached to their head!? Dr. Evil approves!
Cloak and Dagger
Two steps ahead
Day9TV can I please have more, just a little more..
Yeah the campaing is goated
And a massive one too. I dont know if they cut content for retold. I sure hope they took out some of the most gimmiky ones tho 😅
"Ne" is greek for yes
It's painful in the second level to see Day9 constantly ask "Where's the food?" when all his villagers started right beside a cornucopia of Chickens.
I am proud of him for immediately recognizing the Auto-Villager Priority as a trap. Because for Greeks especially, _it is._ Greeks need to assign villagers to Gather Favor, as well, and that Priority system _does not allow for that._
The new voice acting is so bad
Fun fact: the reason you're conflicting with norse buildings a lot when changing hotkeys is because norse buildings are primarily built by their infantry, who would need the stop and attack move commands to still exist.
AoE4 is the Essence Engine that Relic uses for Company of Heroes. AoM: Retold is using some version of the bang engine that has been used for AoM and AoE3.
these are actually the worst default hotkeys ive ever seen. ALT Z for stop lol
I think Day 9's greek pronunciation has leveled up to 4
Obligatory Balkan Fun Fact:
"Neh" is Greek for "Yes".
In Bulgaria (to the north), "Neh" means "No".
Did you mean it means “no” in Bulgaria?
@@goink3368 yikes, must've been sleeping while writing that. Fixed, thanks!
Is he still planning on finishing shadow of the erdtree?
Day9 Age of Hotkeys
Really enjoyed watching this. Hope Day9 does a playthrough of the whole campaign
The music in these early 00 rts games is just amazing
VULOME!
btw is the amazing intro cinematic still in this remake?
god, it's been so long since i played an age of mythology games lol.
I don't think I'm going to play this game because the UI/hotkey/minimap on wrong side issues would drive me insane and I personally don't really like AoE style micro that much anyway but man this game does some stuff SO well. Really cohesive and stylish graphics/unit designs and cool upgrades for players to choose between. That centaur volley ability is awesome. Hydras growing heads as they fight is amazing
"Age of empires 2, that still my fav RTS to play right now" * __* there's hope
Maista! Vulome! Me and my friends still make that sounds for no reason😂
Thanks for nostalgia Sean.
Alt-Z what????
Oh thank god he’s doing it again!
This is my favourite game of all time and it’s always been a tremendous heartbreak that Day9 has so little content here for this
Lmao that smooth stormgate diss 😂
What minute?
The fact that they left out the Chinese civs is a really good sign. Goes to show they knew these really werent up to par.
Hopefully, they'll add them later and do Chinese mythology justice.
Confirmed as the first expansion! Looking forward to what they do with the greater creative freedom building a campaign from scratch, seeing as their level designers made some positive changes to levels like Circe's island.
I'm really curious what the second expansion Civ will be. I think the most likely would be Aztec, but I could also see India (although the fact that Hinduism is still a practiced religion might make that unlikely!)
@@CompanionPrism Shinto seems a logical one. If you're looking for Pantheons you'd have to dig into lesser known religion. I believe the druidic religion of the English Isles is a viable option.
@@josephreynolds2401 There's some obvious ones. Celt, Aztec, Persian and Hindu for instance.
@CompanionPrism Aztec seems like the best fit, especially since the way they'd gain favor is obvious - sacrificing people.
This remains one of the few RTS games I actually enjoy. Loved this game as a kid.
I just finished watching your VOD from a decade ago earlier this week, then booted up this one afterwards, and as soon as you set the difficulty to Titan I immediately had PTSD flashbacks.
stormgate seething right now
This game absolutely mogs Stormgate in every way.
Oh yes ofc someone needed to do the stupid comparaison with Stormgate. It wouldn't be a proper TH-cam comment section otherwise.
@@Frodonsake24 be honest, how much did you donate to frost giant
@@Numenorean921 imma be honest : zero dollars. Absolutely nothing. Unlike most people, I understand how game development works and I understand what an early access is.
Okay I gotta ask. Why are people mad at Stormgate? I've been out of the loop, it seemed too "we're making an esport" for me.
I love how he casually beat titan mission by not overextending
Hell, last time I had such a good introduction to an adventure in an RTS was Warcraft 3...
Impossible Creatures. Please tell me you know what that is.
@@njmfff I remember that game exists, never played it.

Not me watching Day9 play AoM in bed at 4AM...😭😭😭
Modern RTS games really should just come with Blizzard/DoTA mouse controls and C&C keyboard controls by default.
Hell yeah was waiting for some gameplay
It is, indeed, Boat O'Clock day9
I’ve had my eye on this game on steam for like a decade, guess now is the time to finally check it out now that it seems to have had new life breathed into the series.
Edit: the griping over the hot keys was hilarious. I barely play rts games, and certainly not well, and hearing some of the keybinds even threw me for a loop.
Yeah, so hydras just wreck everything even on highest difficulty....
omg watching you go through the struggle of the hotkeys was so perfectly in sync with my reactions hahah hotkeys are a strange for anyone who has played rts before
They are grid hotkeys.
@@kitgautier1658 Which has never made sense to me. Who actually navigates that way?
@@dojelnotmyrealname4018 I do. I think it's super-helpful for people who play a lot of different RTS games that use different hotkeys (for things like which building to build or which unit to build); it's easy for me to memorize the location of the icons in each grid.
For example, with grid hotkeys, I know that the basic unit from each building will be Q, and the next unit is W, and so on. I don't have to remember that this game uses G for that first basic unit while this other game uses P (based on the name of the unit).
I acknowledge that unit commands (such as attack-move and stop) are the hotkeys that can be negatively affected by a grid, though.
39:15 Man .... the more i see of other RTS games the more i realize how bad Stormgate is. Here you get to make meaningful choices and unlocking cool new units, upgrades and powers as you play. This is just beaming with cool themes and personality. In my opinion this single screen is more interesting than all of the units/factions ive seen so far in Stormgate combined.
U dont ever see other rts on early access, SG is early acces. Not finished
@@peterlaanguila5098 If game developers don't want their game to be criticized for lacking features maybe they shouldn't release it in an unfinished state. Especially when the microtransactions work fine.
@@XsyqExactly. If it's buyable, it's out.
I faked being sick so I could stay home and play age of mythology. More than once and I'd do it again if I could!
Will the full playthrough be done by Sean? I really really enjoyed watching this!
the thing with saying dumb stuff to troll people is that there are literally people out there that say that stuff and mean it
Voulome once shame on you, voulome twice... You can't voulome.
Too bad the UI is so ass though
man they really buggered the voice acting in this remaster

This was my very first online game ever as a kid all the way back in like 2000. My mom's boyfriend told me I could play online and my mind was blown. I was literally playing the old AoM earlier this year lol. Didn't even know they made this new version. Saw your video and immediately started watching. Excited to play it myself, definitely buying it asap
Oh my god you had me cracking up. Happy Sean is hilarious.
I love how enthusiastic Day9 is for this game, i really wish spellforce 3 would be on his radar. It would be a blast to watch him play that!
Something just really sounds right about a unit costing 18 Lightning Bolts.
i like the small changes to the missions like removing the enemy tower that blocks you from getting gold on mission 2
I love how the bowling ball brain hydra spam is working 😂 This is one of my all time top games and I’m so happy the remake is good. I hope you get into it!
Was watching the twitch vos earlier but it is so much easier to watch them in youtube since you dont have to click 300 times to find the vod
Given that Day9 was confused as to why A, S, and D hotkeys were set the way they were, is this the first RTS he's played with grid hotkeys? Honest question; I'm not trying to be snarky here.
He plays AoE2. I'm sure he was surprised it wasn't representative of that experience.
@@josephreynolds2401 yeah, but if I remember correctly, he plays AoE2 Definitive Edition, right? I'm pretty sure that game uses grid hotkeys by default also.

I don't know if done right. more done okay. The campaign definitely seems to suffer from "wasn't redesigned with the gameplay redesign".
