Going back to his earliest acting jobs, Macchio was this 17, 18yr old teen able to convincingly play 14yr olds. That would have helped him get jobs as producers prefer older actors (over 16 they can work more hours per day, and they're usually better at learning lines and understanding directions, scene concepts etc.) if they look and sound right.
