To be fair he never came out but told his partner he loved him. There should be no need to "come out" but just be yourself regardless of who you love. He didn't make a big fuss about it and neither should you.
This is good news for tennis. Hope other players now and in the future will follow suit. As for the international dimension, that's easy: don't have tournaments in unfriendly countries.
Especially for the WTA with the end of the year championships in Saudi Arabia!!! I usually watch all of this, but I will not be able to watch for 5 years!!!
Not many players will come out. It hurts there monetary sponsorships, which it shouldn't, and in male sports there is a stigma. Now in tennis there are two guys or two women across the net from each other and it seems there are definitive boundaries about each other's personal lives. When you think about it there are rankings up to 1000 on the ATP. The fact that numerous players are in the closet is very telling of the sport.
Good for Da Silva. I don't think it will encourage other male players to come out, mostly because of the fear of losing lucrative sponsorship deals, but this is often how acceptance and equality are reached, by slow steps.
Excellent news! Elite men’s tennis has been a stubborn bastion of macho homophobia for too long and hopefully this is the first chip away at that intolerant edifice. To those who say ‘no-one cares anymore’ and ‘stop drawing attention to yourself’. Tell that to the thousands of men worldwide who are languishing in custody or even facing execution simply for being who they are. Big well done from me to this splendid athlete.
@@gregmcfarnon1140 When asked about the subject, the very civilise, urbane Roger Federer conceded it was a homophobic environment. @gerardmackay8909 You mention two players, neither of whom have been on the tour for years and I have never heard Federer, Murray nor anyone else say a word on the subject. Listen I have no doubt men's pro sport - any sport- is likely to have macho overtones and an international sport such as tennis will hardly be a platform of liberal views but "bastion of macho homophobia" and "intolerant edifice" sounds rather exaggerated. It's not really a subject which is discussed much publicly among tennis players and nor should it be.
Tricky because it is international, nonetheless important. Takes a lot of courage to come out and will it affect the player, so perhaps the ATP should have a plan in place.
In an interview, Brian Valhaley was asked why he didn't come out. He responded that it would leave you completely isolated on the tour. That's a shame. Playing professional tennis is hard enough without the added pressure of staying in the closet and having to hide who you really are. It's a disgrace that American football is more progressive than tennis. I hope he is able to create some change.
Because everything groundbreaking makes headline news. But you are right, hopefully we will get to point where no one feels the need to "come out" in order to feel safe to live their lives as their authentic selves
Keep it to yourself players don’t be made t9 be a mascot activist to promote agendas that don’t benefit you. Don’t feel pressured to ruin your life wait till your career is done.
The fact that there are more out women players than men means women are braver, and as a man it’s ridiculous more male players aren’t out. Use the women for inspiration the out hero spot light is waiting…
Lesbianism is slightly less frowned upon. Not that lesbians don't face any bigotry ( they do!) but generally there is less of a taboe on girls kissing than guys kissing.
It will be a breath of fresh air when this is no longer an issue. People should live their truths. We really have to get over this stigma. It shouldn't define them. It's how great they are at their craft that matters.
Interesting... Personally: I think one would play their best tennis when happy and feel truly looked after. There's enough countries in the world where one can be safe to not worry about going where not free or safe. Beliefs and ideals over money any day!! 🤑👎

Why come out? I don't come out! Playing tennis has nothing to do with what you do in your bedroom. It's your business only. Honestly, you do not need to tell everyone what your sex preference is.
If other top players posted a positive response to his post then maybe other players will find it easier to come out.
