    The last scene of Picard playing the flute and remembering how to play that gorgeous piece of music even though he had lived a whole life as someone else in just a few minutes may be one of the greatest and most emotional endings of any TV show ever.

      @tomatodamashi 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      I liked Voyager but I always felt a certain feeling of disappointment that they didn't push the concept further. I was hoping by the end that their ship would be an amalgam of various alien components salvaged/traded/etc in the effort to get them home. I expected greater conflict between the Maquis and the Starfleet crew, but all of that was never deeply explored. Enterprise's journey into the Expanse was a far better version of Voyager's Year of Hell.

      @@tomatodamashi Me too - Voyager is still my go to series when i need to retreat and relax. And I agree - they seemed to just have vanquished the Marquis after "State of Fllux" and "Basics 1 and 2". They let it pop up here and there with episdoes like "Meld" - but I think thhey just wanted to get on with the storyline. Afterall the Marquis were only a handfful of ppl compared with the Voyager crew. I wish they had kept more of the Equinox crew - I think there was more opportunity to see how traumatised and alone Star Fleet personel cope with re-integrating withh a well adjusted StarFleet crew again, after everything they endured. l I wish Voyager too had a greater role in the Prime universe, somewhere in the movies at least. Altho I suspect Kate Mulgrew wanted a break. She did say her Voyager career caused her to miss much time with her growing children. And their version of the inner light...OMG - I just sob every time.

      @sidpheasant7585 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That was a really great episode - how to fit so very much into 40 minutes? How to fit a whole other life into a few minutes?
      The show achieves with us what the story achieved with its character!
      Believe it or not one of my good (Trek-loving) colleagues regards this episode as lame. He is a few years younger than me, though. Think of Picard's secret longing to have lived a more conventional life with wife and kids. Deeply touching in all ways. In one of the movies, Picard cries at the death of his nephew - the closest thing he had to that family.
      And then Picard meets Kirk that time, and both dwell on the idea of being married to their ships - sometimes the real-life fate of the Navy officer...
      We should not let it mean anything to us out here in "the real world", yet we do and it does.
      In the original poem "The Inner Light" (which George Harrison also built on), we read "Without going out of my door, I can know the ways of heaven".
      Perhaps we should amend that to "some of/part of" the ways of heaven, but the Holy Spirit came to me in my bedroom, and from that moment I KNOW this is the truth.
      Star Trek did this kind of thing for us, and there was always a fierce debate as to whether the show was religious (Roddenberry was determined that it was not, and was not even such a nice guy, yet he had the vision - perhaps literally, and I am pretty sure there is divinity in there somewhere, in spite of everything).

    • @alpsskiingrocks
      @alpsskiingrocks 3 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      It is actually better. The original score was done with a smaller pick-up studio orchestra as the entire film was made on a smaller budget than the original ST Motion Picture which was over budget and over blown. I remember reading at the time they used a skeleton orchestra with 20 violins as opposed to a full orchestra like London Symphonies which would have over 40. Smaller wind section, too.

      Definitely. Too bad that nowadays, in the "deconstruction era", they doesn't seem to want to make at least one scene like that where we could appreciate the titular ship in the show in it's full glory. I also always liked this main theme much more than any other. Probably because back in the day the Trek of my childhood was TNG :)

    • @ChrisWeston42

      I think they ought to have done that with the TNG movies, especially when the introduced the Enterprise E. That said, I think First Contact was a masterful Trek film. They should have worked it into the end of Generations somehow, but I can’t image how that would have worked.

      The vocals, performed by singer Louie Jean Norman (b. 1913, d. 2005) were only in the 2nd season opening title recorded in the 1967. Season 1 used the "cello version" (a more subdued arrangement also performed in this concert) and to avoid paying music royalties to the vocal performer for Season 3, yet another opening rendition was recorded using just a very theremin-like organ sound for the main theme instead of a human voice, screwing Loulie Jean out of continued royalties. Or so the producers thought. But then came the perpetual reruns, and because it is widely considered the best arrangement, most foreign markets ran Star Trek with only the 2nd season title sequence, so Loulie continued to receive her fee after all :)

    The main melody from the First Contact theme, the one that starts around 1:04:55, is one of the most beautifully unfolding melodies I've ever heard. When it crescendos with the cymbal crash, no matter how many times I've heard it, I still get goosebumps. Jerry Goldsmith was such an amazing musician!
    Also, I'm so glad that they arranged a suite from "The Inner Light" Next Generation episode. In addition to being an excellent arrangement of that music, it reminds me in part why that is one of my favorite Next Generation episodes. Speaking of goosebumps, when Picard says "oh, it's me, I'm the someone" at the end of that episode... such a powerful moment. One of Patrick Stewart's best performances in my opinion.

      dude, i walked down the aisle at my wedding to the vitamin string quartet version of the first contact theme. no one there really knew where it was from, so it was me and my wife's little secret. my cousin joked later on that she was surprised i didnt try and sneak any star trek references into the entire wedding. little did she know :)

      The GNP Crescendo 'best of star trek' CD did such a good job with the Ressikan flute suite, I was surprised to see the thing show up here but it's neat that it's been used in other places.

    Like many I have been watching since the original tv series. At the 10 second mark the goosebumps came and then the floodgates opened. Wow, you just don't realize how much this music has impacted you over the years until you sit and listen to this. I find it interesting that I immediately knew each song...

    My earliest and fondest memory of star trek music was the music from str trek II. My dad sat with me one christmas when I was less than 5 years old..... Captivated by this film. Obviously I cried when spock died but my dad said..... "He will be back..... Vulcans are a unique people". And he was correct. I grew up with TNG as my staple.... And i still watch it over and over....being in my mid 40's even now. My dad recently passed and I played the music from both star trek 2 and TNG because we watched that together. Of course I cried my eyes out, but they were happy tears more than sad. Hearing the music that has spanned the franchise brings me hope for a better future for us all. And for me, all the enjoyment from the TV shows, films, and the recent new animated and timeline. Thank you for recreating happy memories

    This is absolutely sublime. Pretty much perfect recreation of the sound track. I think the dislikes on this video are because it ends.
