My brother when he was young tipped Match heads into a tiny piece of pipe to make a home made mini fire cracker . When he crimped the opening shut . A grain of Match head ignited and whole pipe exploded and severely cut up his hand . Don't try copying this bomb/bow . You risk blowing your fingers off ramming down the Match heads
Great advice! I was interested in this contraption when I thought the power source was all tension. Now I'm content to stick with muzzle loading, or proper airguns
When I was 10, Some family friends and I made the same thing, using 30.06 spent casings.. We were smart enough to know they could explode making them. . We used a nail head as a tamper, to pack the match heads tight. When tamping the heads, it was done lightly.. One guy built a wooden box, he put one in it on the ground, lit the fuse and nothing happened.. After a minute, he went to take the cover off the box, reached in to pick up the casing and it exploded. His hand was mutilated and had brass shrapnel in it.. Dangerous to make and they are very powerful.

better off trying to find a way to make it work with actual gunpowder, it's not good to use match tips like this. there are idiots out there that like to suck or chew on match tips. ingesting the chemical compounds in them is actually LESS harmful than inhaling such a high concentration of those compounds. light a couple dozen stick matches in a row and huff them up, STILL less harmful than taking the tips off and using them as a primer. we used to make chemical weapons out of some of those compounds, they were banned at geneva.
I'm very surprised how well that works with materials used. A weapon of long ago was a crossbow with pouch in string(s) for small rock SEARCH stone bow.
What is the ignition source? Looks like a bit of broom handle hits the back of a rivet in a metal tube (aluminum?). Yes there are ground up match sticks but what lights the powdered match?
Pretty sure they are strike anywhere matches, so the concussive force does it. Idk how those matches work tho or if crushing them negates the potential reaction so I cld be wrong.
Looks like the same concept as a fire piston or diesel engine. The over pressure heats the internals to combustion temp and the fuel explodes. But like wise, might be wrong.
I just started watching this and I'm reading comments at the same time. I'm guessing probably friction, possibly assisted by a textured surface or some kind of Flint mechanism. The matches are most likely ground up to provide more surface area to the combustible, thus a quicker more explosive reaction. I didn't even know it was a composable propellant involved as I am only a little over a minute into this video. That being said at first glance I thought it was solely propelled by the release of kinetic energy.

It's blows my mind that we all experimented with match heads as children ! We should cut Matt says off of lots of matches and then make cylindrical tubes out of using pencil or cigar casing as a form.... Put all the match heads in there... Close one end up and then the other thing was open of course.. . Shoot them up and sometimes they would fly like pretty far like maybe 50 feet.... Pretty fun! Just goes to show what kids will do to entertain themselves when your parents are alcoholics!
if people like this kind of content have a look at the youtube channel JoergSprave formerly known as the slingshot channel...he has done a lot of builds like these over the years and is very entertaining to watch, used to be primarily builds based on slingshots but over time he has done bows and arrows, crossbows, pcp fired darts, etc...very entertaining channel and he has a great sense of humour
Funny how so many people say they had a similar idea, I’m 25 now and made something extremely close when I was 10 lol I played red dead revolver a lot as a kid and thought it would be cool to make an airsoft bow. I used some old wooden dowels from a laundry drying rack my mom was getting rid of and drilled a whole in the tip big enough for a bb then inserted a silicone earphone tip as some sort of chamber to hold the ammo in place. There was a hole in the center of the bow for an arrow/bolt to be guided through and a nail slotted through the middle of said arrow from side to side in the hole of the bow to stop it in place after drawing and releasing. The bungee cord would slam the bolt into the nail with enough force to eject the bb with a pretty sharp shot for at least 60ft before dropping
Impact also explodes the Phosphorus, try making a hole on a piece of wood with a nail, filling it with match heads, and then hitting it with the nail again It explodes like a gunshot
