I’ve got an XPS 15, which is why I was drawn into your video instead of scrolling past. Because I already own one, there were no great revelations- but what kept me watching was your presenting style and the professional setup. Because of that, you’ve got another subscriber, and I’ll check out your other videos, including any new ones that you post. Thanks, and well done.
That may be the nicest comment I’ve ever received! Thank you! I need to post a long term review. This machine has definitely been a good investment for me.
@@MichaelJLong not at all, it’s well deserved. There are lot of good creators on TH-cam who don’t seem to get the recognition or success that their talents and efforts deserve. I hope that you don’t turn out to be one of them, and that your subscriber numbers climb and keep on climbing. Regardless, I’ll continue to enjoy your videos as long as you keep posting them, so the thanks are all mine.
The fans are ok. Not too loud but they are audible. They don’t come on unless I’m doing more intense processing like gaming or video editing. All quiet for YT and email. 😁👍🏻
Loved your review! However, I love what Dell does with their XPS laptops but I see so many you tubers say they had some obstacle at some point as to something not working properly and had to send back or deal with Dell Support, which becomes a nightmare. Which is why I am so skeptic of buying Dell. I am not that tech savvy, but through watching videos I can learn about what matters. Just so many options and use cases to shuffle through which makes Macs a bit more easier to purchase. However, I still have a certain love for Windows because that’s what I’m used too.
You’re 100% correct. I do love the machine but it has its negatives. (I need to do a long term review.). The XPS is great in si many ways, but I have had to have a couple of service calls including a main board replacement. Knowing what I do now about the M1 Macs, I might get one of those if I were starting all over again. They are very powerful machines.
Hi and thank you for the video. I can only get xps 15" with touch screen, not dure why they stoped offering nontouch. What do you think about there touch screen?
I haven’t used their touchscreen, but it seems like it would be good. I don’t like touchscreen devices very much since it gets fingerprints everywhere.
Hello. Thank you for making the video. Gave me good insight into this laptop. I have a couple questions. First if all, what is the maximum wattage that your monitor provides via its USB C port (the monitor you showed on this video)? While researching, I found that the Dell XPS 15 maxes out at 60W when being charged via a non dell charger, which would limit its performance. I have a Samsung wide screen monitor with a USB C port that would provide up to 95W, which is still lower than the 130W charger the laptop comes with, so not sure if your monitor is the same and if so have you seen a significant reduction in the Dell XPS 15 performance? Thank in advance for your feedback!
I didn’t know they limited non-Dell chargers. Boo! My monitor does 65W and it will drain the battery if I’m doing a LOT of heavy rendering/gaming etc. (but still lasts like 5~6 hours if I start with a full charge.) I have a RavPower charger that operates at 100W but still gives the same “low power charger “ warning.
@@MichaelJLong I see thank you for the reply. As for your RavPower charger, if you look at the bios under battery information while the charger is connected you would probably only see 65W even thought you are able to provide 100W with your charger. Here is where I found the information about 3rd party charger limitations. www.dell.com/community/XPS/Understanding-Dell-laptops-and-USB-C-power-sources/td-p/7412266
Here in Canada the "New XPS 15" with 11th gen chips has yet to be released and we are also waiting for the "New" AMD G5. Dell seems to be delaying both. I hope they will be available by the end of the year. Given display driver chip shortages and double booking by China, there is a risk of this not happening. Here are some tech issues and solutions to add to your knowledge base. One thing that has started happening in the last week or so is that the XPS 17 2020 is having issues with coming out of sleep mode. The keyboard lights up, but the display does not activate nor do the displays connected to an external dock activate. I made a change to the goodfinger driver in the device manager under the power management tab to not let the reader shut down when in sleep mode. Still observing this solution. Have there been some intel component updates and a BIOS update as well as a bunch of Windows updates so I can't guess where the issue is? The 1650 GPU is adequate for everyday use and light gaming and light video editing. I also have a Dell dock that the machine is plugged into constantly. Sometimes it loses track of the mouse, and I will have to disconnect the hub from the thunderbolt port on the laptop and reconnect it to the thunderbolt port to reconnect the attached devices. Another issue is that I have a USB light bar on top of my monitor attached to my Dell G5 and if the machine is in sleep mode the phantom power draw can draw down and shut down the laptop if left overnight. That seems to have been resolved in updates. Dell service has been ok. they arrived on-site and replaced fans and a motherboard in one case. When the G5 starts up sometimes the fans are slow to spin up and report an error. It can be ignored if you can feel air coming out of the vents. It's a sensor error and due to a low voltage, that gets sensed before startup is completed. The service met requirements and expectations. The technician was quick and efficient. Finally, I have an older XPS 13 with the ceramic white coloring and it has begun to slightly yellow over the last year after four years.
Why do you ‘need’ Windows? I’ve had two XPS’s in a row (& loved using them) but now I’m thinking about jumping to the M1X. If I can run MS Office on Apple Silicon, what do I need Windows for? Caveats: like you I’m NOT a gamer, I need productivity, power, discrete GPU but I’m not coding or app building or doing anything funky like Linux or Ubuntu etc. So, given that use case, why do I need Windows - or even x86?
Fair question. I’ve thought about the new Macs a lot. Apple silicon seems like a great platform. I don’t like not having control over the upgrade path. For me, Windows is a known quantity. I know it’s quirks and strengths. I used OSX in the past and could get used to it, but I’m not ready to make that jump right now...
hey I saw you got the Lexar 1667x UHS SD card! What do you think of them? I'm trying to upgrade my camera set up and saw how affordable these were so I am very strongly considering them for the price
Now that’s attention to detail! 😆 Love those cards. I have two 128GB and two 64GB. They’ve never failed and are super fast. Well worth spending a little extra. I try to find them in a 2x pack for sale on B&H or Amazon to save a little bit.
@@MichaelJLong awesome! the price seemed hard to bvelieve because I saw 2 128gb cards for $79.99. I'm saving up for a canon eos r6 and want to get the 15-35 rf lens
@@brandonxchang I love my R. I’m sticking with EF lenses because it’s a TON cheaper. Checkout the Tamron 17-35 f2.8-4 EF. From all accounts, it’s really good glass. (They also make a 35-150 that might be a future purchase for me.)
Great question: I wouldn’t call it a problem. The fans do kick in when I’m doing heavy rendering and I can hear them but they’re not distracting. The fans also come on at a lower level occasionally during “normal” use. (Browsing web, email, etc)

I this XPS 15 small enough to be used on a plane, do you think? (Economy class).
Yes - it will probably take up the whole tray. But I think it will fit. Great question - I’ll try this out in August!
How did you remove the intel sticker? The laptop looks so much better without it.
Razor blade and a lot of patience. Good luck my friend!
