    Bought one of these in April and absolutely would not be without it!.Best coffee ever! I don't mind that it takes a little longer - van life is meant to be slow lol!. The quality of the machine is amazing. There is no going back! Make sure to buy the double walled thermal coffee cups which keep it beautifully hot.

    That looks a right faff ;-). We have an aeropress for general coffee and a nano press for the morning shots. Both super easy to use and the puck for the aeropress pops into the bin super easy. Given the simplicty of the AeroPress and online love it gets it’s simple, cheap and easy to carry. This looks lovely and a feat of engineering but expensive, large (for a cali) and full on faff. Prefer to KISS in the Cali and leave the barista stuff for home.

    Hi Will.
    Great solution for off grid and love the fact that it is compact, although quite a fuss for a cuppa. As we don't go off grid often we use a sage bambino which requires 240V, but can fit in a bag in the bottom of the wardrobe. we set it up on a mat above the sink top in the evening which lets us make coffee at the touch of a button first thing in the morning. Note the sage gives instant steam and hot water which reduces the need for a electric kettle and makes excellent coffee.
    As always great info, cheers.

      This is an excellent suggestion for an on-grid coffee machine - certainly a lot less faff than say using an Aeropress for example which is what I used when my family and I spent 3 months in our Cali Ocean in 2020.

    Impressed with your commitment here. Fact you use a Lelit Mara at home tells me you’re into your espresso fix. Trying to get similar results on the road with your limiting factors? Respect. Like one of the commentators below I’m more just a straight black coffee type (no milk, no sugar) so I’m OK with espresso or pourover/immersion too. Everyone does v60 or equivalents or French Press - my suggestion would be try a tricolate. You can push Extraction Yields way past 22% without bitterness and get a tasty clean cup you could easily use the Bialetti frothier on to get an interesting white coffee. Enjoy.

    I do enjoy grinding my own coffee at home and once dialled in popping through my modified Gaggia classic, so I understand your need to grind on the go and try to retain some freshness, personally I use a Bialetti moka pot or Aeropress, to grind I go a little further and got myself a Knock hand grinder which is very good and will last a lifetime :)

    • @CampervanTime

      Sounds good. We both like our milk drinks so the steaming element is the big pull of the Bellman for us but the moka / aeropress are great alternatives if steaming isn’t needed 👍

    Hi. Interesting video. Can you get the pressure high enough to give a crema?

    • @CampervanTime
      @CampervanTime  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes and no. It won’t do a 9 bar extraction like a traditional espresso machine but if you extract the coffee with more like 2 bars of pressure on the gauge then yes, you get crema, but then the coffee tastes a little over extracted to me, so I tend to draw earlier (/lower pressure) and have a nicer espresso without the crema.

  • @peterbennett9
    @peterbennett9 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I think you could get a very similar result with far less faff with a moka pot and a bialetti milk frother, hardest part with getting perfect coffee extractions in a van is the grind i use a Comandante C40 and i grind my beans frozen so it doesn’t age and i dont have to chase grind size, i use a 6 cup moka pot

    • @CampervanTime
      @CampervanTime  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      We have a stovetop moka pot too but haven’t tried the Bialetti milk frother so don’t know how it compares to a steaming milk the traditional way. We were nervous about how much size and faff this would be but it’s another one of our hobbies (coffee making) so we thought we’d give it a try.

    Hand grinder - I use a Porlex Tall with ceramic conical burrs. Has 40 gram hopper capacity. Japanese designed and made. 12 grind settings with simple click adjustment system from fine (turkish) to coarse (french press). Bellman may be a challenge if you want 50-60 grams coffee from a hand grinder perhaps. I have been using an Aeropress camping.

      Nothing wrong at all with a Bialetti stovetop, makes great coffee! We tend to have some kind of steamed milk with most of our coffees hence the Bellman, but otherwise the Bialetti would be our choice 👍

  • @couplandsj
    @couplandsj 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Love your content, but you already said it in the video….this looks a major league faff….🤪😂 Not only that, the whole thing looks like you’re about to spill coffee beans all over the van and with a high likelihood of scalding yourself with boiling water …it looks so precarious balanced on the hob. A nice brew of Yorkshire tea is our beverage of choice….👍✌️Judging by the other comments on here, folks really must love their coffee, enjoy….☕️

    • @CampervanTime
      @CampervanTime  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You certainly do need to be careful with it but it’s quite secure on the hob. Usually we’d have the table out, pop top up and be standing while making this so much much safer and easier to control. The milk steaming sitting down is hard too! We do like to vary our content so there is something for everyone too 😀👍. But for simplicity you can’t beat a good tea 🫖 😁

    Looks fabulous do you find it significantly better than a Moka pot?

    • @CampervanTime
      @CampervanTime  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes we do - there are more options in terms of how you want to extract the coffee (ie what temp/pressure you extract it at), and obviously the benefit of proper steaming for the milk. This Bellman has better quality steam than my MaraX machine in the house!

    • @Dazza_Doo
      @Dazza_Doo 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Bellman is Espresso like quality, the Moka Pot seems like a steam-drip style (Percolated / American Joe). You can use the Bellman for either Espresso or weaker brews. There is a reason why Coffee is compressed into a puck and force feed hot water, there is a taste difference.

  • @lesleyjoanne782

      If someone comes up with a grinder we will be sorted lol i too have a machine at home so when away its been hard to get a decent cup!! Is the machine you have at home better than an automatic (i have a delonghi machine) do you think, in terms of coffee quality?

    • @CampervanTime
      @CampervanTime  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Grinder… erm.. there’s a few to choose from. www.bellabarista.co.uk/1zpresso-jx-hand-grinder.html for example. We don’t have one (yet) but I’m thinking about it. Machine at home, yes, much better than an automatic. We used to have a Jura and the coffee is miles apart in terms of taste and the milk frothing/steaming is totally different. It does take practice though !!

    • @lesleyjoanne782
      @lesleyjoanne782 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Inevitable that the automatic will die at some point, this is my second in 9 yrs! Last time I contemplated a more manual barista type one but chickened out. Next time…..
      I think when I’m in the van i will just take the appropriate ground coffee tbh too much time on coffee could take the whole holiday lol

    Great video and interesting machine!
    So we’re black coffee only and use a Picopresso for amazing espresso shots (with the accompanying mess). But, re. the grinder: don’t forget you will need a small scale to weigh out the beans unless you plan to bag them up at home. I’m using a 1zpresso JX for the grind - combined with a consistent weight of beans it works really well!

    • @CampervanTime
      @CampervanTime  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sounds great! We’re covered with this small scale as we’ve got a tiny fold up Joseph Joseph one in the van for cooking etc anyway, so we can be consistent with that part. I’ve been looking at the JX grinder and am considering one.

    • @Bob-wi3xj
      @Bob-wi3xj 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CampervanTime Well, no complaints about the JX - reliable Espresso grind good enough for my home machine, winds out easily to do the odd Bialetti grind. Expensive, but the cheaper ones I’ve tried are now at home grinding curry spices ;)

    The Lelit Mara X is a nice espresso machine but the grinder you use is so good. I would invest in a vacuum sealing bag machine and put your home ground coffee there. I doubt any none powered grinder would get close to the quality needed to outdo a vacuum packed grind from home. And deterioration is slow for the first week or two anyway if kept in a good box. An alternative is to use a can of nitrogen to purge the air out of a sealable storage box each time you close it. You can also use Argon but it will be more expensive. Also good for keeping your half drunk bottle of Chateau Lafite Rothschild from spoiling.

    • @CampervanTime
      @CampervanTime  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good point, you’re the second person in a week to suggest a vac pack machine for home, albeit for two separate reasons. Will investigate !

  • @KeepItSimpleSailor

    Bellman coffee maker is okay, and fills a need. But honestly, it’s a lot of fluffing about for not a lot of coffee. I only just manage to get two 400ml coffees from one run of the machine. Then it all needs disassembly and cleaning just to make another brew. I’m keeping mine, as I live on a boat and when off grid it means not running the generator for 240v and sometimes the slower pace suits me - but I’m also going to buy a new compact electric machine for when I’m in a marina or happy to run the generator because I like 2-4 coffees over a morning/day and the Bellman is too much fluffing about for me at times. The spacer basket isn’t really needed but is a reasonable tamper. Higher pressures work better than the pressures in the manual. It also uses significantly more coffee grinds than an electric machine.

  • @Rowtheboat99
    @Rowtheboat99 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I’d spill coffee grinds all over the van with one of these 😂 or knock the unit over on the hob! I imagine cleaning it is a pain too and another opportunity to get coffee grinds all over the van 😂😂 I’ve just bought an Aeropress and whisk some warm milk up into a froth and then press the coffee into the milk. Does the job for me but I’m not a coffee expert 👍

    Where's the crema? Looks under extracted.

    • @CampervanTime
      @CampervanTime  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good question. It’s because it is extracted at a lower pressure with this machine to get the extraction temperature right. You can get crema if you extract at more like 2 bar, but then the temp is a bit too hot so would need to use quite a light roast to get the best flavour. This coffee I was using in the video was mid roast so i didnt want to over extract.

    Nice option, but I still find my bialetti expresso machine better(for the Cali usage), it's cheaper, smaller, no valves to manipulate, no small water drop, easy to transport when hot(outside), cleans in 2s and the coffee is still much better than the nespresso.
